Madness - I'll Compete. From 1985's Mad Not Mad album. It sounds like the Nutty Boys meet Talking Heads.

Rob, I've just spent a half hour looking for a compilation CD called A Change Is Gonna Come (the Sam Cook song and whole load of other political soul songs). I couldn't find it unfortunately. Never mind, the sentiment is in my heart right now.

Joe, when that came out I was not quite 14. I was not a Motown fan back then. The Supremes were a nearly constant fixture on the radio and I paid no attention to them. But when this song came out I went "whoa!" From the first listen it had such a deep spiritual vibe to it that even a stupid adolescent middle-school kid could get it. She left the group on a very high note.

that's sweet randy. it does have a sort of effortlessly soothing vibe about it. i've got a rather exhaustive (who am i kidding, i love it) supremes anthology that i've been listening to a bit lately. the second side might be a bit long in the tooth, but it's always worth the wait for someday.

Pink - So What. I can't help it, I'm a sucker for a big, anthemic pop chorus. And this Pink is quite the saucy vixen!

Bruce Springsteen - Backstreets (Passaic 1978)
Bruce Springsteen - Prove it all night (Passaic 1978)

Finally found a site where I could download the Passaic Night (also known as Piece de Resistance) concert from the Darkness tour 1978. I once had the vinyl version of this bootleg, the quality is excellent.

I am not a major Springsteen fan apart from Darkness, Born to Run and Nebraska. And this is the best.

John B.,

I was at the Cobo Hall show in Detroit on December 30, 1978. It's the only Bruce show I ever went to, but I did get to see one of his concerts during his best tour. Thanks for the link, it brought back some great memories!!

Michael, thanks for that link. Excellent.

It sent me off on a You Tube hunt for clips from the BBC Scotland 'Transatlantic Sessions', which featured some stunning performances from various British and American folk musicians. Check out John Martyn's contributions, Guy Clark and Nanci Griffiths. Still find that Iris DeMent's voice annoys the hell out of me!
