ROn will be missed for sure. The Stooges should have made it into the Rock 'n Roll HOF years ago. |

Of course, the sad irony is that now they probably will make it into the HOF. |

They are in the final list for this years inductees. Jeff hit the nail on the head with his comment about making it in now that Ron has passed. |

I saw him play with J. Mascis and Mike Watt at SXSW in Austin, TX in March 2001. Here's what I wrote afterwards in The Irish Times. The last time I saw J. Mascis was with Dinosaur Jr 10 years ago in the long gone McGonagles. He looks the exact same now - long, lank hair and baggy t-shirt over an ample gut. The guitars are still turned to 11 too. It's tonight's hottest show due to the whispers about who's playing with him. Mike Watt of Minutemen and Firehose is his bassist as they go through 20 minutes of old Dinosaur and new Mascis material, but then the moment we've all been waiting for happens. Ron Ashton, former guitarist of The Stooges, walks on and plugs in. There are two generations of left-field US rock history on stage together and it's guitarmageddon as they play a set of Stooges songs with Watt on vocals. Awesome. |
