I never thought this would happen. A small, tentative step, but hopefully it'll blossom into something larger. I wonder who will assume the great McGeoch's role. Here's the article, from the Guardian: One of the most important – and underrated – English post-punk bands will reunite for two gigs next year. Magazine, the group led by Buzzcocks co-founder Howard Devoto, will play in London and Manchester on February 13 and 14 respectively. The 2009 gigs will mark Magazine's first public performance since 1980. The group's handful of albums – and particularly their debut single, Shot By Both Sides - were strongly influential, injecting nervous punk rock with stabs of keyboards and arty, political lyrics. Their lasting impact can be heard in everyone from Radiohead to Ministry to Pulp. Although the late John McGeoch will be replaced by an as-yet-undeclared guitarist, Magazine's four other original members – singer Howard Devoto, keyboard player Dave Formula, drummer John Doyle and bassist Barry Adamson - will perform at the concerts. The band is presently soliciting song requests via their MySpace blog. Magazine have not announced plans to record new material but the February concerts will be recorded for possible release, according to an official statement. In 2006, Paul Morley wrote in the Observer that Devoto "... was the man who changed Manchester". When Devoto invited the Sex Pistols to play in the city, it was "before the rest of the country had caught up with the idea that there was any such thing as a Sex Pistol. In the audience for the shows were Mark E Smith, Ian Curtis, Morrissey and Devoto himself". Tickets are available now for the Manchester gig, with London to follow shortly. |

At first glance the thread title had me thinking that some extinct Keanu Reeves fan magazine had resumed publishing once again. |

Jeff, "Whoa!" (spoken with that low-throated inflection only a pure dudeboy can muster) is a line of dialogue that Keanu's voiced in many films - probably fewer films than we jokesters believe, but enough that it's become a longtime gag where he's concerned. |

Ha! I see. I think "whoa" is such a common exclamation in the vocabulary of native (or in my case, practically native) Californians of a certain age, that it's become deeply ingrained in my head. But it's usually uttered in ways that don't necessarily conjure up the wide-eyed/befuddled/surprised/awed delivery of Keanu and the monosyllabic culture of "dudes." In the case of Magazine reuniting (something I never thought would happen), "whoa" just seemed so apt! |

You can find it In a parallel universe teeming with vacant-eyed Keanu Reeves clones, all strapped into Clockwork Orange-style apparatuses, eyes forced open, watching endless loops of live Howard Devoto footage circa 1979, accompanied by sound samples of Devoto singing about what he's going to do to you in the permafrost. |

Jon, cool. I have emailed you. It should be a classic, they actually look really fantastic even though they are a wee bit older now! http://www.myspace.com/magazineofficial Its funny, I think I have sorta met every member of Magazine in a round about way, Devoto high fived me in '88 at a Luxuria gig in Birmingham, Barry Adamson I met at Jazz cafe 2 years ago when I saw him play with my pal Malcolm Ross, Dave Formula, sent me a note on myspace, and I met John McGeogh and John Doyle when I saw the Armoury Show in '85. Never met Martin Jackson. Rob, no where mate, I just think I've posted enough anecdote's on this board to see me into the next 5 years without the need to top up my msgs! Hope everyone is well, I suppose Kev is dipping in now and again too! |
