Wow - she lived a long, grueling, strange life, but somehow it's nice that she got to live into old age.

Did anyone see the film "The Notorious Bettie Page," from a few years back? I thought it was quite well done.

I didn't see it Jeff because I saw review clips of it and the woman they had playing her was a typical far-too-skinny Hollywood actress. It looked like the whole point was lost if she wasn't played by a curvy actress. But if you say it's good I might check it out.

Before I'd ever heard of her or knew what her story was I was familiar with her image through a classic comic book called the Rocketeer, whose female lead was drawn to look exactly like her, in homage. Then I started seeing some of the actual photo shoots, like the bondage series...oh my.

Padraig, when that film came out, I, too, was initially put off by the choice of actress Gretchen Mol because she seemed too skinny and she was naturally blond, for christsakes. But in the film they manage to do a good job of getting her to resemble the real Bettie Page, curves, black hair, and all.

Plus, "The Notorious Bettie Page" wasn't your average Hollywood vehicle, either. It was directed by Mary Harron, responsible for cult film "I Shot Andy Warhol," about Valerie Solanas. Harron really paints an honest and thoughtful portrait of Page's life. It doesn't go out of its way to be controversial or graphic or anything; it just does a good job of telling it like it was. Not a mind-blowing film, but I thought it was quite good.

I remember seeing Bettie every day on my way to work! Honest! I used to get off the train on my way to work every morning in the city centre of Birmingham, 5 mins down the road was Nostalgia comics, and in the window was a carousel, and Bettie's postcards adorned every possible dispenser. It was quite a pleasant experience being presented with Bettie's shapely rear end and provocative poses every morning I can tell ye!
