Guys n gals. I'm all messageboard out. I am taking some time off from posting, time off from subjectivness gone mad (hello Kev!) the alter ego/author's, I'm not suited here any longer. I am pretty tired of listening and watching shit from people who can't even be bothered to post under their own names, I am tired of just, people...people fuck me off, sounds sad but it true, there is no fuc*n respect anymore, anywhere, and I am a man who's glass overfloweth, so don't fuc*n go there. My time away will hopefully give time for post catch up. See y'all around! God bless all of you. Spence x PS See you in Manchester Jon, for the best fuck8n band in the world gig, who am I on about?? Josef K, Orange Juice, Fire Engines? No...Magafuc*inzine!!

Fuck off you big girls blouse :-). Spence, this place 'll die without the likes of you and your revolutionary spirit (see what I did there!) Everybody gets messageboarded out, I post(ed) on a few boards(reggae, celtic, here etc)and after a while it gets less pleasurable, or it stays great depending on your passion for it/how you react to the people posting on it. There were times when I posted here 6, 7, 8 times a day, recently I got disillusioned because I felt I was out of step with everybody (my fault), the dynamics of the board had changed (and why shouldnt it?) and I felt like a man out of time to quote Elvis Costello - the boards primary alter ego-ists favourite artist. We all get pissed off at the smart alecs (well I do anyway), but ultimately they are entitled to their opinion too because otherwise we are living in Nazi Germany. I changed my moniker from Kevin to Skulldisco because I was listening to a lot of music on that label at the time, and also as a reaction to what I perceived to be the blanding out of the music under discussion on the board at the time. I have not changed my stance on the "perceived blandness" - it seemed to me that people were finally posting about their favourite bands after a period of posting about what they thought might be "cool" bands, they had dipped their toes in the water so to speak and realised that nobody was castigating/slagging them so they got braver!!
Honestly, there were times when I thought "he's taking the piss", future posts proved they werent. The more I ramble on here the less gracious I am sounding so I will quit here, except to say that if you make it up to Glasgow on 16 Feb next year for Magafuc*inzine I will meet you there Spence, otherwise take it easy and follow your instincts - ultimately its your shout.
Like I said a few weeks ago I will still look in most days, but probably post only a couple of times a week. However, who knows whats in store, maybe I'll post like a maniac in the months ahead and piss everybody right off. Now that sounds like a plan :-)

To which I can only add that in my opinion people posted about "what they thought might be 'cool' bands" because they honestly love those bands, but then continued by posting about their love of bands considered less cool or "bland" because they honestly love those bands too, and see not the slightest contradiction in loving both. And who are in the company of folks like, oh, Westerberg, Cobain, Forster and McLennan in feeling so.

No probs with that AB, but imo they only posted about the less "cool" bands latterly. Just my perspective on it, I could be wrong

as whitney once uttered to a largely indifferent kevin costner - via song - "don't walk away from me!" spence. most of us are happy enough in our one and only skin. you're our indie guru. i, for one, need you.

right on allen. i see very little posing around these parts, moreso the occasional burst of elitism. the whole notion of cool thing ran it's course for me by the age of about 19. a year out of high school did the job. maybe there's something in my tap water?

Kevin! I had a strong suspicion that was you!

At any rate, IMHO, I've never felt like anyone here discussed certain bands merely to look cool. If anything, what's great about this place is how many "uncool" artists we talk about with a completely straight face. It's kind of refreshing, actually, given how many painfully uncool bands I like (well, they're cool to me, but you know...). Sure, some peoples' tastes might seem bland, but there are enough people here whose tastes parallel my own idiosyncratic preferences that I like to stick around.

Agreed...a place where people, even if they might be more hesitant at first due to cruddy experiences on other chatboards here feel free to be completely themselves? Sounds pretty revolutionary...

I came home from work to find this.

Spence, take a vacation, ok. But you can't actually leave this board. You have obligations. Responsibilities, Dad!

I think you already know that your posts have long been my favorites. At least I hope you do.

The common vein amongst all of us is we like or love the Go Betweens. After that, it's all up in the air. My Hollies shelf space is probably about equal to my Fall shelf space, which means a hell of a lot for both of them. And I could write a tediously long post as to why this is. As I see it the odd bits of uncool pop just go into the mix along with the more outre elements. As Allen points out Robert and Grant had their favorites who were decidedly uncool, in my book anyway. The Go Betweens are a mongrel band, so it makes sense that we are a mongrel crowd.

I must plead guilty to elitism, Hollies and Lulu notwithstanding. But I probably won't be reforming that behavior.

Yeah, Magazine . . . ! I still remember getting really mad at some faceless Rolling Stone critic dismissing them as a low budget Roxy Music. The funny thing is they really ARE a mixture of punk and prog rock. Yesterday my iPod threw up a Magazine number I'd totally forgotten about because I think I only had it on vinyl as a single b-side: "The Book." Before looking at the iPod, I'd have sworn it was one of David Nichols' narratives with the Cannanes. I wish I could see the reunited band, even without McGeogh.

Not only do I not give a rat's arse whether a band I listen to is "cool", I swear that half the time I don't even understand what makes one band cool and another one naff. I'm truly puzzled by this.

For instance, why is Crowded House so reviled, when the GoBees, who plow some pretty similar turf, are the bee's knees?

At the end of the day, if it speaks to you, if it touches your heart, makes you feel, "that singer knows exactly how I feel", or moves in you in some way, that's what makes it cool to me.

elitism's fine randy. if subjectivity has one guaranteed place, it's one's thoughts and feelings on their favourites. as long as no one's being put down for it, which you obviously don't do. you're lovely like that.

nicely put ewan. the crowdies discussion is a whole other matter. which we've no doubt fleshed out before. and i'm only too happy to launch into again.....

And to take it just a little further ETM, in a world where people's lives are so altered or even ended due to nationalism, theism, racism, homophobia, sexism, etc. ad nauseum, to think that emulating that kind of thinking and coming to verbal blows over someone else's choice of what music they love...are you kidding me? Really, are you kidding me?

Hey Spence, don't stay away too long. I second everything Randy has said (with the exception of the amount of space The Hollies and The Fall take up on my shelves. Far less inches, due to lack of funds, more than anything!)

Hope you get what you need from the board break, and come back soon.

I don't care what other people like really, on reflection of music from that era the GBs are one of the few that have stood the test of time,it could have been written now or in the 60's.
I have to say When Hall'n'Oats and Fleetwood Mac are mentioned I had to check my browser.

No, it was an Asian comedy programme in the UK and it was about some asian people going for an English ( instead of me going for an Indian) meal

Hi Spence,

being off the board for a couple of days and found you writing a lot of new threads and answers. But when I read this (your) thread I really became sad.
This morning you posted that spice is back!

Hope you're feeling better now. And from all the answers you could see how many miss(ed) you!

Looking forward to seeing you in Manchester for the fucking magazine......
Take care,
Andreas.

Great to have you back, Spence! Sadly I didn't notice you'd gone (but that's only because I've been scarce here myself as I've just got a new job). But you really are needed here - you're one of only two or three I can put a face to (hello, Catherine!) and without the likes of you, Jeff, Randy, Padraig and a few others it wouldn't exist. (No Hollies on my shelf, but it does feature The seriously uncool Thompson Twins - "Love on Your Side" is a great song – and The Mighty Lemon Drops among others, and far too much Jefferson Airplane. Probably not cool, but who knows!?).
