New year, time for a new list.

The Mission - Gods Own Medicine. There's always been a goth element to my listening...

Highlight so far is Garden Of Delight (Hereafter) which I don't think I greatly cared for when this first came out 23 years ago. I still have the vinyl too.

More beautiful than yesterday's result Kevin!

Listening to Joy Division's Still right now. Bought it ages ago but this is the first time I've played it. I'm sure I heard it in the 80s a few times though. The sound isn't quite as bad as I'd heard it was, but not great either.

Michael, surely with your surname you should be listening to...

Nevermind, that's a really poor gag. I tend to listen to classical music (Bach played by Glenn Gould; guitar music played by Narcisso Yepes) when I go to bed, along with some jazz - Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker - and Nick Drake. These are my regular go-to-sleep soundtracks, all played pretty quietly as I drift into dreamland.

Randy, the sound, eh? Saw them live at university in 81 or 82, when they were promoting From the Lion's Mouth. I remember being impressed. A shame that Adrian Borland suffered such emotional issues and eventually took his own life.

Simon, I never even heard of the Sound until Jeff turned me onto them maybe a couple years ago at the longest.

"Propaganda" is their early 4 track demo recorded at home in 1979. It's actually quite good-sounding because it was done on reel-to-reel rather than cassette. Stylistically it's an amusing surprise: a huge homage to the Stooges and MC5 which Borland readily acknowledges in his notes. I love the Stooges but have never understood what the fuss over MC5 was about. Anyway this collection is great in a trash-rock kind of way but when they bring in the occasional drunken groovy Lori Logic-type saxophone and Borland starts sounding like a cross between Iggy Pop and Lawrence (Felt) minor classics pop out of the speakers.

A couple songs were done again for "Jeopardy" which I haven't got (and now the Renascent reissue is going for over $100 US on the secondhand market!) and judging from "Night vs Day" I really want that album. Oh well, eventually I'll find one for a realistic price. When I checked the US Amazon Marketplace the other night somebody was trying to sell "Lion's Mouth" for $200! Fortunately I have that one.

"Folk Roots, New Routes" by Shirley Collins and Davy Graham, who sadly died a few weeks ago. A true maverick, who was an enormous influence on many guitarists. This record in particular pre-dates the great English folk-rock scene by about 5 years.

I have it on vinyl and it sounds a little distorted. However a 5 year old child (who had never seen a turntable in his life, if that is any kind of excuse) recently grabbed the arm of my turntable and did some impromptu 'scratching' with a John Fahey LP. Result = ruined copy of John Fahey and a forthcoming search for a new stylus. And one small child reduced to tears when I shouted at him, as it was obvious that for his parents it was no big deal.

And also http://www.myspace.com/aufgeladenundbere it for a listen to Davy Henderson's new outfit 'The Sexual Objects' (dreadful name!). From the ex-Fire Engines/Win/Nectarine No.9 frontman the usual mixture of T-Rex/Velvets/cryptic lyrics and none the worse for all that.

Nectarine No.9 were sadly underrated and live could be simply stunning. One show from the old Cas Rock in Edinburgh sticks out in particular. Or pretty crap depending on the intake of substances and liquids.

The holidays finally gave me time to catch up a bit...Fleet Foxes was certainly a highlight. On first listen I was so overwhelmed after the first few tracks I had to switch it off and relax for half an hour - breathtaking in the literal sense. Ryan Adam's Cardinalogy is another beautiful listen, despite some lazy lyrics. Jenny Lewis's second solo album is rockier and gutsier than the first and highlights her superb voice. The Accidental have some nice low-key tunes and harmonies on their last, whose title escapes me. CD86 whacked me back into the past faster than you could say Life on Mars...ah, those lost glorious days of dole queues and whiny boy voices and mad guitars. And lots of Mahler, soundtracking the first enormous volume of his biography, a demonic whirlwind of energy cutting through his often outraged & anti-Semitic critics as they howled at what they saw as his cacaphonic soiling of Germanic musical purity. The future will understand me, snapped Gustav, settling down to compose another mammoth symphony. And of course it did, rapturously.

Where did you get the Felt sessions from Spence? They were so great and I have had to pacify myself with the occasional Tyde album in lieu of any new material being made available. There are some b-sides which they could/should have put on the reissues if Lawrence hadnt been such a miserable bastard. They even took a song off The Strange Idols Pattern

Spence - I'd love to hear those Felt BBC sessions!!!

Cosmo - yeah, but the song they took off of Strange Idols was the one stinker of the bunch, imho - a pastichey spanish guitar instrumental that didn't fit with anything else and only disrupted the flow of what is an otherwise amazing and consistent album. I remember thinking it was a wise move to remove that track.

Cosmo, send me your email and I'll get them to you. Do you have Bubblegum Perfume?

Yeah Lawrence, what a waste eh!?

I was with a friend Nigel on Saturday whom I was once in a group with called Western. It featured Gary from Felt on drums and the name was conceived by Lawrence. Before I'd joined, Gary invited Marice D to play guitar for them, but when Nigel et him to discuss Nigel got put off, by the mullet hair, stonewash clad uncool jeans and jean jacket not to mention the Reebok trainers!! He never joined!

I like The Sexual Objects track Andrew, thanks for mentioning it here. It reminds me of one of the songs from the Postcard mk11 era Nectarine around '92/'93. Win live were astonishing, they shouda been number 1 all around the world. Super Popoid Groove was the one for me, they never quite captured its T'Rex intensity on record though.

I also like Wake the President from that same myspace, I rate em. Yes we've heard it all before, but its harmless.

Yes I have Bubblegum Perfume, what about Tuesday's Secret? or My Face is on Fire? they would have been great as extra tracks.
Jeff-You are right that Crucifix Heaven wasnt much cop but it's on the album and I dont approve of the revisionist approach. Most of the albums I like could lose a track or two but wouldnt want to see reissues of gradually diminishing track totals. The reason alot of us buy the same stuff over and over again is to get more not less in the way of music.

Kinks - Picture Book - a top heavy set of classics from Ray & co.

Cat Power - Dark End Of The Street E.P.

Marianne Faithful - Easy Come Easy Go - a slightly overlong CD with the usual suspects helping out, Nick Cave, Jarvis, Morrissey etc. A bit Jazz-lite at times.

Cosmo - I agree that usually the revisionist approach to reissues is frustrating, especially when it seriously alters an album in a detrimental way. For example, I really dislike how Lawrence completely changed the cover art for some of the reissues. Strange Idols Pattern just isn't right without all those weird, dark, primitive historical images adorning its cover. I can see how an exact replica would be too small to translate well on a CD cover, but still, at least find some way to maintain the theme! Ditto replacing the wonderfully gaudy photos on Goldmine Trash with a simple illustration of a column. However, omitting Crucifix Heaven was a rare instance of a totally welcome revision, since it's the one song I always skip anyhow!

Adding some bonus tracks might've been nice, though, like the inferior but still interesting single-only version of Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow that features a string quartet and female backing vocals.

Jon,
I got a copy of Talk Talk Live at Montreaux '86 , which was released on DVD earlier in the year, really good stuff, the earlier material comes across much better live, some great musicians with them in full mullet glory! And they were still to record their best material, don't know if they ever played their last two albums in a live setting? That song "John Cope" off The Collection is one of my favourite Talk Talk recordings, think it was a B-side originally.

Padraig - I quite like Au Revoir Simone, its hardly life changing, but 80s synths a fine by me.

The new Animal Collective album (Merriweather Post Pavilion) arrived today (thanks postie). 1st listen and its very decent indeed, don't want to put pressure on until its had a few more listens, it got a great Sunday Times review this weekend.

Awaiting a bucketload of stuff which should arrive this week...

Padraig,
Even better than Chaos and Creation in the Backyard? That only came out a couple of years ago but it ranks with me as one of his best - up there even with RAM. The single that they were playing on 702 sounded a bit like Cher so I have been very cautious! I've been suckered in too many times with rave reviews about late period McCartney albums only to find they are shit. e.g. Run Devil Run
If it is as good as you say, he certainly is going through a good patch again then.

Geoff, I genuinely think it's quite brilliant. There are some electronic elements which would no doubt put a lot of people off, but I think it's in keeping with some of the more experimental Beatles stuff. There is even some backwards masking on the hidden track at the end!

As much as its handy to buy from Amazon et al, I get absolutely fu*k all pleasure out of it. Buying music product is over, and its a a shame, it was bad enough when vinyl went but now this. Its like 28 Days later out there.

Geoff, I did manage to get Felt albums from Amazon pretty cheap to be honest and from some of the ebay stores, dirt cheap infact.

The Ruts - The Crack (one of the most overlooked albums ever in my opinion)
Babylon's burning, Dope for guns, S.U.S., ... and then
"It was cold in the night..." deeper is not possible...
and the classic "Jah war" of cause...

to kevin: the magazine concert on the 16th?
I am quite sure that I have a ticket for saturday, 14th.
Did they extend ?

All the best, cu Andreas.

Kev, great mate. Yeah, I am seeing Jon for the Manchester Magazine gig. I am looking forward to it. I will miss McGeogh, however, Noko is a great guitarist, so the really the whole occasion will blow me away and I won't worry about the missing piece too much.
Animal Collective are good, but they are just another pop band as far as I am concerned, all clever n that, I find it hard to get excited, I really do. Its a bit Beck, its a bit Flaming Lips (if I hear ine more freakin theremin!, Freur, Hit Chip, its a bit Warp record label, its a little bit ugh!!!!! I heard it all before mate, Cornelius about 10 years ago!! ;)

I always feel a bit hesitant about reformations, but this just feels right, same as Pale Fountains felt right, I could kick myself for not going, but the youtube's proved they were unmissable, I think the same can apply to Magazine.

See you there Andreas!

Shit. I'm going to regret not somehow lining up the planets to go there, freezing in the English winter or not.

No, Kevin, Magazine are a bit Genesis and Emerson, Lake & Palmer!

Among so many things I love about Magazine is the fact that Devoto's lyrics were actually very good. He was my exception that otherwise proved the rule that you didn't want to pay attention to the lyrics in pop music.

Felt - Splendour of Fear and Goldmine Trash

The World is as Soft as Lace has to be one of the most beautiful songs in existence.

Having a Felt binge this week. Winter always seems to be a good time for that (even though we're in the midst of global warming-induced summer weather here in SF this week. It was 80 degrees yesterday afternoon for christ's sake! [I believe that's 26 degrees celsius for the rest of the world]. That is just unheard of in January! What the hell happened to winter?).

Funny that Jeff, I was just thinking how Felt brighten my working day up too, its definitely indusive to helping you through the gloomy days of winter, that's for sure.

Re what's happened to Winter, unfortunately its the same over here. When I was a kid, we used to play about in 2 or 3 foot of snow, even deeper and more awesome when I was in Scotland, (we were once blocked in by snow for a week solid at my grandparents farm at the foot of the Pentland Hills!) and my kids won't see that kinda snow now, unless we take them to the Swiss Alps.

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Wave & Stone Flower

Spence, that's quite a dramatic shift! And cause for concern, too. That's crazy that you used to get so much snow and a bit scary that you don't anymore. What's happened here is surreal. Usually (even last year) January is our coldest month. I know this is SF where we don't have "real" seasons, but it still usually gets down just below freezing, with lots of nasty, cold, stormy rain. This year, it's like summer. I'm about to go out right now for my lunch break in a t-shirt!

On the turntable at the moment (though not on random for once) -
Augie March - Sunset Studies: improves with every listen - Randy, you were right!
Felt - Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty + The Splendour of Fear: Mexican Bandits must have inspired Ups and Downs
The Best of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: where does the pretense end and the wink of an eye begin?
Steve Kilbey - Painkiller: Not as good as he thinks it is! No KILLER songs yet.
Coldplay - Viva La Vida: STILL trying to get into this. Who's been listening to Sigur Ros then?

@Geoff,
on new years eve I watched the first dvd of the heima-2dvd, free concerts in iceland overlapped with interview snipplets and wonderful little films of iceland. It is just magic! Even my cousins and my friends loved it tho they have never seen or heared of sigur ros before!

@spence and jeff:
yeah it is unbelievable having 26 celsius in frisco january - but tho the global warming we had the winter here in germany with minimum 20 cm of snow all over the country for more than a week and we haven't had that for years.
when you were blocked in snow, spence was it the winter of 78/79? this was a winter in which cars and trains stood still and many many houses could not be reached anymore!

Nice weekend to all of you!
Just hearing the sisters - floodland...

Near enough Andreas, it was winter '76/'77, though from this period onwards I can remember same amount of snow right up to '93. From '93 onwards, there's been nothing like we used to have. Obviously, this is not strictly true for all parts of the UK, esp Scotland.

Don't know what the rest of the day will bring, but its better than work!

Geoff,

Is Strange Bird as good as the last two AM albums?

I have all the Byrd albums from Mr Tamborine Man to Farther Along. One of my favorite Byrds songs that is not well know at all is "Bugler" from Farther Along. It contains a great vocal performace from Clarence White and touching lyrics about a boy and his bluetick hound.

Michael,
I feel the last 2 Augie March are more "immediate" and more commercial. The first 2 are more alternative. I'd imagine that this will mean that you will like them, but just don't expect to be hit over the head/bowled over by the first 2 as Moo did for me. As Randy suggested, the first 2 are more subtle.

Talking Byrds, I think the last Augie March gets a bit Byrdsian at times - the guitars anyway! Now I'M sounding like a Teenage Fanclub fan!

Padraig, so far I'm liking "Guilty Office" a fair bit. Did you ever get Robert Scott's "Songs of Otago's Past?" I don't expect him to ever do a bona-fide pop record again.

I've never heard TLC or OF him/her/them/it.

I'm chuffed that Geoff is sticking with the first two Augie March albums. It's true they are less immediate, less commercial. Personally I usually expect the less immediate things to last longer. For example, I just came back from one of my periodic trips up the state to see my mom. The rental cars finally have inputs for an iPod so I had access to a LOT of music. At some point "On My Block" came on. I used to not get that song at all and I was just loving everything about it. I'd put a lot of Robert's music in that "less immediate and more durable" classification.

The first song on "Strange Bird" that bowled me over was "The Night is a Blackbird." It still bowls me over.

I came home to find my copy of Pigram Brothers' "Jiir" in my doorway. It's fairly conservative Australian country music but it doesn't sound American and therefore rates much better with me than the Sarah Storer record I tried a couple months ago. I'll probably be picking up a Holly Throsby record soon since two people I trust are liking her so much.

Spence, that Five or Six song from Pillows and Prayers is awesome, but I've learned it's not at all representative of what they sound like. They were actually very experimental: quite droney, loads of atmosphere, sometimes tranquil and other times loud and discordant, sometimes lush and pretty and other times totally angular, and downright bizarre. But generally pretty UNpop. Very strange group. I almost wonder if they deliberately wrote that little guitar-pop ditty for Pillows and Prayers so they would have something that actually fits stylistically with the rest of artists on that record.

I kinda lost touch/faith after 'Darkness on the edge of town", but I like this. With some very 1960s sounding jangly and backwards guitars.

The other evening I was disussing busking with my son and we ended up watching the clip of Springsteen (from 1988) in Copenhagen busking 3 songs. Whatever you think of his music, his heart is in the right place and he has a real fan's enthusiasm for music.

I was in the pub once in Edinburgh when in came the (latterday) Clash, fresh from busking on Princes Street and proceeded to count their ill-gotten gains at the table next to us. God, Paul Simonon looked so cool...

Ah, the Meat Puppets. To be honest, I was never much of a fan, but a close friend of mine has always been fanatical about them, particularly their earlier albums. Some trippy stuff! Like psychedelic cow-punk, at times.

I have no problem with sampling and talent borrows, genius steals as they say but I remember when Dirge came out being a bit surprised that the 'steal' was not acknowledged as either a songwriting credit or sample. The song featured prominently on television in a jeans advert and although I have no idea what the Five or Six members were up to at the time I am sure they would have appreciated the royalties and recognition. 'It's not the principle It's the money' as Tommy Cooper once said

The Attack -- About Time

I ordered this the same time I ordered the Chords' antho but it took much longer to arrive. The Chords are ersatz mod and (IMHO) total crap. The Attack are from the original mod era and, five songs into this comp, they sound pretty decent.

"Daddy's Highway" by the Bats, which I found for a mere $14 during a pilgrimage to Amoeba Records in San Francisco recently. It's terrific. I'm surprised how many songs are on it, though.

Before CDs were widely available, the Bats were already experimenting with CD bloat. That's progressive.

Rob, the original album only had twelve tracks ( ending with Daddy's Highway. ) The additional songs ( Calm Before The Storm; Candidate; Made On You; Trouble In This Town; Made Up In Blue ) were added when it was re-issued. They first appeared on the three EPs the band released prior to Daddy's Highway. The three EPs ( minus one or two tracks the band were not happy with ) were subsequently released as 'Compiletely' which has been OOP for some considerable time. Daddy's Highway and Compiletely are my favourite albums by the band.

Currently listening to Dear Hamlyn by Luluc. This young lady, who hails from Melbourne, may appeal to you Padraig.

Still more cassettes:

The Best of the Mamas & the Papas
Wondrous music that I never tire of.

Sliver - soundtrack
The movie was and is a real p.o.s., but I remember liking this comp at the time. I now think my attraction must've been completely due to the three excellent songs by Massive Attack, Heaven 17 and Neneh Cherry (all thankfully available on their own albums), because beyond the OK UB40 Elvis cover the rest is dishwater dull and/or hilariously bad examples of a techno moment whose time has thankfully passed.

The KLF - The White Room
Sounds a little dated, but still good fun. Wish it had the Tammy Wynette version on it, though.

Padraig, I reside in Prestwick on the West Coast of Scotland ( about 30 miles south of Glasgow.) 'Compiletely' is a gorgeous album which contains some of my favourite songs by the band ( Made Up In Blue; Neighbours; Chicken Bird Run; Jeweller's Heart; Claudine; Joe's Again.) I have the original ep's ( vinyl ) and was delighted when they collected all the tracks together and released them on cd.

Geoff, my interest in Australian/New Zealand music started in the late 1970's/early 1980's. I had no interest in a lot of what was being released in the U.K./U.S.A. at the time and went looking for something more to my taste. I checked out the music scene in Australia/New Zealand, discovered The Church, The Go-Betweens, The Triffids, The Chills; The Bats; The Verlaines and never looked back. I do not stream from or listen to the radio. I do keep an eye on the Playlists of Incoming on Triple RRR ( Melbourne ) which is hosted by Richard Moffat. The shows broadcasts every Wednesday between 1600 and 1900 hours. Richard Moffat was a member of Disaster Plan who are one of my favourite Australian bands. I also get recommendations from Scott Thurling from time to time. He runs ( owns? ) PopBoomerang ( home of the wonderful Aerial Maps.) My main resource, however, is the internet. I simply love searching for new music and check out artists and bands all the time. For example. Scott told me a couple of months ago that PopBoomerang will be releasing the new album by The Beautiful Few in March, 2009 ( I like the band and have all the albums they have released to date.) I headed on over to MySpace where I listened to some tracks. Each of the songs on the new album will have a guest vocalist and the two on MySpace feature Oliver Mann and Gregor Day. Mann's voice made a big impression on me and I checked out his MySpace page. Liked what I heard and purchased his two albums. Listed among his friends were Grand Salvo ( Paddy Mann who is his brother ) and Luluc. Checked out their MySpace pages and bought their albums. That is how it works for me most of the time.

In addition to Australian/New Zealand music, I also purchase a lot of stuff by Swedish/Scandanavian artists/bands.

Currently listening to 'Atlantic Edge' and 'Atlas From Home' by The Beautiful Few on MySpace.

Thanks for the info on "Daddy's Highway," Hugh. I thought the record seemed a little long, especially since everything else I have by the band is short. It all works together nicely, though - if hadn't told me, I'd never have guessed the album wasn't all of a piece.

And yeah, Randy, I felt pretty lucky to come across it so cheap. And Amoeba knew what they had - it was in a "staff picks" section of the store and was covered in stickers saying "out of print" and "classic." I guess they figured they'd be hard-pressed to find someone willing to pay $50 for a copy.

Skulldisco, I suspect I am a bit older than you and the late 70's/early 80's were certainly not a boomtime for me as far as UK/USA music was concerned. I am sure there were a lot of good artists/bands around at the time, it is just that most of them did not appeal to me hence why I went looking elsewhere. Even today, I still buy very little music ( other than folk influenced/related stuff ) by UK artists/bands. The same is true of music by USA artists/bands although probably to a lesser extent. To each their own as you say. What works for one person does not necessarily work for another.

Rob, my pleasure. I think the album does still work with the extra tracks although, in my opinion, 'Mad On You' and 'Trouble In This Town' are weaker songs than the other three. That said, I am sure there are people who feel differently.

Currently listening to LP by Holy Fcuk ( swear filter.) A purely instrumental ( electronica ) outfit who hail from Toronto, Canada. Heard of them Skulldisco?

Kev, no intent to overhype. I like the Bats well enough, and had heard some people here say they liked "Daddy's Highway," so I snapped it up when I saw it staring up at me in the Amoeba racks. And it's good, although I agree the Bats are, as you say, samey. It's not a life-changer, but I'm glad to own it. I'm a sucker for that 80s NZ sound.

Right now, I'm diggin' on the latest Old 97s, thank you very much Mr. Belz.

Rob, US$50.00 would have been a snip for Daddy's Highway. There are two used copies up for sale on AmazonCom for US$83.91 and US$128.91 respectively and one copy for sale on Gemm for US$79.60. I am sure Randy will take it off your hands for US$14.00 if you decide you don't like it. :-)
Like you, I love the sound of a lot of the N.Z. ( Flying Nun ) releases from the 80s ( The Able Tasmans; The Chills; Tall Dwarfs; The Verlaines.)

Rob, I really don't know if people actually pay those prices but, where rare and hard to find titles are concerned, you quite often see sellers asking for silly money on Amazon and Gemm. There is now one on offer at AmazonCom for US$148.99.

Skulldisco, persevere and you may grow to love it. If not, you can always sell it to Randy now that Rob has decided to keep his copy. :-) Where did you find it by the way?

Rob - people do pay those prices. Sometimes. For CDs that were only issued once and are long out of print (and for which there is demand) it's not uncommon to see them fetch some pretty crazy prices. In many cases the CDs are much more sought after than than the LPs because fewer people listen to LPs anymore. Thing is, I know that if I preserver, I can usually find what I'm looking for for far less in a local record shop.

As for Daddy's Highway, I think it's the Bats' best album, although it doesn't blow me away, say, the way the Go-Betweens do.

I actually saw the Bats many years ago, I think they were supporting the Church at Selinas at Coogee. A mate of mine was really into them (we're talking 1990(?))but I agree with Scully that they were/are VERY samey.
Talking about outrageous prices, I saw the Fireman's "Rushes" on Amazon for several hundred pounds the other day! The same thing used to happen to NDW cds - the second hand shops would sell CDs by them for over a hundred bucks. Then the band decided to re-release them and you could pick them up for less then $20. You'd think Macca would have the power to get a rerelease of his stuff! Or maybe he likes it - stokes his ego that one of his cds is "collectable".

Geoff, they certainly have their own sound and I can understand the 'samey' references but I have always felt that, in the early days at least, the songs were quite different and that the 'sameyness' was more to do with the arrangements and Robert's voice/delivery. I don't think they had a Producer in the early days. I saw them perform live at The Halt Bar in Glasgow around 1986 and they put on a great show. The Bats supporting The Church!!! I would have loved that show.

Ok, I seem to have a computer now. What's all this about everybody except for me finding cheap copies of "Daddy's Highway?"

I've paid some silly prices for a few things. I shelled about about $50 for Microdisney's "Clock Comes Down the Stairs" and that was the cheapest I'd seen it (on CD). It's clearly worth it, as far as I'm concerned and I'm still hoping to locate a copy of "Everybody's Fantastic" for that sort of money (or less would be nice). On the other hand, I'll probably only pay about $30 for "Crooked Mile." I've paid $30 for a number of things. I think I went crazy and paid $70 for something but right now I can't remember what. My favorite is the Tallulah Gosh antho which I paid $45 for and the seller nicely sent it to me with the Amoeba $2.99 sticker attached to it! I've left it in place of course. Too bad Tallulah Gosh aren't nearly as good as their namesake song . . . .

I've held out on "Daddy's Highway" but like the Verlaines' "Juvenilia" it's not been showing up for a reasonable price when I've taken the trouble to look. "Juvenilia" seems never to pop up at all. I want them both. I'd pay pretty big smackers for an official copy of the Chills' "Secret Box," all thanks forever to Andrew Kerr for sending me an unofficial copy.

Hugh, your advice about Holly Throsby is noted.

The Smiths - The Complete Peel Sessions. Just found it on the computer, forgot I had it.

Some nice renditions in this, especially Half A Person, London and Nowhere Fast (different to the Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me b-side I think).

Spence - I love early, pre-arena-scaled Simple Minds. Empires and Dance is such a good album. I like Sons and Fasciation/Sister Feelings Call quite a lot, too. They were such an intensely creative and artsy band then.

XY765 - I believe that Peel Session of Nowhere Fast which was included as a b-side to Last Night I Dreamt.. is the only Peel Session of that song. It's a great version, though. I love the Peel version of This Charming Man - I prefer it to the studio version. And This Night Has Opened My Eyes is one of my all time favorite Smiths tunes ever, and I love the stripped back sound of it. I wish all of the Peel Sessions could see an official release.

And me Jeff. Ditto Sisters and Cacophony too. I must admit to liking New Gold Dream and Sparkle in the rain. I am fully aware that Mr Kerr and associates drew their pomposity pistols on their audiences during the transition between NGD and SITR, but there you go.

I agree, Peel sessions and all the albums in one big box set or/and indivdual releases.

Spence, I like New Gold Dream quite a bit, and Sparkle in the Rain is admittedly a guilty pleasure. But I draw the line there!

Oh, and did you hear that the Smiths have finally remastered their 4 albums for re-release this year? I read on Stephen Street's blog that they remastered them back in November or so. I'm curious to hear how they turn out. I've heard from various sources that the recent Sound of the Smiths comp was a little too hot, compressed, and modern, so I'm a bit leery. I've also heard that the snazzy 7" singles box set they released sounds and looks beautiful.

Yeah that 7" box set looks nice Jeff but I have practically all the Smith's singles on 12" so no need.

Must play the Last Night I Dreamt 12" again as well to see about Nowhere Fast, it sounds so good.

And I also agree about This Night Has Opened my Eyes, for some reason it always really grabs and engages me, I never tire of it.

Have you ever seen A Taste Of Honey? That film always reminds me of This Night Has Opened My Eyes..Sheelagh Delaney (Louder Than Bombs and Girlfriend In A Coma 12" cover star) is in it, is she the only cover star to appear twice on Smiths records?

Speakin of Smiths cover stars, the still of Avril Angers for I Started Something 12" is from another very good film, The Family Way. The soundtrack was by Macca, one of his first I think....

I have the majority of the Smiths 12"s, and those sound positively beautiful, hence my own reason for not splurging on the 7" box set. It does look like a cool little package, though.

No, I've never seen A Taste of Honey, but I've always wanted to ever since reading about it (and its apparently huge influence on Morrissey) in the two Smiths biographies. I believe Delaney might be the only person to appear more than once on a Smiths cover. She's on Louder Than Bombs and Girlfriend in a Coma, iirc.

Actually, wait, no!!! The woman on the cover of Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now - Viv Nicholson - was also on the cover for Barbarism Begins at Home. She apparently won a lottery in the 60s and received heaps of money, then blew it all in a frenzy and turned into a Jehova's Witness or something.

The cover for I Started Something always cracks me up - Avril Angers' hat is outrageous.

Jeff, that's great news re Smiths remastering, can't wait!

Talking about covers, I was once proclaimed as being the spitting image of the rocker / biker boy on the front cover of The world won't listen. I must admit the resembalnce at that time was quite uncanny. One Saturday morning I was doing a record fair, and one guy on a stall had a massive WWL poster on sale, my mate Baz bought it me and rolled it out next to me on the stall and was pointing at the poster and then at me and back agaon, continually, without saying too much and people were passing by wondering what the heck was going on!

I played the Peel version of William last night, a much better version than the single release.

Yeah there was a documentary years ago Jeff with footage of Morrissey and Viv Nicholson driving around Manchester in a convertible, very funny.

I think my favourite Smiths 12" is the Sandie Shaw & The Smiths 'Hand In Glove'. Really rocking version of that one, wish there was a version with Morrissey singing it with that version. Shaw also sings I Don't Owe You Anything & Jeane, think it was on a French label. I should really convert that to MP3.

I also have the New York 12" version of This Charming Man which is practically unlistenable, nice to have for the cover art though.

Must listen to the whole Peel session Spence, just flicked through a few songs.

Will the live album "Rank" be remastered as well?
I'll pick up the 4 remastered studio albums for sure and hold off on the Best Of comp.

Good question Michael. A guy I know, Lee who has a studio was once working at the BBC as an assistant engineer, and he actually found himself in a master mixing room with access to the master tapes for RANK. he was there for an afternoon and walked away with a slightly tweaked version all for himself.

Jeff, I can vouch for "A Taste of Honey" as well. But I have a weakness for the early 60s B&W kitchen sink film school. They're kind of like monophonic recordings--mysterious and evocative.

Michael - not sure about "Rank" as Stephen Street didn't mention any of the albums they were remastering by title, just that they were remastering all of them. Honestly I'm assuming it'll be just the 4 studio albums, but who knows? If there's enough money coming in from those, they might find it worthwhile to do "Rank," too.

Hey Spence re: The Minds

Is "to draw one's pomposity pistols" a copyrighted phrase or available for general use ? Made me laugh...

I saw the former Self-Abusers several times live in Glasgow before 'New Gold Dream' and they were amazing at that time. Shame (like U2) they then looked to the other side of the Atlantic and adopted those 'rockist' attitudes; interesting to wonder where they might have gone if they had remained true to their European post-punk influences ?

Andrew, ye can use it, royalty free, seeing as i know ye! ;)

Andrew, I would've loved to have seen Self-Abusers. Su, a friend of mine saw them a lot too. As you say, if only they'd have stuck to a siliar path as their early records, you know, like Wire did I guess. Mind you, Jim has his pension now, and Colin Newman will probably be working til he's 75. I could be wrong...

Oh, Van Dyke pars - Discover America. I only just discovered it, its amazing. I love it. Anyone else know it?

I always loved Surfs Up and Sunflower by The Beach Boys, surfs Up had van Dyke working with them on certain songs. This is the reason I got Discover America. I still think Sunflower, or Surfs Up are the best beach Boys albums, much better than Pet Sounds.

Those ARE great albums, Spence, although I'm also a "Pet Sounds" fan. I still think, though, my favorite Beach Boys album is "Wild Honey." It's just such a weird, wild record. I also like "Today," which is kind of a warm up for "Pet Sounds." Oh, and "Love You," containing shout-outs to both Johnny Carson and the Solar System itself.

@The Simple Minds:

I love their albums Reel To Real Cacophany and Empires And Dance but I never liked Sisters and Sons And Fascination.
For me their rock attitude began with these albums...
and Andrew - I also would like to know how they sounded today without the 'rockist attitude' as you call it!

Two totally different albums at the moment:

The latest Sigur Ros which I really like and Drop Out With The Barracudas with one of the 7"-es I always loved the most: Summer Fun

I just say ba-ba-ra-ra-cu-cu-da-da
...now put it all together :-)
