Just heard the I'm Your Fan compilation from back in '91 -- I'm fond of Leonard Cohen, but his performances don't always draw me in like I wish they would, and I feel as if a lot of these renditions are stylistic improvements. RF's snazzy strut through "Tower of Song" is a highlight, an artist at the peak of his powers, halfway between the eras of flamboyant eccentricity and erudite understatement. Anybody have any particular thoughts about this recording? |

Yes, I like it too. I think that it is the only recording with Baby You Know as backing band, released under Robert's name. Maybe there are some outtakes or demos somewhere? (Robert played on their record(s) too, and toured with the same band these years.) |

For me one of the highlights is Robert Quine's guitar on Lloyd Cole's 'Chelsea Hotel'; simply exquisite. I like Robert's 'Tower of Song' a lot. Think that there is a demo of 'Falling Star' with Baby You Know and a demo version of '121' too ? |

I love RF's TOS too, he handles it superbly, mind you I think he handles most cover versions with grace and care, he makes other people's songs his own if you get my drift, I adore New York Girlfriend to pieces. I'm your fan, as a compilation was excellent, it worked well as an introducer to LC's work, y' know if people had heard of him but never heard him. The album, a double used to fly outta friend of mine's record shop back in the day, we'd always have it playin, or at least once or twice a week. Particular faves I also warmed to: I also liked Bill pritchard's sleazy parisian style I'm your man, shame he was such a piss head he never made much of an impact later on. Fatima Mansions A singer must die, sort of pre emptied Cathal's future solo direction, Peter Astor, David Mccomb's contribution sounded like a less camp Momus take on an LC song, all in all one of the better tribute albums. |

Some of the more, err, geeky Go-Betweens fans hold bananas when meeting fellow fans for the first time. This is as a tribute to the fact that all the artists in the sleevenotes to I'm Your Fan are holding bananas. Just for the record, when meeting Go-Betweens fans I've not previously met I just describe myself (modestly) in advance. |

You know, Padraig, those bananas came in mighty handy as post-meet up snacks! |

Years ago, I used to record at this dump called the reptile house in lichfield, run by two extremely nice fellows, who were in his band. bill kept turning up well piss*d, apparently loads o chinese whispers re massive alcohol consumption being the ruin of everything... |

I was wondering if you would see my comment Austin! Bananas are good to soak up some of the alcohol too (maybe). |
