He was an innoffensive old stick with Northern grit and charm, i liked him, a true original gentleman in the world of football, that is, like most things in football, sadly lacking today, way back when football was a matter of life and death in society!, its sounds like a joke but t'was true, now its about how many f*cking Ferrari's are on the pitch.

He was also a very good and pioneering manager - signing two Dutch players when he was Ipswich manager, and achieving success in Holland, Spain and Portugal (I believe) as well as England. Of other English managers I can only think of two - Roy Hodgson and Terry Venables - who have had any significant successes abroad. I think his somewhat bumbling and modest appearance disguised a good footballing brain, and playing in the 50s and 60s he must have been pretty bloody tough too.
