"Ask, she said, and ask is what I did." - RF In my recently established extreme adoration of the Go-Betweens, the resulting voracious appetite for their music was, initially, easily rewarded. However, I’m in the barrel-bottom-scraping stage; a few of those missing links have come gradually, but slowly. What follows is a list of official/notable GBs music I have no access to. Perhaps some of you are familiar with, or even in possession of, any of it, and good for you: 1. The original B-side versions of “Just a King” and “Rare Breed”. 2. Any 12” versions (i.e. “Cut it Out”) that were not included on the CD reissues. 3. Basically, any 78 - 90 official ‘tweens releases that weren’t on the bonus discs (though I think those three are the only ones; maybe some of Five New Songs was missing.) 4. “The Land That Time Forgot” from the “Baby Stones” B-side. 5. Grant’s Live Last Monday promo cassette. 6. “Lonely Boy” from the Australian “Drop” EP. 7. The Aussie “Surround Me” EP (I’ve got “What Went Wrong” and “If I Fall Behind”). 8. The non-album tracks from the “2541” EP. 9. “Time Stays Away” from the Australian Comet Scar single. 10. The live tracks on the “Surfing Magazines” single. 11. “Instant Replay”, “Girl Lying On a Beach” and “Taxi Taxee”. 12. The Worlds Apart EP and the Oceans Apart bonus live disc. 13. The Robert-produced/involved stuff by Baby You Know. In a sense, this is the birthday list I would give to my friends if any of them knew the first thing about where to find them, or much about the Go-Betweens. (“Watershed” and “Tallulah” are two of my girlfriend’s favorite albums, which is a start.) It does not seem unreasonable that there are people out there – fans, perhaps, who post on message boards – who might be able to direct me toward any of these rare, out-of-print, pieces of discographical miscellany. I wonder if I’ll ever find any people like that. On a completely unrelated note, my e-mail address is thepozniaks@yahoo.com (named after my band). And, on a very related note, I assume that if the content of this particular message, by which I mean no harm, is disingenuous or inappropriate, an administrator will not post it. My most gracious regards, Victor |

Good sir, I would love that. Let me know how best to make that easy on you; again the e-mail is up there. I do like Danger In The Past quite a bit -- just not a few select songs. Thanks again! |

And if you want a copy of the 7" 'Baby Stones' (for 'The Land That Time Forgot') I'll get it to you. Do you have a turntable still ? I tried to give a spare copy away ages ago on this forum, but nobody responded. It is in a picture sleeve and rather bizarrely was given away free in the UK at the time of release. I've enjoyed your comments too, although I feel that describing 'Warm Nights' as 'almost vengefully pleasure-resistant' is way off the mark. I love that recording ! But as you point out there are wide differences in what we like and dislike. For example, 'Oceans Apart' is the worst G-Bs record for me: (aside from the horrible sound of it), with the quality of songs it would have made a great 4 track ep. |

Being a production junkie is indeed as divisive a stance as being a melody junkie -- I can't imagine how many contributors here go crazy over the eternally soporific song I quoted at the beginning of my post. (Which 4 OA songs, now?) I've written you back, Andrew; now that I've read this I understand you are indeed talking about sending a physical copy, which I would greatly appreciate. You'll have to let me know about shipping, as I live in an uncommon continent for Go-Betweens fans. I do indeed have a turntable (having been born between Liberty Belle and Tallulah, "still" is perhaps inappropriate) -- I just eBayed for a gorgeous LP copy of 1978 - 1990. I knew all the songs, but I finally got to read the notes, and hold the package in my hands. |

By a personal religious doctrine, or overpolicing parents? Or that tricky institution sometimes referred to as "the law"? I appreciate your hypothetical offer, Mr. rodgers, but have already received more than 60% of these from a handful of generous and lovely persons on this board. |

The initial release of "Oceans Apart" with the oversaturation/bad sound on the later tracks was rectified somewhat by LoMax with their swap program for the better mix version. The bass is still mixed way too low for me though. Maybe Bill Inglot who did such a great job remastering Tallulah could do the same for Oceans Apart? |

Ok, Victor, don't be a tease. What uncommon continent for a Go Betweens fan do you live on? Africa? South America? Antarctica? I guess Asia would fit that description if Japan isn't considered part of it. |

The good old Arctic! How can anybody get into the Go-Betweens when all our record stores are on rapidly disappearing icebergs? Gags aside, born and bred in New Jersey, further bred in current residence Texas. So, North America. How many Texans born in '87 do you imagine share this forums' members' GBs zeal? No Americans I've met, bar the ones I've made converts of, have ever even heard of Forster or McLennan (my rockcyclopaedia father an exception, though he dismisses Forster as "too John Cale" and doesn't own any of their records). |

Your father sounds great, Victor. I would get quite a kick out of him. Go Betweens fans are scattered far and wide, which for me is one of their more unexpected charms (though I'm sure it's NOT a charm for Robert's bank account). But of the people on this thread, there is one Scot (I hope I got that right Andrew) living in France and one Queenslander and the rest are in the U.S.. To me the interesting lesson was learned in Brisbane on my first day there visiting with a couple of not-particularly-musical locals. One was about 48 years old and the other about 23. They asked, naturally enough, what brought me to town. (It was Robert's "Four Ages" shows). Neither had ever heard of the Go Betweens. What was that Grant said? It was something like there's no profit in being a prophet in your own land. I very much like contemplating the idea of the subtle aesthetics of the Go Betweens gaining a foothold in TX. And your father's comment is still making me smile. |

You can add an Irishman in Sydney to this thread now Randy! By the way, that quote from Grant comes from an interview I did with him in 2000! |

I think he meant people who had posted to this thread, not the whole board, Spence. And don't sell yourself short - there was a time when a Scot living in England would have been very impressive, indeed : ) Anyhow, I'm a Chicagoan living in Chicago. Talk about your lack of geographic mobility. |
