Kevin, is that Heptones record with or without Leroy Sibbles? How does it stack up?

Randy, its without Leroy Sibbles. Its from the late 70s and is produced by Niney The Observer. I actually got the album title wrong, it should be Deep in the Roots.
Have you heard Sea of Love by The Heptones, its a comp of their Studio One stuff which was released on Heartbeat? Its amazing.

No, Kevin, I haven't heard the "Sea of Love" comp. It will be interesting to hear what they do with the soggy title song. For the Heptones, all I have is the Trojan comp and two of their albums. The Trojan comp has none of their Studio One stuff so thank you very much for the head's up on that. According to the notes on Amazon, it's all rock steady--my favorite JA musical period. And Heartbeat usually pulls things from good sound sources. That's one of the odd and sometimes frustrating things about Jamaican artists back then: they'd record for several different major producers at the same time and no record labels can get all the rights.

Randy, its a great version of Sea of Love, although I cant compare it to the original as I havent heard it. Another great Studio One release is On Top which is basically a greatest hits album.

Kevin, I'm so glad you got me to go trolling through Amazon. In addition to the Heptones' set, I found ANOTHER promising Heptones set also consisting of Studio One recordings that does not overlap with "Sea of Love," a great (and already out of print, but one used copy was waiting for me!) CD release of the one-and-only LP done by the Cables (another Coxsone act) and a collection by a group I've never heard of before--The Tennors--and a brilliant anthology of the Ethiopians that seems to perfectly step around the stuff already released on Trojan's anthology of this group. So, my mail slot will be dropping all sorts of rock steady goodness quite soon.

Meanwhile, listening to :

Pigram Bros--Jiir This Oz indigenous country band is growing on me in a serious way.

In the U.S. country music long ago deteriorated to a test-marketed pop affectation with little or no connection to the rural world that spawned it. Even the vaunted alt-country is generally just some youngish rock musicians donning a suit of musical clothes for the occasion before they change their outfits and ape something else. In big empty Australia, the country's unlucky have embraced it and invested it with all of the soul that ours once had.

Very nice, Great bunch of songs, it belongs on el!, reminds me of High Llamas and the GB's in places, its quite a feat, Jeff plays everything and there's a lovely female voice on there too.

I love British Sea Power, something typically English-eccentric about them.

Currently America's Folk Heroes (Woody Guthrie).

Skull, no I don't think so, their early stuff was more JD for me. They play with a passion, which is more than the REAL 3rd rate Bunnymen imposters do, such as, Editors etc etc ") And they have lived past their second album, who does that nowdays?

I have to say I am with Kev on this one, when BSP first arrived on the scene I read the interviews and saw the photos and liked the Haircut 100/Bunnymen/ACR look with the trees on stage eccentricity. Then heard the records which just dont deliver much more than a Bunnymen/U2-all a bit pompous and quite boring heard it too many times before limpid rock. Have tried to go back to them on each new release and they havent got any better to these ears. They still look good in their videos though!

O.K.
You were right Kevin/Sculldisco!
I bought the Sun Giant ep at the height of your blathering about Fleet Foxes last year and never really heard any great SONGS on it so stayed clear of the album....stupid move!
What a great album!!
Since I made THAT mistake, probably spurred on by your repeated negative critiques of a certain Liverpool quartet, I got that Animal Collective album too. Not an easy listen but some very tasty bits coming through on the first couple of listens so far.... but the Fleet Fox's album is too good to take off yet!
Just bought the new Church single "Pangaea". This is much more like it from them! GREAT.
Their myspace site has another teaser (from the forthcoming album) called "Happenstance" ( - not a cover of the db's song!) and that's fab too. Could be a good year for music....

Kevin,
That is by no means a Mercury Cyclone that Neko is kneeling on the hood of on the cover of Middle Cyclone, it's a 1967 Mercury Cougar. I know there aren't a lot of Mercury Cyclones that are still amongst us as Mercury never sold that many compared to the nearly identical 1967 Ford Fairlane, but here is a 1967 Mercury Cyclone:

The Howling Bells got a big wrap in some quarters here in Auz early last year I think. Sioux/Pretenders style I think from memory they were saying. I know they're playing in Sydney soon as part of some multiband gig/festival/type thing. I think I checked out the website/myspace site and they were OK to good. Are they being raved about OS?

I heard a single when they were first around which was good but when the first album came out I think they had used Coldplay's producer and they sounded as if they could become sterile and stadium boring or cool and interesting depending on which way they wanted to go. Which path did they choose?

Geoff, I came across a The Howling Bells CD single the other day and wondered whatever had become of them. They used to be an average indie pop band called Waikiki and then one day changed their name to The Howling Bells and changed their music to a heavier, PJ Harvey-ish style. Not without its charms, but fatally derivative I think.

Obama's speech to congress at 2am this morning. Really inspirational delivery, great speech writer too, this was better than the inaugural. I know he still has to deliver, but what he said and the way he delivered it, was light years in comparison to everything that has happened c/o Bush and co in the last stinky, mosh pit ridden last 8 years. Now its back to Gordon Brown et al over here, oh fu*kin hell, shoot me...

Ditto on the Glen C. album...Mr. Forster actually did a very nice writeup on it when it came out.

Citizen Steely Dan - one of those box sets I can pull out of an evening and happily listen straight through. Even the weaker cuts are shored up by all the stronger ones.

My very favorite Glen Campbell moment is him doing "Guess I'm Dumb," written for him by Brian Wilson. In fact, that might be one of the top 5 greatest recorded moments in pop history.

My favourite album by Glen Campbell is Reunited With Jimmy Webb. It collects together the songs from the Reunion album ( eight of the ten songs were written by Webb while the other two were written by his sister Susan Webb and Lowell George of Little Feat respectively ) plus all of the other Webb composition he recorded between 1974 and 1988.

Currently listening to:-

Khancoban - Limbs May Fall
An Horse - Not Really Scared ( EP )
Oliver Mann - Sings
Oliver Mann - The Possum Wakes At Night
We Grow Up - Night Kitchen

My local thrift shop had an influx of CDs this week, and for a pittance I picked up three comps, one of which I used to own and was very happy to get reacquainted with: The Specials' "The Singles Collection."

Also got Bowie's "The Singles Collection," which a number of you may've perused before, but which is new to me. A pretty good walkthrough IMO - Disc One barely makes a misstep, and though Disc Two doesn't end soon enough (after "Blue Jean" would be fine, thanks) the biggest quibble I've got is the omission of the original "Cat People," though I understand it was available on some versions (it probably came where "Wild is the Wind" is now). It sure as hell beats "Best of Bowie," which I had the misfortune to hear not long ago - odd choices, edited versions galore (some so bad it sounded like the CD was skipping), and more than half of the second disc devoted to post-"Never Let Me Down." Speaking of edited versions, does anyone know why "Heroes" gets singled out for radical chopping on every comp I've heard? It's perhaps the song of his in which build is most essential to its power, and when he's bellowing by the second verse it just doesn't work.

Next up: The Jam's Greatest Hits

Allen, spot on about Bowies Heroes. A terrible edit edit of what is perhaps one of the greatest songs of all time - certainly one of the best in Bowies canon

Driving around to clients yesterday, a lovely, day, the passage to Spring, in the changer were:
The Concubines - pining for the Fjords
The Pale Fountains - Pacific Street
Shack - Miles and Gil
The Smiths - Rank
The Smiths - The World won't listen.

The Smiths blew me away, they were an unbelievably original and almost timeless force.

Johnny Cash, Dave Alvin, Big Maceo, Bo Diddley, Mississippi John Hurt, the wonderful Baskery and more. It's a great comp.

It's not in stores for another week and a half, so I was very pleasantly surprised to find my copy of "Quiet Please...the New Best of Nick Lowe" in the mailbox today. Summary upon first listen: due to a couple of major omissions and two or three minor ones I prefer the "Basher" comp as a summary of the 70s and 80s, but the choices here are far from a disgrace - the pool of choices is so deep one can't go too far wrong. And until Yep Roc reissues the 6 still OOP albums from that period (which I trust they're working on), these are pure gold.

There's maybe two or three too many selections from his last four records, especially considering they're all readily available, but all in all it makes a strong case for that phase of his career - even makes "The Convincer," an album I've found way too bland sound like something to hear.

Also includes a DVD with 9 extremely cute vintage videos and an entire '07 live show. Happy to own it.

I've been doing a bit of that myself, specifically The Peel Sessions and The Friends of Rachel Worth, my favorite of the Mach II albums - tunes and guitar parts and moods that flow from one song to the next in a gestalt that I love sinking into.

To Start Happy Birthday Padraig, any many more happy ones!

I'm currently listening to the Rugby League Challenge Cup draw, its a little bit of a niche listen... I wouldn't recommend it. Widnes are playing Halifax (Away) for anyone interested!!

Musically, just put on the cd86 compilation which, I think the kids term is 'bigged up', a while back. Its still very good, and made me think about CDing the original NME C86 tracks. That sounds a job for the weekend - will 22 tracks fit on 1 CD - I'll let you know!!

Cheers
Jon

Microdisney - peel sessions.

I love this CD. I love the way the first three songs, Sun, moon and Dreaming Drains, open the door to their sad claustophobia. The sound is very 4 track Tascam in the bedroom type sound. On moon, you can start to hear Sean's influence on their future sound, the bassline structure, the guitar embellishments, and the overall melody. I also love on Dreaming Drains the chance to hear Cathal start to come out of his shell, like Roddy Frame early on, he retained his hometown accent, rather than going American, this song actually reminds me of jeff W's latest music from Pining for the fjords, I can see a resemblance to Cathal there in his lyrics and also there's Jeffs lovely skills in his music. Everybody is dead is now on, what a scorcher, I\d love to cover this sorta honest beautiful music, the end of this song is still as frenetic and energetic today as it was the first time I was shocked to hear it!. Cathal is God. Oh, and so is Sean...

Spence, Microdisney's Peel Sessions are great, aren't they. What's really interesting about them is that whereas most bands' Peel Sessions possess more energy or rawness, Microdisney's earlier sessions were moodier and melancholy, almost kind of druggy, like they'd taken downers before recording. And that lends the songs a unique atmosphere, differing from the already unique atmosphere on their studio recordings. But then along comes Everybody is Dead and that ending is like John Cale's most extreme coked-up freak-out multiplied by 10. I would love to have seen Microdisney live.

That's funny Jeff, considering how much BRMC ripped off JAMC initially.

Right now I'm listening to The Essential Men At Work. Down Under is a stone classic (and I'll brook no argument on that point) but nothing else they did comes close to essential. A few good pop tunes though.

Padraig,
I got the c86 tape when it came out, or when I stole it from my older cooler brother. It had 22 tracks on it, most of the bands feature on the cd86, but the majority are different tracks. The Cure freebie was a good addition, in fact I only get the NME when its got something with it now, as I feel they're more interested in cool than music.

Currently got disc 6 of The Wedding Present complete Peel sessions - Live at Reading 1996.

Cheers

Jeff, if ever there were two classic Indie milestone 7'' vinyl releases that were meant to be together/ be released concurrently, it was The Missionary and Sorry For Laughing. From the sleeve design to the missing vinyl centre, a pure match made in heaven.

Actually, funny story this, way back in '86 a guy had SFL 7'' on his stall at one of these record fairs, and I put a deposit down on it as i was skint, and i didn't see him again for 2 years at another record fair in a completely different city, and Gawd bless him he remembered that I had put a minimal deposit on it and i paid the additional Ł4 and it was MINE!!!!

The NME has been utter younger generation pap for a long time now, it wwas at its best last in '87.

Neko Case - Middle Cyclone. First pass listen, and it's a keeper for sure and will be in my top 10 for 2009.

Jeff, I love the Let's Active afoot ep, so poppy and perfect in it's own way. I bought it on vinyl way back in 1983 based on the 1982 Village Voice Pazz and Jop poll about the same time I bought Chronic Town. Hard to beat those two 1982 ep's. Mitch Easter was like a god back in 1982-84 time period.

Spence, many thanks to you and Randy for turning me onto the stuff!

Michael - yes, Afoot really is a perfect EP. I love how it's not just sunny pop; how there's some nuance and moodiness in places, which gives it more depth. Cypress is quite good, too!

No probs Jeff, glad to spread my infatuation!

Warsaw - some recordings pre Joy Division. Really fascinating, to hear Ian Curtis sounding like Shaun Ryder from The Happy mondays!! He obviously let his Manchester/northern accent shiiiiiine initially, then he developed a slight American touch to his voice, which made it sound incredible in Joy Division. Also interesting to hear Stephen Morris, really trying to emulate a drum machine, Bernard with his trademark, low lead notes to high lead notes, beautiful strumming technique, filled with passion, just short of real rock, and ol Hooky with his pre Adam Cayton style of rolling bass lines, that eventually gets up to speed and takes over with mesmorising lead style bass playing that is all together fuc*ing awesome.

By the way, Rhino are rereleasing the recent new Order Cd remasters, this time remastered!!!!

Stuff I really don't like !

Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase

The old theory of the monkey and a dictionary coming up with the works of Shakespeare applies. But in this case the monkey would have a computer and ProTools (even if Boc claim to use only analog gear apparently). This CD will be used in the garden to frighten the birds away from the strawberries.

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

Lord knows that I have tried. But it stills sounds like an overblown Frankenstein's monster of Bunnymen sewn together with Brooocie. Stop the glockenspiel NOW.

Last night, Little Richard - The Veejay Years

I can't hear much good on Neon Bible either, Andrew. The first E.P. & Funeral are much more palatable.

Yes, Jeff, the Monochromes' album is one of the few upcoming releases that I signed up for as soon as it became possible to order. "Lost Weekend" has been the gaping hole in my MS collection for a long long time.

Tonight I'll be listening to the CARE package from upstate New York that I found leaning against my front door today:

Jazz Butcher --Scandal in Bohemia
Jazz Butcher --Distressed Gentlefolk
Max Eider --Best Kisser in the World

And--weirdly enough--ALL of them are signed. No idea if they're real signatures or if the seller forges them. They didn't cost much more than unsigned copies from other sellers so I figured why not? If they're forgeries that'll almost be cooler: Pat Fish and Max Eider as art fraud subjects!

And after that I'll play The Tactics' "Sound of the Sound Vol. 1" which also fell through the mail slot today.

Good win for Ireland, though it got a bit too close in the last 5 minutes - Wales having a kick to win it in the last minute. I'm happy to say that Wales & Ireland were by far the best two teams...who play rugby!!!! If only England had a go at it on occasions.

Good football results today also....United and Chelsea getting beat, Liverpool to do the usual messing it up tomorrow.

Listening to an album by a band called The Boat People, who I think are from Australia, I've not heard too much of them, but it sounds quite good. Its your typical Australia summer sounds.

Cheers
Jon

It might be my favorite Buzzcocks (proper studio) album, come to think of it. Hollow Inside, I Believe, Raison d'Etre , the title track, etc... - great stuff, in my view. Sure, it's got a couple of clunkers, but overall, I really like it!

My honest take on the Buzzcocks is that they were primarily a singles band, which is why Singles Going Steady has been, by far, the most often played Buzzcocks album in my house over the years. I listen to that more than any of the studio albums. But as the studio albums go, I do like Tension.

Singles is my album of choice as well, though I also have real fondness for the lengthier best-of Operator's Manual, which collects up lots of nice bits that aren't on the former album. And Lest We Forget is a pretty good live album, dim sound and all.

A Different Kind Of Kitchen is the only Buzzcocks I've got so far, I rather like it. It does tend to get short shrift in relation to the 1st 2 LP's.

Rhett Miller - The Instigator

Depeche Mode - Music For The Masses

Thom Yorke - The Eraser Remixes

Wedding Present - Hit Parade 2

The Boat People are from Brisbane I think Jon but I haven't heard anything by them for a couple of years. Friends of mine had an ep and it was ok.

Rust Never Sleeps - how great is this album (except Welfare Mothers)

Untitled #23 - The Church. One absolute classic and a lot of B-sides (so far...)

No line on the Horizon - I really hated their last 2 but this is not bad. Can't be too bad if it samples "The Pearl" (Budd/Eno). That Coldplay album also has a sample of Brian Eno's from "Apollo". Sounds like the producer is trying to get people to discover his back catalogue.
(Not a bad thing IMHO). Poor choice of FIRST single, just like the Church (again...groan).

John Lennon/Plastic Ono band - Seriously, this might be up your alley Skully. F'n brilliant.

Love that POB one...was just listening to it as part of my soundtrack to Philip Norman's recent John bio. I also liked this little bit of low key sarcasm from the book:

""Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" was instantly banned by the BBC for spelling out the letters of the drug that increasingly dominated headlines. John retorted that the song had nothing to do with LSD but was simply the title of a painting his son Julian had done at school - a story which Paul would later corroborate. It is a plausible enough explanation if one accepts that John never took acid or encouraged its use, that he was completely word blind, and that he took an ongoing and responsive interest in Julian's schoolwork."

Geoff, do you mean the Lennon/Ono Band record that was his first studio solo album, with "Mother" and "Working Class Hero" on it? Yeah, that's a great album--period. It makes me laugh that Lennon had Phil Spector produce a record full of arrangements with only three or four instruments.

Currently listening to The Sound's Jeopardy. Thank you very much, Jeff!

Spence, I give a double thumb up to Mermaid Avenue by Billy Bragg and Wilco. The 1998 album consists of unpublished works of Woody Guthrie set to new music in which Bill and Wilco's Jeff Tweedy share mosy of the vocal duties with the exception of one lead local by Natalie Merchant. It's not a patchwork effort by any means and any serious collector should really consider adding it to their collection if they don't have it.

Currently playing Frank Black - Frank Black Francis. Some pretty cool arrangements of loads of Pixies songs, kinda pared back and more sonically textured, really good.

Marianne Faithful - "Easy Come, Easy Go"

If anything gives the lie to the "American Idol"-supported (but certainly not invented) concept that vocal pyrotechnics=good music, this does. Like, say, Dylan, she invests something in these songs that goes far, far deeper than your typical "Idol" belter could manage in a year's worth of studio takes. It's lovely stuff, in its way, but more than that it's moving. Excellent.

today the new neil young album has been released in germany. what should i say. it's neil young, but the most of the stuff is crap (by first listening). uninspired and boring. but as on every abum of that good old man is the one or other fine song. to name the few: just singing a song, off the road and the acoustic highlight light a candle. classics (maybe). the rest is rumbling and lazily executed. what a pity.

Got that one on order, Rob, and am looking forward to it. It's part of my two-part birthday present to myself, the other being an out-of-print Nick Lowe CD that I'm paying a fairly ridiculous amount of money for, but I miss having it around, so what the frak.

So, Rob, the Faithfull record really stands up? I haven't gotten it. I was worried that it had come out too soon after her last one which I thought came out too soon after the one before it. She can be VERY erratic.

Right now:

Blue Orchids--The Greatest Hit
to hell with all that professionalism shit.

I still haven't bought MF's Broken English on cd for some reason, and I used to play my vinyl copy a lot in the early 80's until I fell for the music of Kate Bush. I shall have to rectify that very soon and get Broken English on order.

Speaking of Broken English (the song), it's writer Barry Reynolds released a great cover of it on his stellar early 80's album I Scare Myself. Barry also was a session player on MF's BE as well. Too bad Barry's ISM was never promoted much, as the whole album is a corker! Highly recommended by me for those who don't have it or never heard of it.

Michael, I've heard really positive comments about his album before. Thanks for reminding me of it. If it's your own song can it be a cover?

Last night: the Concubines' Pining for the Fjords. On the headphones. After a luxo meal with wine and one nice little draw. My crazed contemporaneous report forthcoming, Jeff, after I review it and purge the most outlandishly self-indulgent bits.

Allen, back at you. I admire a man who will pay top dollar for an out-of-print Nick Lowe CD. Which one?

Randy, I think this one really does stand up. I'm with you - she CAN be erratic. For some reason - the Hal Wilner production, the performance, the tunes, etc. - hits me just right.

Rob, it's "The Rose of England," my favorite of his 80s records. I considered "Labour of Lust," but I hear rumblings that Yep Roc's going to be doing up a special bells-and-whistles edition of that one...but I doubt they're going to be getting to "Rose" anytime soon.

Doves - Kingdom of Rust. Unfortunately it may be aptly named!
Bob Dylan - The Basement tapes
Midlake - the Trials of Van Occupanther. Sounding like Fleetwood Mac...this is not a good thing!
Coldplay - Viva la Vida and Prospekts March.
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular.
On the Beach - Neil Young.
Rust Never Sleeps - Neil Young.

Geoff, you made me laugh out loud. I used to offer folks my copy of "Van Occupanther" for free. Nobody was amused. And nobody accepted.
