I was going to do it soon anyway, but I was inspired by Victor to do it yesterday - I made up CDRs of the two disc version of 1978 - 1990, using the tracks which are all available either on the single disc version or the double disc copies of the GBs phase 1 albums.

It took a lot longer to compile everything than I'd planned. A couple of tracks - Cattle And Cane and the shorter version of This Girl, Black Girl - are only on 1978 - 1990, so I had to use those versions in the absence of remastered versions. I also had to make m4a copies (at 320kbps) of some tracks as I was unable to get the Roxio software to recognise them if they were on discs that also contained videos!

It was all worth it in the end as it was such a joy to play it last night, particularly disc 2, which sounded amazing.

Nostalgia is a beautiful well to repeatedly dip in and find reasons to live, isn't it?

The idea of a petition for your remastered dream of 78 - 90 comes to mind. Then again, I don't they ever released Time Fades Away on CD, and that has a petition whose signatures equal the population of a small country. And yet the 20th and 25th anniversaries for 78/90 are looming -- perhaps Forster the Strategist and Beggars Banquet will do something about that.

True, true, although I guess iTunes makes this exercise easily enough to replicate as a playlist anyway. I made a 78/90 playlist on my computer a few years ago and play it occasionally ... the (shorter) CD version of that album was my first introduction to my now-favourite band. It's probably the best single-disk career anthology of any band I can think of.

Here's a thought for a thread: best best-ofs? Or, best-ofs that turned your personal world around?

I'm sure we've done that at the very least once and probably more...but it's always a good one.
