Go Colin! Keep 'em coming! I don't know how many times I gave Wire's "A Bell is A Cup....Until It Is Struck" a spin in 1988, but believe me it was a lot. |

Jazz nut that I am, I have not yet gotten to the point where I appreciate the solo works of Pharaoh Sanders, Albert Ayler or any of the other free jazz cats. Maybe some day, but until then I've still got plenty of bebop and hard bop jazz that I've yet to explore. |

Michael, you're right. there is a lot of things to explore on that wide field of jazz. i like that sanders and ayler stuff, but not all is really good. the a.m. song from the album Tauhid has a repetitive theme that i like very much. the rest of the album isn't that good. |

The Room - New Dreams for old. Bloody great band from Liverpool in the 80's, everytime I hear this song I wait for John Peel to come in. Later they went onto form Benny Profane, much edgier and no less as brilliant as The Room |

Matthew Sweet - Divine Intervention Matthew's Girlfriend album from late 1991 still sounds great some 17 years later, unlike 99% of the grunge crap from the same period. The gutiars from Richard Llyod and Robert Quine and drums from Fred Maher are stellar. I remember first buying it between Christmas and New Years Day in 1991. I've got the the double disc Legacy Edition now and the sound is improved a bit, great liner notes and the second disc which are the demos for Girlfriend. A month and a half later in mid-February of 1992 I got to see Matthew open up for Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians, one of the best concerts I've ever attended. |

Nice one Spence, I know I've made my love of the Room known around these parts. IMO, the neglect suffered by the Room is one of the great injustices in music. Song of the day for me: Tones on Tail - Twist |

Jeff, yes my friend, I thought exactly the same on Saturday when listening to said track, an injustice. Ringing was a great tune of Fireworks, must get some of their stuff on CD. Tones on tail jeff!>? Was that Daniel from bauhaus? Michael, yes i agree Sweet's Girlfriend was and still is a real great album. I adored Quine's sound, much more raw and less studied than lloyd, though they work so well together in the company of Matthew. |

French disko - Stereolab on the Word on You tube. This is rare! (in the Scots sense, I mean). I kind of dipped into the 'lab when I was younger, but never really with great keenness. This, and the recent posts around here, convince me I have to do some research... |

Stuart, I remember seeing them do this on The Word too, I thought it was good. Also like you, I never really got into them. The only reason I had some interest in them was the McCarthy connection - Tim, and Lćtitia, there was a lot of mystery surrounding them at first, and to be honest, i was too wrapped up in other stuff to go investigating, to unravel the mystery! I have a couple of albums, but I could happily live without them, I always thought broadcast were a pale imitation of Stereolab, however they sorta eclipsed S/lab in the poupularity stakes, although I love the look and voice of Trish Keenan, who incidentally I knew years ago, as she was friends with an old band I was in and used to hang around with us and carry the odd amp to a gig! I also remember her singing Simon and Garfunkel tunes in bus stops whilst waiting for the night bus home on many occasion! |

Spence, I'm not sure Broadcast have eclipsed anyone in the popularity stakes unless you know something I dont. Stereolab are and were a brilliant band that I have followed since I heard a track from Space Age Bachelor Pad Music on Out on Blue Six - Mark Radcliffe's old radio show. I have every one of their albums and each and every one contains a gem or two. Their music contains elements of many things I love - krautrock, french pop, groovy soundtracks, brazilian music. I have seen them live on numerous occasions and they have rarely been anything short of brilliant. I vehemently disagree with Jeff and anyone else who claim that they are a spent force and Margerine Eclipse their first album without Mary is up their with their best. I will however concede that they lack and have always lacked an emotional core but at their worst they are a thousand times better than most rock music independent or otherwise. |

Cosmo, I agree with your last line, 'they are a thousand times better than most rock music independent or otherwise.' I never saw them live, but I would imagine, they would've been a spectacular experience. Maybe i'll take some time to explore their back catalogue one day too! Re Broadcast, I don't know anything you don't!, it was an off the cuff comment based upon the amount of attention Broadast have gotten in various blogs, news and reviews and in industry (hate the word) music mag sales etc that i have read about over the years, I cant vouch for any stats etc, it just seemed to me like they had become much more popular, I have no evidence though! |

No worries Spence, I am a big Broadcast fan but dont think they have ever achieved much in the way of success in terms of fans or sales. Stereolab will tour to good crowds around the country whereas I cant imagine Broadcast headlining more than a one-off show in their home town or London if at all |

Nat King Cole wrote a song called Nature Boy - as covered by The Great Society - and I don't know Mr Cave's work well enough to know whether it's a cover version or a new song with the same name. The only time I saw Nick Cave was when he was in the audience for Ed Kuepper in Camden. He looked very, very cool. |

Cosmo, I think 'Flick The Vs' is a wonderful album. Two Frocks At A Wedding, Coast On By, Nothing Rings True and Curtain Craft are particular favourites. I have also been listening to his previous release ( Bombshell ) a lot recently. |

Bombshell is good, KC Rules OK also (and contains one of my favourite lyrics 'i gave up half of me heart and you gave a half hearted shrug' in 'Not one bit ashamed')but the dearest place in my heart is reserved for Rocket D.I.Y which was the first one I got |

New Musik - World of Water again. This one of those songs that I will be feverishly obsessed with for about three days, after which I'll become totally sick of it. Like all the best bubblegum! |

I love New Musik's first album "From A to B", so many great songs besides World of Water to name here. In fact, I had it in the 11th spot in my Best of 1980 list: 1. The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight 2. Talking Head - Remain in Light 3. Joy Division - Closer 4. X - Los Angeles 5. Echo and The Bunneymen - Crocodiles 6. The Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro 7. The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms 8. Peter Gabriel - Melting Face (III) 9. Pretenders - Pretenders 10. Colin Newman - A-Z 11. New Musik - From A to B 12. Squeeze - Argybargy 13. Kate Bush - Never For Ever 14. Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth 15. David Bowie - Scary Monsters 16. Ultravox - Vienna 17. Devo - Freedom Of Choice 18. Dire Straits - Making Movies 19. Prince - Dirty Mind 20. XTC - Black Sea Hard to believe, but used and new cd's like my 16 track Edsel Records edition of "From A to B...plus" (that I bought new five years ago and is now out of print)are going from $172.94 to $199.99 on amazon. That might make my copy of From A to B my most valuable cd in my collection. |

Michael, nice! I have to admit that I've been largely ignorant to New Musik's oeuvre. The only thing I've ever had was the 10" with Straight Lines, which I'd kind of neglected. I pulled it out the other day and was really impressed with it. I then promptly went on a Youtube hunt and found the World of Water video. Just today I hopped over to Amoeba on my lunch break and snatched up a copy of their second album, Anywhere, from the dollar bin. I haven't heard anything from that album. I'm trying to locate From A to B. Looks like a reissue with fewer bonus tracks can be had pretty cheaply on Amazon, so that may be what I go with. The thing that really strikes me about them (based on what little I've heard) is that their songs really take some nice, unpredictable melodic twists and turns. Great 1980 list, by the way. |

Nice list indeed. I'd have to kick Dire Straits out & somehow shoehorn The Affectionate Punch, Sound Affects, Sandinista & More Specials in it's place. Erm... Bob Dylan - Paths Of Victory - A real song of hope from the finger-pointing years, with two finger piano. |

Pad, I'll have to spend some cash on that band at some point. I always remember people going on about them, and it was one of those where i never ever got around to making my own purchase, and they never showed on any compilation tapes people used to do for me, looks like I missed out, I'm an absolute sucker for flugelhorns and trumpets too, damn!! Breakdown in Vera Cruz, tears a line through my heart, its fu*kin beautiful, Mr Adams got me into it. I agree with Jeff and jerry, the affectionate punch is a well underrated masterpiece. I remember seeing the running track cover with Rankine and Mackenzie on in my best friend's brother's bedroom, just lying there at the front of a stack of effin cool albums and 12 inchers. It freaked me out, it was what the hell??!! I had to invetigate. I was 11 in early 1980 when me and my mate put it on his brother's deck. i couldn't understand what the hell was going on. then a couple of years, my mate's bro, who was largely responsible for putting me on the right musical track played me this song called party fears two and I never looked back. I then revisited TAP and then its subsequent remix album, which I liked too, though it was slightly more polished, I believe MAc and Rankine thought the remix album a commercial disaster. I loved the original TAP's dry sound, so pure, Mackenzie's vocals worked with the music but he always sounded at odds with the music, but it worked, so, so well. Particular faves, Amused as always, the xylophone ending, The Germanic krautrock sounding LoganTime was a beauty, Matter of Gender and that bassline, Dempsey showing us all how utterly unique his playing would develop later on into on the Sulk album. A just makes me laugh, the kinda lyrics you'd write as a 9 year old in your first band! I have live recordings of Associates playing with Josef K in 1980, and people I know who saw them at that time said they really rocked hard, a real fu*kin rock band! Who'd of thought!? |

Flying Burrito Brothers - Four Days of Rain It's been raining all day here but stopped when I put this on. It's on the third Burrito's album which is not great but also contains a really good version of Tried So Hard by Gene Clark |

Spence, you started me on a 1000 Violins nostalgia trip and a google search revealed a site run by one of the band which included a photo of ticket for a gig at Southampton University in 1989 which I was at, tickets were four pounds (and there were about four people there) and the gig was really good as I still remember it well. I am now attempting a u-turn in the one way street that is memory lane lest I disappear in to thoughts of DJing before the June Brides (who played to the same four people) at Riverside in Southampton and a hundred other glorious jangly gigs in thev 80s |

She's The Kind Of Girl - Gene Clark, or should I say The Byrds? From my newly arrived copy of Gene's Roadmaster cd. Cosmo, If Gene's Here Tonight from Roadmaster would have appeared on the Burrito's third album, no doubt that album would rate higher. |

Michael, Yes and it would have been great had he joined the band. I am reading Hot Burritos but havent got to the Gene Clark tie up yet so dont know the story. The version of Tried So Hard on the album isnt the single version with Gene(but you get both versions on the CD) but actually with the exception of the vocal sounds much better - although maybe the master available wasnt as good for the single. The third album is worth getting for Tried So Hard, Four Days of Rain, All Alone but is mostly just bland. That said Burrito Deluxe is no great shakes either |

That's the Rick Roberts version of the Burritos, right? I haven't heard that in probably 35 years. My recollection is that he was super dull. There were a lot of those cloying vapid "country rock" bands in California in those years. They were interchangeable. Burrito Deluxe: proof of Gram Parsons' inability to stay interested in anything for very long. |

Burrito Deluxe had what, a couple of good songs and Wild Horses? Too bad Gram was more interested in hanging around with Keith Richards instead of writing songs with Chris Hillman. Losing Chris Ethridge didn't help matters either. The magic the band had recording Gilded Palace Of Sin was nowhere to be found due to Gram's lack of interest, so Randy is correct about Gram. Maybe the trust fund he got made it too easy for him to lose interest? I don't think Gram would have lasted much longer then a year or so if he didn't die in 1973. Due to the after effects of a motorcycle crash and mixing his anti-seizure meds with way too much booze and drugs, he was certainly on borrowed time. I do think we would have released a follow-up to Greivous Angel with Emmylou though if he had lasted another year, and that makes me sad. |
