Rainer Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz I'm almost tempted to put this on Favorite TV Shows...it's billed as "a film in 13 parts with an epilogue," but it has the form of a series, was first aired on German TV (to an increasingly hostile audience) and, for instance, it's nearly twice as long as The Office in its entirety. Either way, what a f**king trip... |

Night Gallery A Rod Serling anthology show from the early 70s I used to be absolutely mad for. About half of the stories hold up, mostly because Serling was a very erratic writer - sharp as a tack when he was on, embarrassingly heavy-handed when he wasn't. |

And for anyone interested, here's one of his sharper moments. Messagey, certainly, but it's a good message, delivered well, and very entertaining. Like one of the comments says, good story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvXcjDCQ9 _I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDSdOLwkf fE&feature=related |

The Grapes of Wrath Henry Fonda the epitome of quiet dignity, truly stunning cinematography, two hours with a lump in one's throat. As rich and honest as Hollywood gets. |

Apparently it was also one of those rare occasions where the author loved the film, despite the inevitable watering down, which, for its time, wasn't much. I'm betting that even today the last section of the book (and certainly the last scene) would have nervous studio execs demanding changes. |

The Wire, final season. I've had it a while but have been saving it. They have got the dynamics and politics of a newspaper office absolutely right, but I'd expect no less seeing as the co-creator was a reporter for that very paper. |

Watching survivors, its a re-make of a 1970s programme devised by Terry Nation. Its a decent re-make, and now Liverpool are though in the Champions League no future clashes are envisaged. Cheers Jon |

The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard A 2006 British miniseries, a political fable about a suburban supermarket manager and mom who becomes Prime Minister in record time and then has to deal with it. Very good...I just tore through the first three episodes and though it's darn late here am tempted to continue. |

Ashes to ashes - but it's a bitter disappointment after LOM; and what on earth is Keeley Hawes doing going to work in these off the shoulder bits of silky nothing? I keep expecting DI Tennison to march in and give her a good talking to... Dexter 2 - I wasn't crazy about the first series, but it was watchable, and with Dex on the defensive now series two is off to a good start; although it has already played that American TV standby card of the Hot English Babe to Spice Things Up. Odd how strange an English accent sounds surrounded by American ones. ...and the wife tethered me to the sofa after a heavy lunch to watch PS I love you with the usually excellent Hilary Swank; but this is a film whose moral seems to be, Don't worry if your gorgeous Irish hubby pops his clogs, another one will be along in a minute. Will almost put you off Irishmen for life - even if you are one. |

Stuart Ashes to ashes, though not a patch on Life On Mars for story, did it for me because I'm an 80s man. Dexter series two is good, but if you didn't really like the 1st I'm not sure how you'll take to it....only time will tell. It starts tonight in the UK having previously been on satellite television. I've just got a bit of Liverpool FC to watch, we're on quite a lot having got Everton in the FA Cup as well as a league game, Chelsea in the league and Stoke! Cheers Jon |

A far better intelligent comedy about Barcelona (IMO) is "Barcelona"...if you've never seen it and can hunt it down, I'd highly recommend it. I don't think it even made it to DVD over here, but perhaps elsewhere. |

Allen, I'm a huge fan of Whit Stillman's three movies, Metropolitan, Barcelona and Last Days of Disco. Metropolitan was finally released on a DVD via a Criterion Collection edition which I highly recommend. Barcelona is still available on DVD, although not on Criterion, it is highly entertaining and filled with Whit's wit. Last Days of Disco is out of print, but I'm hoping it will be released on Criterion sometime soon. Whit is currently in post-production on a film of Christopher Buckley's novel LITTLE GREEN MEN due out this year. |

Barcelona is the better movie though and deserves a deluxe Criterion Collection edition, but not before Godard's My Life to Live which is also out of print!!! |

Did any of you ever see a TV show called Wild Palms which was exec produced by Oliver Stone? I picked it because his name was on the cover. It's probably the worst TV series I've ever seen. I sat through all six hours hoping at some point it might make sense, but it never did. Utter tripe. I threw it into the recycle bin. No point giving that crap to a charity shop or saying to a friend "It's not my cup of tea, but you might like it..." |

I caught a bit of that when it first aired, Padraig. It was not that long after Twin Peaks, as I recall, and I think the network was hoping for something similar..but surreal and dreamlike is in David Lynch's blood and spirit, whereas it always seems like Stone is working way too hard at it. It didn't help to have Jim Flippin' Belushi in the lead role, either... I'm in the midst of going back through the first half of Battlestar Galactica Season 4 in preparation for the airing of the last ten episodes ever which starts TONIGHT. Can't wait... |

Yes, it occured to me several times that Jim Belushi can't act. They even had the damn cheek to mention the peerless Twin Peaks on the DVD cover, hoping for undeserved acclaim by association. I wish it hadn't fooled me into parting with $10 or whatever it was I wasted on it. |

I seem to recall checking out Wild Palms once when it orignally aired, and never watched it again. Jim Belushi was tolerable in a samll role in Michael Mann's Thief starring James Caan and Tuesday Weld. That was a long time ago though, circa 1981. After TP went off the air in 1991 I didn't watch any show regularly apart from catching most of the Northern Exposure episodes which were really decent until the last couple of seasons. I got hooked on the X-Files though in 1996 towards the end of it's third season. |

Watched the Joy Division Movie last night (not Control - the other one). Some interesting footage I had not seen before. One comment really struck me that their music still sounds 'contemporary' - having listened to Unknown Pleasures today, I think this is really true of Joy Division and is maybe a sign of greatness in a band. Who else would this apply to? Velvet Underground possibly? |

With you on JD and that notion Mr Gull. Personally I find a lot of the other guitar based stuff I listened to at the end of the 70s and early 80s almost unlistenable now. And yes the Velvets are utterly timeless. |

Andrew, could it be because bass/drums led the Joy Division sound, then again they would have sounded a lot different without Martin Hannet at the controls. VU were at their best with John Cale on board & the sound lightened when he jumped ship, or should that be walked the plank. I think you could add Bowie, ,Talking Heads. The Smiths, The Bunnymen, The Doors maybe??? They all have sounds that have been pillaged down the years. |

I'm not sure I can define why Joy Division stand out exactly. The Velvets managed to create virtually a new sound for each record (intentionally or unintentionally !). I can't listen to Bowie anymore. A fraud. The Doors are possibly one of the most overrated groups ever in my opinion. Same thing for The Smiths, although I loved them at the time. Tastes change I guess. Watching: "Jazz on a Summer's Day" and a documentary on the guitarist Seb Martel "les secrets d'une bonne galette" |

Just saw Antonioni's The Blow-up for the first time and loved it. I need to see more of his films. Incidentally, I also recently saw Eros, which consists of three short films - by Wong Kar Wai, Steven Soderbergh, and Antonioni - that touch on the subject of eroticism in vastly different ways. The first two were great, but Antonioni's short was complete, vacuous crap. Go figure. |

Jerry - interesting you say those artists had their sound pillaged because another observation I would make about JD is they have not really been imitated that much - a unique sound - something also again applicable to the VU and The Fall (another bass/drums fronted sound) |

Actually, I would say quite a few bands adopted the Joy Division sound, although several of them probably didn't have a choice as they had Martin Hannett producing them. I mean, look at all these bands, most of whom were on the post-JD Factory roster: The Wake Section 23 The Names A Certain Ratio Stockholm Monsters Crispy Ambulance Tunnelvision (early) Death in June and of course Interpol and then you have countless other bands who were influenced by Joy Division but didn't pillage the sounds so much, or at least incorporated elements of the JD influence into their own vision (bands like the Sound, early U2, and the Bunnymen come to mind...). |

Fair point Jeff, I was n't suggesting there have been no JD imitators. Somehow I feel a difference though between bands that have broken new ground and then launched a host of imitators (Some successful)/a movement e.g. Nirvana and grunge, and JD who still feel relatively dicrete as a 'sound' in their own right. |

C Gull, I know what you mean. I just think that JD did in fact break new ground that resulted in a spawn of imitators/likeminded movement. that movement wasn't mainstream, like grunge, so perhaps it wasn't as immediately obvious. I don't know... |

We all watched it at work this morning in the conference room. Obama delivered a great speech. I kinda wish Justice Robert's hadn't fumbled his lines when administering the actual inaugural procedure, but I like how Obama paused to let him sort it out. |

Nice address by Obama. It hit a lot of the notes that I was hoping he would touch on. A break from the past 16 years for sure, to put away childish things and work together and smartly for a better country and world without the nasty retoric and divisivness. If anyone can fix the mess that the US is in and reach accross the ocean to form a coalition of other nations to fix the worlds problems, it's Obama and his very capable team. |

Spence Hadn't seen any aftershow tickets, so I'll have to have a look around, but its an option. Otherwise I'm sure there's plenty of places open late around that area of Manchester (don't know any off the top of my head mind). I'll have a look and let you know. Watched Liverpool reserves, very sad I know, but we won 2-0, nice one. Missed the 1st episode of the 2nd part of series 4 of Battlestar Galactica, but I'm sure it'll be on a few more times. Finally, I'm going to watch Dave Gorman's American Adventure thingy tonight...he travels America trying not to give money to 'the man'. Cheers Jon |

What's sad about that Jon? 1408 - A Stephen King short story turned into a film. John Cusack & Samuel L. Jackson lend it more depth than the failed marriage backstory. Really it's just as formulaic as the majority of King's work. 'Writer in various slightly different scenario's, has problems which he eventually comes through... ... the end' Not bad s'pose. |

Jon the aftershow tickets are available for friends of the magazine shows myspace page, i've been sent an option to buy one, u want me to get 2? if not don't worry. I watched a great film called The Brave One, with Jodie Foster. She is utterly fantastic in this film, I love the way it tapped into modern day anxieties, its a love story too, Terence Howard is a class actor too. Funny, the film has a soundtrack (bits of gloomy orchestral arrangements similar to Bernard Herrmann's score) that is reminiscent to Taxi Driver, and the revenge tone of the film reminded me of Taxi Driver, and its got Jodie in, who was in, ... Taxi Driver! |

And Jerry, Watching Liverpool reserves might be considered, by some, to be a little over the top. But to be fair, I get as much pleasure watching the youngsters as themulti-millionnaire premiership boys. I'll run through Jon's ones to watch if your not too careful! Cheers Jon |

"Nos enfants nous accuseront" (literally "our children will accuse us") by Jean-Paul Jaud A French documentary about the illnesses caused by what we have done to the environment and specifically the food that we eat. The showing was introduced by a representative of the association that organised the screening who told us we must be all masochists for coming. It is true that films like this often attract those who are already aware of the issues. To me it seems that after decades of spraying heavily toxic chemicals on our fields if there were NO horrible side-effects it would be surprising… France is one of the world leaders in using pesticides in its agriculture, despite the French pride (or arrogance) in its food. Specifically the film deals with a small village Barjac in the Cevennes area of France, which decides to have a communal kitchen (schools and meal deliveries to old people) that makes only meals from organic ingredients. Barjac’s mayor is obviously a persuasive man (and his speeches won applause from the cinema audience) and its experience seems to have been very positive. The support from local farmers was obviously critical and there is an incredible interview with a farmer’s wife in which she confesses that her husband’s nose bleeds for days after he treats his crops. And a friend of theirs cannot urinate for days after he treats. There is fascinating footage comparing organic and conventionally treated vineyards. The difference between the textures of the two soils is clearly shown and the wine-maker points out the clear difference in the depth of top soil that exists today. In 30 years time the treated vineyard will hit rock as the soil is more and more eroded and unable to withstand heavy rain. The filmmakers also shot at an UNESCO conference in Paris and several world experts on cancers are shown speaking and the horrific statistics in the rise of this killer are graphically displayed. Male cancers in France have increased by 93% in the last 25 years. They all make the link with our environment and diet. And also point out that we now have the first generation in centuries for whom life-expectancy is lower than that of their parents. At the moment buying organic food is more expensive than conventionally produced food, and part of the reason for that are the huge subsidies that conventional agriculture receives. But I think that waiting for governments to react is useless and any change has to stem from a grassroots approach like that of Barjac. And realise that we might not like the changes that are necessary. With 55% of world crops grown to feed animals, we need to stop eating as much meat for a start. I imagine that the film could attract the comments that we in the developed west at least have sufficient to eat and should concentrate on helping those who are starving to death. OK, but personally speaking I have made a choice to bring children into this world and will not then feed them something that I know is so harmful. That is something immediately within my control. After this I will spend the week watching my daughter's 'Bagpuss ' DVD. Some light relief is needed. |

Thanks for the link XY765... "The UK, Ireland, Spain and Hungary oppose the deal, claiming that it will seriously affect agricultural production and increase food prices". So they are not arguing against the fact that the specified substances are toxic? So, to summarise their stance is : "We agree that these are very nasty things to be putting on food, but it does help the yield of crops". The food you will eating will be extremely bad for you, but there will be lots of it and it will be cheap. Vague recollections of a Woody Allen joke about two old ladies discussing a restaurant in the Catskills "Terrible food and such small portions" |

Andrew your summary of "We agree that these are very nasty things to be putting on food, but it does help the yield of crops" is just about spot on. Like the way pharmaceutical companies donate lots of drugs to 3rd world countries that are A. near their expiry date and B. not needed in the intended countires so that they don't have to pay for the disposal of the drugs (once expired they're classified as hazardous waste). |

Rob I take your point, but in 30 odd years of my life, I'm not sure we've had a total of 18 inches of snow....Most people say its the chemical works that prevent it, but I don't know. Oh, Liverpool won 2-0, which was nice. Might watch a little of the Superbowl tonight, but I think it start about 11.30pm, so anything after the 1st quarter and I'll be a zombie in work (that sounds like a plan doesn't it). Patti Smith: Dream of Life Wanted to be overwhelmed by it, but wasn't quite, though as I went along it began to seem that that was the point. "House of Cards" - a two hour documentary on CNBC over the weekend about the global financial crisis. A remarkably clear overview of root causes of the financial catastrophe we now find ourselves in. Scary but compelling viewing. By the end of it you get the sense that this thing is going to take years to unwind and we will probably never get back to where we were in terms of jobs or standard of living. The first genuine crisis of capitalism in our life time. Hope like hell things don't end as bad as some of the gloomier economists are predicting - i.e. food riots and tent cities across the US by 2012. Also read the following interesting opinion piece on the US recession by Gary Younge in the Guardian focussing on the impact of the crisis on middle Americans: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/ 2009/feb/16/american-recession-obama |

I rented W, Frozen River and Vicky Christina Barcelona. Melissa Leo was great in Frozen River, and certainly deserved her Oscar nomination for best actress. VCB was an okay movie at best, as I didn't care for the seemingly non-stop voice over. Nice performance by supporting actress Oscar winner Penelope Cruz, although she didn't show up until the movie was half over. |

BBC 4 tonight repeats, Do It Yourself - The Story Of Rough Trade. It was on last night and is well worth a watch for those in the UK. Peter - I thought Arsenal struggled, but you've got in the last 8 (which isn't until April) so a couple coming back from injury, a decent draw (Porto or Villareal) and its the last 4 - At that stage anything could happen. Liverpool have just beat United 4-1 at Old Trafford, which is probably the best result I can remember us geting. Still United's (or Chelsea's maybe). Cheers Jon |

Rachel Getting Married on DVD. Not one of Demme's best, but there were some decent acting performances including Anne Hathaway. There were a lot of stock Demme actors in minor roles, including Robyn Hitchcock. Nice eclectic music selection throughout the movie, ala Married To the Mob and Something Wild. |

Friday / Saturday I watched 2 brilliant programmes. Both about Rough Trade. One is a compilation of brilliant acts that have been on Rough Trade, starting from 1980 up to the present and the other is the story of Rough Trade. As with most music based docs I'd love it to go on for years, alas it was only 2.5 hours but totally engrossing. What's funny about the live acts, is their look and sound. the new generation(s), gawd bless em all, really haven't moved on much, in terms of fashion and style of music. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/categories/ music/ |

Found on the shelf at the library: The 'Alien' Quadrilogy. All four movies plus around 850 hours of extras, the latter of which I probably won't be getting to. Watched the Ridley Scott original last night. Been a long time. Gorgeous visuals (naturally), still pretty creepy, not particularly deep, but wasn't expecting it to be. |

Fargo is great, so too The Big Lebowski and agree Millers Crossing may be their finest hour. No Country for Old Men genius though and Cormac McCarthy is possibly the worlds finest living writer |

Criterion Collection 2006 release of Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows. This 1969 film depicts the Resistance of 1943, not heroically killing Germans, but struggling to stay alive without being dectected or betrayed. Many disturbing images inluding the opening sequence of German troops marching down the Champs-Elysees are mixed with subtle ones of everyday Resistance lives based on real fiqures. This haunting film is a must see and I bet it will continue to reveal hidden depths long after the typical explosion filled WWII films. 5 Stars!!!! |

Agreed, Michael, that's a great, great picture. Padraig, is that the one with Hugo Weaving as the kind of jerky blind guy? |

That's the one Allen. Great film. I went to see JCVD this afternoon. I liked it, though not as much as I'd hoped. If anyone is interested, I've written more about it at www.myspace.com/padraigcollins |

Had you seen it before, Padraig? It's not near the top of my favorite Michael Powell films, which still means I think it's great, great, great. |

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp is probably the next Powell/Pressburger that I'll get. Or maybe 49th Parallel, or maybe Black Narcissus, or maybe Peeping Tom. I Know Where I'm Going is a great film that I nhave that I've watched numerous times. I also have A Canterbury Tale and The Red Shoes. |

"I Know Where I'm Going" is my very favorite, Michael, and I'm a big fan of all the others you mention as well. Two that came out on DVD not long ago from that time period (WWII was their great theme and perhaps the best thing that ever happened to them artistically) are also very much worth your time if you haven't seen them: "The Small Back Room," and "A Matter of Life and Death," (compiled by Scorsese in a very nifty 2-disc set with Powell's very last film "Age of Consent") ,both of which feature the luminous (and recently departed) Kathleen Byron. |

Sad times Jon, remember it well. I saw a recent piece on tv where musicians had got together to records an anniversary song to commemorate the tragedy, the singer from Cast/bass from the La's was here and...Mick Head from Shack, with no effin teeth, I'd of thought the Oasis deal might have meant he could pay to get me fixed. |

"Rachel Getting Married" Despite some recovery-story/Screenwriting 101 cliches it's pretty affecting...definitely the most Jonathan Demme-ish Jonathan Demme movie in too long a while. Also, the excellent video for Lily Allen's "Not Fair," one of my favorite songs at the moment. Porter Wagoner! |

"Timecrimes" Recent Spanish time travel story. Fun, stylish, some good scares, not quite as deep as it thinks it is, but worth a rental for genre fans. "Green for Danger" Mid-40s British murder mystery set at a wartime hospital, with the great Alastair Sim as the quirky detective trying to pull things together. Quite delightful. On deck: "Caprica," the pilot film for the new Battlestar Galactica prequel series. Looks great (Eric Stoltz!)...the only downside is that the series itself won't be starting until next year. Sadistic bastards. |

Hope you enjoy it, cosmo. Though it's got some definite noir elements it isn't quite as bleak as, say, Odd Man Out. Perhaps a cross between that and The Fallen Idol. |

Burn After Reading Well acted, with some great laughs. However, it doesn't so much end as call time after an hour and a half, and while I think that the accusations of misanthropy that have been levelled at the Coens over the years are mostly unfounded, here they do come a fair bit closer to it. |

Just wondering if anyone in OZ or in GB caught a little gem of a show called 'Lead Balloon' on ABC. A half hour for me of sheer delight with the characters in particular the daughter and the 'housemaid'. The coffee shop scenes were priceless and the music was great, would love to get the soundtrack somehow. |

New Bertrand Tavernier film ‘In the Electric Mist’, which despite having been critically acclaimed at the last Berlin film festival went direct to DVD in the States apparently. In a cut-down version as well! It has been well received in France and was showing in the English language version at our local cinema (can’t abide watching dubbed films). Based on the book ‘In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead’ by James Lee Burke, it features an outstanding performance by Tommy Lee Jones and in fact the cast are all pretty wonderful (Levon Helm plays the ghost of a confederate general) . My partner thought that it resembled a film from another era of movie-making; a straight narrative (albeit quite complex) with no chronological leaps etc. I have never read the novel, but the film had that sense of ‘literary adaptation’; a sense of things moving a little too fast and some ends that didn’t quite tie up. But overall definitely worth seeing and a film that conveys that steamy atmosphere of the Louisiana swamps. Special mention for Mary Steenburgen, who confirms that some people just keep getting more beautiful the older they get. Perhaps I expected the European eye of the States (like in Louis Malle’s ‘Atlantic City’ ), but didn’t get that. Tavernier is an odd filmmaker in the sense that it is hard to really define his films and find common links; he jumps genre a lot… Just noticed in the credits that John Sayles has a small part as a filmmaker ! Anyone see his last film (Honeydripper) ? |

Mr Cohen Live in London on DVD. Straightforward version of the concert, impeccably played bunch of some of the greatest songs ever written, witty intros, while the Golden Voice just seems to get deeper and deeper, developing a fine bluesy rasp in some places. Musically quite similar to the Field Commander Cohen album, I think, with a couple of the same players. Perhaps almost TOO tasteful, really, it'd be refreshing if someone whanged in a bum note at least once. |

Andrew, I actually had to go over to IMDb to jog my memory as to the last John Sayles picture I'd seen...which turned out to be "Lone Star," more than a decade ago. He hasn't made that many more since that time, but still... And I hadn't even heard a thing about "Honeydripper," or if I did it flew out of my mind as fast as it flew in. As with music I'm not quite as up on every last release as I used to be. Agreed about Ms. Steenburgen. Stuart, I just got that Cohen DVD from the library, and am looking forward to it. |

Andrew, I rented a copy of ‘In the Electric Mist’ a couple of weeks ago and really liked it. Maybe a "Directers Cut" will be forth coming? I would like to see BT's 'Coup De Torchon' sometime. 'Round Midnight' is one of my all-time favorite movies. Allen, I think Sayles has slipped somewhat. You should check out 'Limbo', which I think was his last great film. 'Honeydripper' was a decent effort and better then anything after 'Limbo'. |

Charles, I love Lead Balloon. It's a bit of a rip-off of Curb Your Enthusiasm but, unlike any others I've ever seen, this is one copy almost worthy of the original. |

The new Wilco DVD "Ashes of American Flags". Captures the band in concert last year at various old venues around the US. A great DVD. Beautifully filmed and recorded and some truly really excellent performances. I highly recommend it. |

Michael, I love 'Round Midnight' too, although my eyes mist even at the thought of the scene where François Cluzet watches the Super8 films of Dexter Gordon with his daughter. Not seen 'Coup de Torchon'. Might have mentioned it before here, but Tavernier came to present 'Holy Lola' a few years ago at our local cinema and took questions afterwards. Came across as a wonderful man. I have a film journalist friend who once told me that Tavernier is always one of the last left in the bar at film festivals, not because he is a drinker, but because he loves talking so much and meeting people! Have you ever come across the film he made about his father in Lyon ? I saw it years ago on TV and it was excellent, although I don't remember the title. I would second the recommendation for John Sayles' 'Limbo'. A fine film and I still remember the collective groan in the cinema when the film finished. Situation in limbo for the characters in the film and for the audience too! |

Yeah Padraig. I saw it last night. Will probably never want to see it again on DVD but really liked it. I waited with a friend at the end just to see where it was shot, expecting Rome etc. The whole thing was done on America! Amazing!! |
