Spence, unfortunately, I haven't heard anything further about the Smiths remasters/reissues. The only piece of news I've still seen was from Stephen Street's December blog entry, about remastering the albums: http://www.stephenstreet.net/diary.asp?c hange=yes&m=12

An actual release date for these could still be a long ways off.

spence, the bob mould album is a slight return to form isnt it? being a massive husker du fan its great to hear him produce his best album since F.U.E.L. I think the breach is ok but not the strongest, the songs that bookend the album are great, and Spiralling Down is possibly better than anything on Copper Blue!!

Just had the Huskers on recently...brought up memories of seeing them in the mid-80s. Great show, tainted just very slightly by the friend/co-worker I went with, who was of the age where showing enthusiasm of the "uncool" sort was verboten. So while I had the urge to get down and fling myself around to the music he spent the entire show standing with arms folded, looking supremely bored.

Lake Brenda - Ass Ponys

I'm a latecomer to Wussy, but have fallen hard...so much so it's even sent me back to Chuck Cleaver's previous band, which I haven't listened to in years, and which sounds great too. Though not quite as great as what he's doing now.

Allen, through a complicated web of connections and coincidences, I booked Wussy to play my corner bar on May 30. I can't quite believe my good fortune. Given the great press the new CD is getting, I'm guessing (and hoping) this is the last time they'll have to play such as a small venue in Chicago. As a one-off, though, it's pretty exciting, and I'm expecting they may overwhelm our limited capacity pretty quick. If you're looking to get out of town, Chicago's lovely this time of year. And the show's free.

The Ass Ponys were pretty great, too. I still play "Some Stupid With a Flare Gun" a lot.

Wow, that's some web of connections and coincidences indeed...hearty congrats! Sounds like a heavenly venue to see them in, for free no less. Of course there's no way I could get it together that quickly to make my way there, so I guess I'll have to wait until they decide to make their way to this coast...

Great eh Cosmo!!!!

I remember thinking the same thing about Feist, the first time I ever heard her kev, it was on dual vocals on 2 really beautiful, beautiful tunes by Kings of Convenience called Know-how (freakin goosepimple time again), and The build up. She just comes in and applies this voice of an angel and the world is alright...

Josef k - an mp3 of a 1979 rehearsal Jeez its tiny, but great.

I'm avoiding listening to Wilco's new one till i get my hands on it which won't be until late June I suppose, It's gonna be hard. In the meantime I've been driving my partner mad by listening to loads of their old albums (apart from Sky Blue Sky) and live Jeff Tweedy solo gigs which are great.

Here's a free/donation Wilco-Woody Guthrie download, The Jolly Banker, pretty much bang on for these times.

Hmmm, I posted an album in "Song of the Day."

To make up for it:

Wussy: "Maglite." Garage rock in the best sense - grimy, chugging guitars, Lisa's vocal is stellar, and the lyrics cut.

I've Friended them over at MySpace and sent them an email with praise and pleading to please come out this way and play...Seattle seems a natural. If it's a (understandable) question of expense, I could talk to my boss about taking out a mortgage on the place...

And Rob, is that you over on Facebook? The one listed as Chicago IL, complete with thoughtful-looking photo?

Hm, that Rob has Lisa Walker listed as a friend, so it most likely is...sending you/them a friend invite.

Happiness Bleeds, Muscle Cars and Little Paper Birds get me. The "baby I love you" in the former is the disarmingly forthright culmination of everything every previous Wussy song has said.

"Muscle Cars" is my song of the moment. Just made and mailed off a best-of-Wussy disc to friend and kicked it off with that one. Agreed on "Happiness" thoughts...for whatever reason I also like the juxtaposition (and rhyme) of "a paper bag of mildewy porn" with "the neverending question, why were we born?"

I played the Wussy album at work in the last hour, first time I'd heard it. Wasnt able to fully concentrate on it cos I was actually doing some work for a change!! Thought it sounded ok, a bit derivative of Yo La Tengo if i was going for a lazy critique.

It's definitely more or less the same concept, i.e. adult-couple-with-Velvets-fixation, although I've never detected anything even vaguely southern-rock about Tengo.

And to state the obvious, though Chuck and Ira have a few vocal similarities, Lisa and Georgia sound very little like each other. Lyrically they cover a bit of the same ground, though from often very different perspectives.

Song o'the day: "Glad to Be Gay" - Tom Robinson on the DVD of the first Secret Policeman's Ball, strumming his acoustic, head thrust forward, delivering each line through clenched teeth.

Yep, that's my Facebook profile, Allen, although I'm an indifferent part of that community. The novelty of the concept wore off pretty quick.

I agree with the Wussy description - kinda Yo La, kinda Velvets, but lyrically distinct from either. If were to attempt a description of Chuck and Lisa's writing styles, I'd probably go with Midwestern bohemian. To me, they evoke an Ohio alt scene I remember very well from my years living there.

I'm quasi-indifferent over there, Rob...got coaxed into it by a family member. I have, however, run across a few chums and even my old high school drama teacher, all of whom it was nice to hear from again. So I'm not wholly averse.

Without a shadow of a fuc*in doubt, Bye Bye Pride live at london is the best version EVER, the intro reduces me to a particle!

After listening to the Wussy album 3 times now I dont think its for me. Its starting to grate, especially the guys mannered vocals. If I fancy listening to boy/girl vocals I think I will stick with the tried and trusted YLT, Low or Sonic Youth.

Fair enough, Kev. I'd recommend giving them a spin a week from now, or a month, if you're game. If you have access to them, listen to the first two records, as well. I really believe this is a band that might grow on you. But maybe give it some space.

Modern songwriting rarely gets better than something like "Jonah" or "Rigor Mortis" on album 2, and classic songwriting rarely gets better than something like "Airborne" or "Humanbrained Horse" on album 1.

Skulldisco,
I checked out the Low Anthem MySpace site and that song was on it. I see what you mean - the album, by the sound of it will be this year's Fleet Foxes. Trouble is, I can't even get a listing for the band, let alone the album, here in Auz!
I will have to wait an extra 3 months before the tyrrany of distance is yet again overcome - even here in the 21st century!

Geoff, do what I did and order it from Rough Trade. They have self numbered, hand made copies of the CD on (i think)the bands own label. The CD is about to be relaunched on Bella Union Records in Europe and Nonesuch records in the US.
I have ordered records from Aus that arrive in just under 2 weeks, I am sure the same would apply in the opposite direction.

The Affectionate Punch - The Associates.
The first few notes of this song were playing in the car stereo when I pulled up at a roundabout, glanced to the right and saw a van with the name B. McKenzie emblazoned on it - there always was something quite spiritual, mystical and otherworldly about the bold Billy!!

That's a great Lee song Jeff, have you heard 'Sometime Later' by Alpha? It's a great song from their 1996 debut 'Come from Heaven' and uses a part of My Autumn's to stunning effect
