The Triple J list has got me thinking. We might have done this before, but, if push came to shove, would be your all time favourite top 5 songs. Mine is as expected.... Turn! Turn! Turn! - The Byrds 1000 Miles - Ride Rain - The Beatles Instant Karma! - John Lennon Across the Universe (Anthology 2 version) - The Beatles |

Wow, that's a tough one. These are subject to change daily. Even hourly. Twin Layers of Lightning - Go-Betweens Ceremony - New Order Femme Fatale - VU Gardening at Night - REM That's Not Me - Beach Boys |

Oops. The Zimmy song was meant to be "Summer Days". I must've been ruminating on that goddess of Antipodean song, Olivia Newton J. Oh, wella wella.... |

In no particular order, Little America - REM Black A Kill Black - Gregory Isaacs Boys of The Old Brigade - The Wolfe Tones Body Of An American - The Pogues Thirteen - Big Star. Surely this should be a Top 20 or 30 even? |

as kevin mentioned big star i would drop from my list joy division and insert big star's thirteen, too. this is one of the songs i sing and whistle many times a week. the same with at last i am free. strange, that both songs weren't on my mind immediately. if we play this game much longer, my list will be better and better. |

With the usual proviso that this can change daily. It would be a different top five tomorrow, or the next day… You've Never Lived - Go-Betweens Ne Me Quitte Pas - Jacques Brel (best English language version is EmilĂana Torrini's) Don't Be Memory - The Chills People Say - The Go-Betweens Lather - Jefferson Airplane |

jeff, your songs 2-4 are three of my favourites too. though, if it's not too blasphemous, i'll take big star's femme fatale cover. anyway, speaking of which: ride - leave them all behind go-bs - bachelor kisses this mortal coil/big star (don't make me pick) - kangaroo george michael - a different corner laura branigan - self control |

Good idea Geoff! Five songs (ask me tomorrow and it will be a different five; it could be 50) whose opening chords instantly send a shiver down my spine are: The Go-Betweens - Streets Of Your Town The Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is A Season) Big Star - September Gurls The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations The Pursuit Of Happiness - She's So Young Just to check on the spine tingling, I've just played the intro to all these songs on iTunes! Spine was tingled! |

speaking of intros, i just love the way love will tear us apart has a really awkward, almost amateurish, clunky intro just before those drums crash in, and well then you know whats coming next - an almost perfect song lyrically, vocally and musically. |

When Geoff put up this thread I just went "yeah, right!" It wasn't a meaningful idea for me. But this morning I've thought of an old practice of mine. When I move into a new place, one of the first things I do is set up the stereo. That comes before setting up the bed. The only thing that precedes it is putting things in the fridge. And my old-tech separate components system takes some real time to put back together and is installed in a heavy wooden cabinet built by my brother so it's a definite demonstration of my priorities. Then I play "comfort music" to psychically mark my territory and blow out whatever awful things took place before I arrived. Loud. So, for my five songs I'll choose typical things I would play for that occasion. Pay You Back with Interest--Hollies Rock 'n Roll Friend--GoBees Pressure Drop--Toots & the Maytals Bury Me Deep in Love--Triffids People in Love--Lulu And outside of the top 5 exercise I'd undoubtedly play something of my own, probably "Martha Ellis." |

wouldnt it be easier to do a top 5 albums? obviously that could also change depending on mood, but i dont think nearly as frequently. i could have posted 5 different songs every day since this thread started. |

Interesting how you said you mark out your territory Randy. I sort of did the same thing when I bought my house. Before any of the furniture was in, I walked into every room with my Rick playing Turn!Turn!Turn! and Tambourine Man. Now Jeff, I must chide you - it's alltime, only have 5 songs to play at your funeral, songs that sum you up or describe you well to anyone whose known you! |

Did you carry a little amp on your back when you did that, Geoff? I remember some dude playing Hendrix licks while on roller skates at Venice Beach back in the late 70s. He had a battery-powered amp on his back. I wonder if he's still doing that. I have to stick up for Jeff. The five songs DO change from day to day, even if they remain songs that have rattled around in your head forever. There are a lot of those. And you've changed the purpose. Five songs at a funeral are a completely different thing. |

Geoff - that is literally impossible! If I had to choose five songs *right now* that sum me up or describe me well to anyone, that list would look different if you were to have asked me two days ago. And it would look different again if you were to ask me tomorrow! The funeral thing would require its own thread, as I would probably have a different set of songs given the nature of the occasion. |

Randy, I saw that guy on Venice Beach in 1989. It was a thrill for me because I'd seen him in Fletch! I've seen him in movies made since then too so I bet he's still there. His name is Harry Perry (I googled "Venice Beach roller skate guitar guy" to find that out!) |

Nah, no amp, just the soft jangle of a 360/12 ingraining itself into the woodwork like some fine insence! Maybe we should do funeral songs..... I have been with a black dog at times and thought VERY seriously about that. |
