Nice little piece in The New York Times about Cattle And Cane. http://papercuts.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/ 06/24/living-with-music-peter-terzian/ It gets it wrong about the train. Grant only got that train when taking the very long journey home from boarding school, not every day as the piece says. |

And Darlinghurst Nights was on the same list. And a good Pretenders' song. I may have to explore Mr. Terzian's entries I haven't heard such as Emmy the Great and Fountains of Wayne (who have a great name anyway so I should have checked them out long ago). |

I wouldn't waste your time with Fountains of Wayne, as I think they're pretty generic, but that's just me. |

I thought they were pretty cookie-cutter alt-pop for awhile, but further listening uncovered quite a few goodies and a sound of their own. I admit that I don't have a compulsion to play them that often, though, like I do other favorites of the type. |

A Sufjan Stevens entry on the list, too. I know he makes some folks twee-ometers hit the red, but I've come to like his stuff a whole lot. |

I hadn't spotted that Darlinghurst Nights was there too! Thanks Randy. |

Jeff, I will generally heed your warning. Reinforced by Allen's comment, I'll give them a pass. I do like the description of the song though. I have that Sufjan Stevens CD. I remember it having a handful of stupendously great songs and a huge amount of flashy, time-wasting arrangements in between. Among the great songs, the one about John Wayne Gacey stuck in my mind, I suppose because of the scary subject. It's a great thing that Terzian gave the Go-Bees two slots in his list. |

I quite like all the arrangements, and the pop-Philip-Glassish stuff, but if you should ever find yourself in the market for a good one without all that, you might look up "Seven Swans." |

Sufjan seems to have stalled on releasing anymore state themed albums after Michigan and Illinois. I've got both of those plus "Seven Swans", but I haven't listened to any of them in a couple of years. |

I arrived a bit late to Sufjan...the hype around the time of Illinois was a bit too big (not his fault, of course). I'm glad I waited, as I think it helped my appreciation. And not only has he stalled on state-themed albums he seems to have stalled on albums, period for the moment. There were his bits on "Dark Was the Night" but nothing else has crossed my radar. Hope he's getting a goodun ready. |
