partly inspired by jeffs thread on the smiths reissues, and partly by me getting my record deck fixed, lets see who amongst us can be bothered spinning the old platters. after a visit to the cupboard which hoards my old records i found some right curios. felt - let the snakes crinkle their heads, on creation records. dreadful, i never even liked felt - why do i have this? the distractions - nobodys perfect. power pop trio from manchester, circa 1981. bought this on the strength of their debut single on factory which i loved. josef k - young and stupid, on supreme international records. a less comprehensive compilation than the more recent entymology. luxuria - unanswerable lust, on beggars banquet. oh dear, took it off after 2 songs gang of four. songs of the free. their weakest album, surprisingly not crap. new order - power corruption and lies. on factory, complete with shiny peter saville designed sleeve. and some reggae, lee perry blackboard - jungle dub the techniques - in dub gregory isaacs - the cool ruler |

That's great you got your turntable fixed, Kev. Vinyl is fun. Total agreement on that Luxuria album - not so good. But Gang of Four - you don't think "Hard" is their weakest album? I do... But then I've never even heard "Mall." I think "Songs of the Free" is pretty good. Slick but good. Since most of what I listen to is on vinyl anyhow, this is like the "What Are People Listening To" thread for me. This week: The Passage - Pindrop Psychedelic Furs - Talk Talk Talk Scars - Author! Author! Eyeless in Gaza – Kodak Ghosts Run Amok |

some of my absolute favourite records i still insist on listening to on lp of a saturday afternoon or sunday morning (always seems to be one of those two)... all of the go-bs, reckoning, parade, tusk!, strangeways... like the feeling i get from japanese food, seems like it's good for the soul. |

I've never stopped listening to vinyl though I did have a lull in buying new material for years, just stuck with second hand reords. All my old collection - Beatles, Young, Dylan etc and all the records I bought up to the early 90s were vinyl - Wedding Present, Smiths, Jesus And Mary Chain, Lloyd Cole etc. In the last few years I've started to buy vinyl of bands I currently like so I have the whole catalogue of Spoon, Wilco and The Silver Jews on vinyl. Yesterday I received the new Spoon single on 7", it has three tracks. And I'm waiting on the new Spectrum EP to be delivered. Spectrum usually make a big deal of their vinyl, this record is printed on translucent red and green vinyl with a copy of the EP on CD and also a download code for the mp3s. Nothing beats playing vinyl though these days with albums so long they're usually double albums which means you have to change sides every three or four songs which is a a pain. And the needle on my ProJect turntable doesn't go back to it's resting place so I have to manually take the needle off the record at the end of each side. Worth it though. |

I played more of the Yes triple live album Yessongs last night. I love that my vinyl version, which is more than 30 years old (it was given to me by an older friend when I was a kid) still sounds great. |

XY765 - use a very, very soft, clean cotton cloth or t-shirt with some lukewarm water. If that doesn't work, try dabbing said soft cotton cloth in lighter fluid. You can also buy special vinyl cleaner fluid from some audiophile shops, but it's usually just a mix of water and alcohol. Some people swear by rubbing alcohol, while others maintain it can harm vinyl (although there's no hard proof of this). Always wipe the vinyl with the grooves, not across them. Finger prints can be harder than one might think to remove. |

Back in the ancient days when I had to do such things I just used water and t-shirts (or other really soft cotton items). Sometimes I used the cotton without any water. I would not recommend any solvents such as alcohol. It's not likely but it might etch the vinyl surface, so why run the risk? And like Jeff says, always wipe WITH the grooves. One thing I tried back in my old vinyl days was simply washing the whole record at the sink like a dish, with a soft cotton cloth of course and also obviously making sure not to let the playing surface touch the sink itself. It would come out looking like new but the playing surface was noisy, I think from hard water deposits left in the grooves. That's the hazard with water. If you use water limit it to the specific spot you need to clean. |

Thanks guys. I've read of some methods using a 1:1 mixture of water and isopropyl alcohol but I'm a bit reluctant to use that. I can easily get the alcohol or other stronger solvents but it's always best to start with the weakest strength so I'll try the wet t-shirt (!!) method. I'll use de-ionised water to avoid the hard/soft water issue. Thanks again, I'll let ye know how I get on.. |

I tried cleaning that record tonight and it worked really well. I used a 25% solution of isopropyl alcohol in deionised water. Just over the greasy area. It even cleared up a couple of skips I heard the last time. Very happy, thanks for the help guys. |
