jeff, there was a song released on this very small independent label called tim, in '87 by moodists, red carpet out of town or summit, it was great but the b side, jack o diamonds was freakin unbelievably briliant ( i nicked the riff for my biff bang pow/josef k inspired first band - steamtown - i was 18!), they also had a 12 ep out later on the label too, with a great sleeve. dave mclymont and malcolm ross were members at this time, it was all sounding too good!

I keep looking for another Moodists CD beside the excellent Two Fisted Art because Spence keeps referring to these deep-in-the-80s things they did which I'd like to hear. "Frankie's Negative" is brilliant. I never would have guessed you'd like that one Jeff. Which just goes to show that you'll remain a bit of an enigma for me! I assume the Moodists were accused of ripping off Birthday Party but I like the Moodists better.

Sure listen to Wilco's Summmerteeth Kev, there's enough Beatles nods in there...or Hummingbird from A Ghost Is Born.

Hate It Here from SBS is very Abbey Road era Beatles but that one wouldn't make yer Wilco 5 year Best Of double A-Side would it heh heh?

Too Blue - Johnny Marr. Featuring Jeff Tweedy, Ed O'Brien, Glenn Kotche etc. From the album 'The Sun Came Out', the new Neil Finn 'Seven Worlds Collide' project. Bit of a Phil Spectorish production on this catchy pop gem.

Haven't heard that one Mark. Did Marr write the lyrics and Tweedy the tune? I haven't really investigated that project because of the Neil Finn/Crowded House input. Maybe I'm being a bit unfair but CH do nothing for me.

What's the version of You Never Know on that record like, compared to the album version?

Tweedy wrote the lyrics and Marr wrote the tune and sings. It's the best Marr vocal performance I've heard.

The version of You Never Know sounds almost identical to the version on the Wilco album - complete with the Nels Cline 'My Sweet Lord' slide guitar lick (which is weird because Nels wasn't in NZ for the project so I assume it was overdubbed later). Only difference I can detect is some additonal keyboards and backing vocals.

There's also a Tweedy song called 'What Could Have Been' which wouldn't have been out of place on the new Wilco album. The other Wilco guys involved with the project (Kotch, Sansone and Stiratt) also contribute a song each.

As you can imagine the album is a bit of a smorgasbord - but overall song quality is strong.

I think my favourites are Bodisattva Blues by Ed O'Brian and Duxton Blues by Glen Richards from Augie March.

Thanks for the info Mark. Yeah those four recorded the basics of Wilco The Album in NZ and then Cline overdubbed back in the studio.

Thanks for the info Mark!!!!!
I've been scanning the Crowdies website on and off these last months thinking that SOMETHING must be coming out soon. Sounds like Neil is up to his usual standard from the snippets on the MySpace site....interpret that as you will (Kevin!!!).
But have you actually GOT the album in your hot sweaty hands Mark?
If so, HOW???????????????????????????????
Do you work in the industry?

Hope Sandoval & the New Inventions the album 'Bavarian Fruit Bread' has to be one the most beautiful Sunday Afternoons, just having.

Space, beauty, angelic haunting vocals with journey lyrics and licks sweet and thought triggering.

Great to to see The Jesus & Mary Train referenced again Stoned and Dethroned is outstanding, meaningful, joyous and gloomy.

I'm awaiting a friend in Darwin's review of RF last night 22 Aug, if anyone knows already..

The wrestler - Broooooooooooos

The first Springsteen song I've listened to all the way through for years, as it slips sadly in at the end credits of the film, and rather lovely it is too.
My favourite review quote for the movie itself meanwhile came from the TLS: "I just have two words for you Mr Rourke: re... deemed!"

World Shut Your Mouth - Julian Cope.

Just watching BBC3 or 4 with its celebration of Island Records. And there it was - happy memories of seeing him at the Bristol Bierkeller; a more leftfield memory of meeting an attractive girl at a party in Leeds who knew the guitarist (Donald Ross Skinner), and then getting thrown out because of the drunken antics of my friend, who then got knocked over by a car on the way home by a hit-and-run driver.

Happy days - sort of! My friend was okay - well, after a few days in hospital anyway. But no permanent effects apart from scarring.

And also I'm in Love With a German Filmstar - the Passions.

Bit of an 80s vibe for me tonight...
