padraig, is that version of thirteen from the newly released box set?

ive ordered the first 2 albums which have just been remastered and reissued, never actually noticed if there were any add ons. it always annoyed me that no1 record and radio city were on a twofer - albums as classic as these two should be separate. unless youre a skint student of course, where its incredible value for money!!

I was definitely grateful for that twofer way back when - it was the second CD I ever bought, and they were quite expensive back then. I wasn't quite a skint student, but close. And even though I have a little bit more money now I've got nothing against twofers, if they don't crowd out good add-ons...I still love all of my Beach Boys ones.

It is Kevin.

I have a two disc set of their three albums which I got in Red Eye records in Sydney in 1992. It has the first two albums on the first disc and the third on disc 2. I have never seen that package anywhere else, even on a Google search. I'm pretty sure it's legit. It certainly has sleevenotes. It was bloody expensive at the time, but I was always glad to have been able to get their three albums in one fell swoop.

I don't agree with your anti-twofer stance Kevin (but I'll defend to the death your right to hold that opinion!).

I love the twofer. My very CD was a Smokey Robinson double - "Going to a Go-Go" and "Tears of a Clown." Those old Motown two-CD sets were a bargain, and a lot of times they bundled classic records together as opposed to pairing a great record with a so-so one. But it's true that, back when I bought it, the Big Star twofer was a small fortune (I think it was an import).

"Something Good" by Sarah Blasko.

Eat your heart out Julie Andrews ! A song from 'The Sound of Music', covered on the bonus disc that comes with the excellent "As Day Follows Night".

Malcolm ROss n The Low Miffs - Josephine.

live on BBC Radio Scotland, the middle 8 was pure Josef K at there very very best, a bit like the end of Adoration which was the last song they played at their final few gigs in '81.

Song of the day: Genius Next Door - Regina Spektor

Some other great twofers:

The dB's - Stands for deciBels/Repercussion

Millie Jackson - Caught Up/Still Caught Up

Willie Nelson - In the Jailhouse Now (with Webb Pierce)/Brand on My Heart (with Hank Snow)

Yo La Tengo - President Yo La Tengo/New Wave Hot Dogs (That second album is far from their best, but it's good, and nice to have)

Chic - Real People/Tongue in Chic

Nils Lofgren & Grin - 1+1/All Out

Flying Burrito Brothers - Gilded Palace of Sin/Burrito Deluxe

B-52's - Party Mix/Mesopotamia

I saw the B-52's during the Mesopotamia tour in 1982. Some folks knocked the ep, but I though it was okay. It never came close to the greatness of Chronic Town or even the Let's Active ep Afoot.

I have the dBs and Burritos that Alan mentions.

I finally got the 2 Big Star albums yesterday. Its probably just me but I thought it was great having them individually on separate discs rather than a twofer. The sound is much better, although there is still no real "bottom end" to the songs which would have been the biggest improvement for me. O My Soul is still in mono, as is the single edit of it which is the bonus track. Nice sleeve notes from Kris Needs (writer for zigzag magazine, mojo etc) who appears to have been an early champion of the band in the 70s.

Kevin, I'm totally with you on the value of having individual albums packaged as such. First, the problem of listener fatigue has been acknowledged by others on here before. Long ago I adopted the practice of simply listening to one or the other of the albums on the twofer and leaving it at that. (I tended to favor Radio City.) And, second, the Big Star albums were exotic beasts never seen by most of us. Since you report them having better sound I'll plop down for copies for myself. I've been avoiding buying a lot of these reissues (including the Magazine ones) because they just seem to be a scam. Btw, if you've decided that the Magazine reissues have better sound than the originals, let me know. It's my recollection that you weren't too sure that they did. Some reissues, like "Tallulah" and the Triffids' "Treeless Plain" and "In the Pines" have been enormously improved.

Randy, not played Magazine reissues for a few months. They were better but not night and day.
On the subject of reissues, this month's purchases have made me realise that I'm a record companies dream. Off the top of my head - the 2nd,3rd and 4th Neil Young albums recently remastered by Rhino, the first two Feelies albums remastered, the first two Big Star albums remastered, and 5 remastered Kraftwerk albums from Autobahn through to Computer World. I have a nagging feeling there are even more than that, but I'm at work and cant check. What a saddoe!!

I say I'm a record companys dream because I already have these albums on CD, and in most cases have the original on vinyl.

I'm about half-and-half as far as listening to twofers - sometimes just one album or the other, sometimes (especially if I'm bingeing on a particular artist) straight through. Those Beach Boys ones work very much like that for me...like a seemingly boundless flow of great stuff.

Hey Manhattan is one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite bands Joe. I sang it out loud when I crossed the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time (the one in NY, not the one in the NSW Central Coast).

actually spence, reading back my comment it didnt come across that well and was overly harsh. the performance wasnt weak, it was actually quite good and like you say had a good groove. what i should have said was "good song, well played but wait till you hear the single!"

I didnt watch that far through the Jools show but am definitely a fan of Mr Banhart. You are right Kev with the Bolan comparison, alot of similarities and the early stuff is very Tyrannosaurus Rex. Now That I Know from Cripple Creek is a song of exquisite beauty and manages to nail the Nick Drake vibe much better than a host of other imitator's attempts

Amoureuse - Veronique Sanson

Discussing "beautiful songs" with the wife, I started humming this Kiki Dee hit..."But that's Italian!" she objected. Actually, it turned out to be French; but pretty beautiful in any language. And she married Stephen Stills, apparently.

Fuck Buttons - Olympians

A great driving tune that along with The Field's "Leave It" on a comp cd I made almost had me at work by the time that they'd finished. Should really have stuck Deep Purple's "Child in Time" as track 3 to get me there!
