Just back from seeing Weyes Blood at the Sydney festival. Natalie Mering used a pick up Australian band, which included Tim Rogers (aka Jack Ladder) on bass. It was a terrific show. My daughter loved it. Mering is funny as well as having a wonderful voice and writing great songs. At times it was like Joni Mitchell fronting Peter Gabriel-era Genesis as their wildest. I know that sounds like it should be abominable, but it was great. Randy, she's from Santa Monica, so I imagine she plays in LA a lot. Check her out if you haven't already done so. | ||

I saw two gigs today. First was Halfway in the Spiegeltent in Hyde Park. It was a great show. There were eight, sometimes nine, people on stage. It made me think this is what the 21st century Go-Betweens might have sounded like if they spent more time calling from a country phone. John Willsteed is Halfway's bass player. I would love to see Robert record an album, or even an EP, with Halfway as his band. After that I went to the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour to see PJ Harvey. Also a great show. She had a nine-piece band, which included Mick Harvey, and James Johnston and Terry Edwards of Galllon Drunk. Polly played saxophone on several songs, but did not play guitar at any point. Most of the set was from her last two albums, with very little of her earliest material. I wonder if she ever plays Sheela-Na-Gig any more? 50ft Queenie was one of the highlights. | ||

Just saw the Bats. Brilliant show. Hopefully they play somewhere near you soon. The highlights for me were Boogey Man, Smoking Her Wings and North By North. They had violin and cello on about half the songs, which was great. | ||

Hugh, it was Mikey Summerfield on violin and John Chrisstoffels on cello. They both play on the new album too, though the former is listed as playing viola, rather than violin, on the album. They are both also New Zealanders. | ||

Hey Padraig, I was at the Bats gig too and loved it. From where I was standing the sound mix was terrific. The strings added some very nice textures. Was impressed by the songs from the new album (Deep Cut) and look forward to getting a copy soon (they were selling copies outside the venue but didn't have any cash on me!). | ||

Caught Divine Comedy last night in Bordeaux. Think it was the last night of the tour. Great show, but my partner had to wait until the very last song to hear her favourite "Tonight We Fly". She was getting worried... Really enjoyed Lisa O'Neill in support too. Someone who is capable of inhabiting a song and making it really come alive. | ||

The XX in Duesseldorf @ the Mitsubishi Electric Hall What a wonderful evening!!! One of the best concerts of my whole life - and I have been to a lot... The place is for almost 5.500 people but it is like being at a club concert. The acoustic is astonishing! And the band was so happy and played in best form for almost 80 minutes. Thanks for the XX report Andreas. Hope I'll see them one day.. Saw Teenage Fanclub in Lüxor, worst concert club if you're not in the first three rows... I lost myself in Cologne, so was a bit late. I managed to reach a nearly decent place behind a two meters guy... Otherwise the concert was very good. They played all my favorites and the songs of the last album sounded better live. First time I saw them. The german band who opened the show wasn't bad at all too. I've added Real Estate in Bxl and Spoon in Cologne (Gloria!) to my list. | ||

I saw The Necks last night in concert at Constellation, Chicago. I know there are some fans of the band and of jazz/improv on this board. They played two 45-minute sets of their unique hypnotic music. It is interesting that the pianist Chris Abrahams was a member of the Laughing Clowns for about a year. Now that is a band I would have loved to have seen play live back in the day. | ||

Trou - did Teenage Fanclub play "Easy Come, Easy Go"? They encored their Dublin show with a gorgeous version of it a few months ago. Fred, I've seen The Necks live a couple of times and they are pretty mesmerising - Chis Abrahams also features on a great album from last year by The Still: http://bronzerat.com/news/the-still-new- album-released-today/ Saw two great shows this week, the hugely talented Julia Jacklin with her band at Whelans, Dublin the songs from her solo debut sounded even better live. Pity her tour van was clamped outside afterwards - Don't Let The Clampers Get You Win. Also saw the Drive By Truckers for the first time in a over a decade when Jason Isbell was still a member. Loud, visceral and hard working they cranked out 24 songs barely pausing for breath playing a set that spanned from the brilliant "American Band" right back to their first album. | ||

I saw Teenage Fanclub at Sydney zoo on Friday night. They were great. It was all very civilised, which people sitting on picnic blankets, eating good food and drinking decent wine from pre-booked hampers. It was beside the elephant enclosure, but I noticed the elephants had been moved, or at least locked inside. Maybe they're not TFC fans. They played everything I wanted them to play, including a cover of Easy Come, Easy Go. One of our group pointed out how like Buddy Holly they sound. I'd never noticed before, but she was right. The support was Goon Sax and young Mr Forster did his dad proud. One of our group pointed out they sound a bit like The Wedding Present. I'd never noticed before, but he was right. | ||

Peter, I saw the mighty Drive By Truckers a few weeks back. The show they did in Detroit was also long and a great career retrospective. As usual with DBT shows, some of the band members had difficulty standing upright by the end of the gig. They did pause when I saw them to yell at two guys who broke out into a fist fight near where I was standing. Also saw The Head and The Heart last week. Their show was really good, and the new album is strong. They did see a bit tour weary , but didn't get the name of the town wrong like they did the previous night. (They didn't make any friends in Grand Rapids with that screw up, I'm sure.) I was especially excited to see the opening band, Whitney, due to all the positive words I'd been reading hear and elsewhere. They lived up to the hype! Also saw Lake Street Dive last week. The less said about that show the better. Not my thing. | ||

Was lucky to see the final night of Teenage Fanclub's North American tour at Warsaw in Brooklyn. Lots of indie rockers in the house, including Georgia from Yo La Tengo and a couple of the Nada Surf boys. I was so happy that they played "Easy Come, Easy Go," which I knew was being played this tour (due to it being a b-side of their single). I hadn't managed to see it performed live during the few times I had seen Fanclub over the past few months. Gerry did a fine job singing the song and Raymond's guitar work was fabulous. Felt like ol' G.W. was in the house for a few minutes...... | ||

They were indeed really loud - luckily the venue provides free earplugs, which I wore the whole time apart from their opening acoustic set and the song intros. I'm 54 and my hearing is still very good, probably because I've used ear protection at gigs for the last decade or more, and I never went to that many really loud gigs. Loudest I ever witnessed were Spanish heavy metal band Baron Rojo supporting Hawkwind in the 80s. I think I spent their set in the bar! | ||

I saw Real Estate for the second time in two years yesterday. A fine concert, with some terrific moments, even if I must say that the sound wasn't so good (especially the voices hadn't the treatment they deserve). With this technical problem and their kind of repertoire it was sometimes difficult to distinct one song from another. But, as it was a pleasant song... Missed the Bats in Cologne. Next are Spoon, Sparks, Grizzly Bear, Robert Forster and again Spoon. | ||

Trou, I am sorry to hear you missed The Bats. I saw them in Glasgow on Thursday night and they were fabulous. A very poor turnout ( only 60 / 70 people ) but the band played a nineteen song set lasting about 90 minutes. Managed to acquire Paul's set list at the end of the show and Robert kindly scribbled the encores on it as well as signing it. | ||

A rather special evening last Saturday. With some friends we had put up some money to help out our friend the jazz pianist Yonathan Avishai with his last CD. Our recompense was a private concert, so we invited around 80 people, ate and drank together and then had the music. A large part of what he plays is improvised so each performance is unique. At the end of the evening as we were clearing up, a friend asked if she could sing “Summertime” with him. Beautiful rendition and it was followed by “La Vie en Rose”. As it was my birthday I got a request and Yonathan played the haunting piece (“Life and Death - Epilogue”) that concludes his friend Avishai Cohen’s ECM release from last year. It was by far the most expensive concert ticket I bought up to then, and I genuinely thought now matter how long I lived I would never spend so much again to see a gig. Today, I spent $250 to buy a ticket to see Paul McCartney in December. He'd better play some Wings songs. Just saying. | ||

The sound @ the concert of SLF was not very good during their concert but much better on TV ater on.. ...and seeing SLF later on TV was amazing, too. This was a wonderful start for my life on concerts | ||

King Creosote (solo acoustic) in Bordeaux Kenny doesn't seem to be a happy man. To start with it must be difficult to summon up much enthusiasm to play in front of about 18 people *. And from his between song banter I gather his long-term relationship must have ended ? We got a very heart-felt "Nothing Compares to You".."does anyone here remember Sinead O'Connor ?" before taking off his wooly bunnet to reveal his newly shorn head. "My favourite song of all time". And some real tears ? Even his beautiful voice sounded a bit shot. Though the last song ("A Scottish drinking song") was a version of Hamish Imlach's "Cod Liver Oil and The Orange Juice" was quite wonderful. * A great shame when I think that he is partly responsible for one of my favourite recordings of the last 10 years "Diamond Mine" (with Jon Hopkins). And his lovely collection of songs for the "From Scotland with Love" film. | ||

Tomorrow evening Manu Chao in the Centre Culturel of Sarlat. Usually he plays stadiums in France in front of tens of thousands so this should be special. He is playing a comparatively tiny venue (that takes 800 ?) as a thanks to the town that welcomed his grandmother and mother when they escaped from Spain at the end of the civil war. Wonder he makes of the situation in Catalonia at the moment ! Who know what will happen on Sunday when the population try to vote in a referendum that has been declared illegal by the state... | ||

Just saw Alex Lahey do an in store at Red Eye. I missed maybe the first three songs as she started at 5 and that's when I finished work. Given that most people finish work at 5 (though I usually don't), the only way to get to the record store at 5 is if you worked there. Well, I guess she has a studenty following, so the start time was probably fine. But I digress, she was very good. It's almost exactly a year since I saw another young Australian woman, Julia Jacklin, doing an in store in the same shop. But while Jacklin approaches indie from the folk side of things, Lahey is coming from the power pop side. Both are very talented songwriters. | ||

La Femme, at the Regent Theater in downtown Los Angeles. I purchased their second album "Mystere" on one of my visits to Rough Trade in London. They are a psychedelic dance type outfit. I have since got the first album "Psycho Tropical Berlin." If you cull, about one-half their material is quite entertaining. They are gratifyingly French in sensibility. First surprise seeing them live: they use a real drummer and no loops. There are six members: three keyboardists, one drummer, bassist and guitarist. Two women, including the bassist. I found myself admiring their old fashioned musicianship to create their dance club music sound. They are very much music for the kids which unfortunately meant that forgetting to bring earplugs was a serious problem. (They were much louder than PJ Harvey is nowadays). They were gloriously trashy in the way Bashung was in his early period with silly outfits and "sexy" moves by their main frontman who sports what comes very close to being a mullet on his head. The mid-sized venue (approx 500 capacity) was sold out and the crowd was enthusiastic. La Femme turn out to be a thing in the US, which I find refreshing because their lyrics are generally in French. Maybe there is hope in the US after all in the age of Trump. | ||

Saw Grizzly Bear in Bruxelles, for the second time. I liked it, but probably I was in a happy mood with all that sun over the town. There were mixed opinions around me. Sometimes with GB you're feeling like at a Pink Floyd concert.. I think it's a band to listen quietly at home. Next, Spoon (again...) and Wolf Parade. | ||

I saw Son Volt last night. First time they have ever been to Australia and, given there were about 200 people in a venue that holds 1000, probably the last. A great rock show, with most songs at around the three minute mark. | ||

Interesting report Padraig. Jay Farrar has done some great things. His solo album Sebastapol is excellent. Shame about the turnout. And, yeah, I like it when the songs come in and do their thing and then leave without unnecessary lingering. Three minutes is great. | ||

Saw a band called the Courtneys last Sunday. An all-female three-piece, apparently they're the first non-NZ act ever signed to Flying Nun. The band's putatively from British Columbia, but in fact the members are scattered now so that's more of a reference point. Anyhow, the Flying Nun affiliation is handy; they do have a certain NZ sound if you listen for it, as well as a strong late 80s, early 90s North American indie influence. Anyhow, they were were a ragged blast live and if this is your kinda thing, you'll know who you are quickly. You probably own records by the Verlaines and Scrawl and treasure them equally. Saw Pere Ubu touring on their terrific new album, "20 Years in a Montana Missile Silo." The record's been getting some good press so the show was sold out, which might have accounted for David Thomas' high spirits - he was almost chatty in between tunes and swigs from a bottle of wine he complimented as tasting "like sesame seeds." They played a lot off the new release, natch, but also a fair amount of late 80s/early 90s stuff, which seemed to fit well with the newer stuff, and they threw in "Final Solution" toward the end 'cause you kinda have to. It's interesting: no one in the band (except Thomas) is original to Ubu, but I've seen some of these guys in the band now for 20 years. They tore it up pretty good on Saturday. | ||
