Tin Angel is such a great song. Dylan's use of "get up, stand up" in the lyrics is, presumably, a tribute to Bob Marley?

"Mojave 3 - Big Star Baby
The Jayhawks - Big Star
Big Star - September Gurls"

Padraig - You could also add Alex Chilton by The Replacements, December by Teenage Fanclub from Bandwagonesque, or even anything of Thirteen which was of course the follow up to Bandwagonesque.
Talking of Bandwagonesque, I love this from Wikipedia. The liner notes to the 2009 Big Star Box set Keep an Eye on the Sky say "...Bandwagonesque was so in thrall to Chilton, Bell, and company that some critics had taken to calling it "Big Star's 4th."

Kevin, I remember the Melody Maker review of Bandwagonesque really annoyed me because it wrote about Big Star as if everybody knew who they were. I'd never heard of them!

Steve Sutherland wrote: "Bandwagonesque echoes Chilton’s ‘Radio City’ so closely so many times that anyone with a prior knowledge of the American maverick’s work can’t help wondering whether these young Scots have overstepped the mark where acceptable, even laudable, inspiration becomes wholly criminal plagiarism.”

I just thought, what a pretentious arse, naming an obscure band nobody but old men like him have ever heard! I loved, and still love, Bandwagonesque. It made me want to check out Big Star. Doing so in early 1992 introduced me to an even greater love. But Bandwagonesque does not plagiarise Big Star. Sutherland was wrong. And pretentious.

To be fair, it wasn't just Sutherland who pointed out the alleged plagiarism. Although I can't remember if other reviewers just jumped on his bandwagon(ha!)
I had heard of Big Star because one of my friends loved them, but my main exposure to them before Bandwagonesque was knowing that some of their songs were covered on the This Mortal Coil albums.
Bandwagonesque stands on its own merits for me though.

Teenage Fanclub - Bad Seeds (b-side of Free Again 7" - sounds like Nick Cave fronting the Cramps. A bit Big Star-ish too though).

Speaking of Teenage Fanclub and cars, has anybody watched the movie Young Adult? The main character played by Charlize Theron has the song "The Concept" on a loop in her car. Its a great film to watch to boot, Theron's character is totally unhinged!

Checking out my local village library, which has had an major refurbish. CDs and DVDs available and it can be surprising what you find in deepest rural France!

A double CD EP by Beirut - disc 1 is 'March of the Zapotec' (with a Mexican brass band) and the second called 'RealPeople Holland' (electronic)

Never heard Beirut before, but am immediately struck how much Zac Condon's voice and phrasing resembles Neil Hannon's !

Sadly the reality of the song 'My Night With The Prostitute From Marseille' doesn't quite live up to its title.

Also borrowed

Curtis Mayfield - Curtis (Rhino reissue)
Frank Ocean - Channel Orange (see what all the fuss is about)

http://pitchfork.com/news/45029-pitchfor ktv-presents-documentary-on-the-flaming- lips-the-soft-bulletin/

Hopefully these are two of many more to come, if I could have a wishlist it would include Kid A by Radiohead and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco.

The My Bloody Valentine album finally arrived today, vinyl and CD copies.

Have already played it to death as I got the download sent to me when I ordered the vinyl/cd just under a month ago, but just great to finally have the physical artefacts.
Along with the Nick Cave album and the Atoms For Peace album this year is already shaping up to be a stellar year. In fact these three albums would have beaten anything in my top 3 albums of last year with ease, although last year was a particularly poor year imo.

The Bowie album, bar one track, sounded great. Even that one track (can't recall which one just now!) probably only dropped in quality compared to what surrounds it.

Right now, Abba - Knowing Me, Knowing You. Their saddest, and most brilliant, song.

The new Frightened Rabbit, "Pedestrian Verse" is really good. The single "Backyard Skulls" is certainly going to be one of my top songs of the year. Anyone remember Homestead Records from the 80's? One of my favorite Homestead artists, Big Dipper, has a new CD out "Crashes on the Platinum Planet", and it is really wonderful, particularly the single "Robert Pollard." Apparently Pollard called Big Dipper the "20th Greatest Band of All Time".

Austin, I remember the label well. I believe Demon Records released their stuff here in the U.K. It was nice to see Merge Records release Supercluster ( The Big Dipper Anthology ) a few years ago. I keep hoping that they or some other label will release an anthology for Salem 66 who also recorded for Homestead.

Cut Off Your Hands - You And I
Cut Off Your Hands - Hollow

Two very good indie pop albums by a New Zealand band who should be regretting their terrible name. Recommended for fans of The Smiths and The Go-Betweens (of which there are a few hereabouts I think).

Bitter Springs -- From The Parish of Arthritis

Like every album with too many tracks (18 according to the cover art but my CD player says 20) I will need to cull but there are definitely some strong songs on here and many numbers will profit from iPod shuffle so as to avoid being lost among 18 (or 20).

Randy, you can never have too much of a good thing. :-)

There are 20 tracks on the album. The first 14 are correctly listed on the cover art. Track 15 is an untitled 20 second instrumental. Hells Angel, Like Boorman's Son, Hispapaof and Girl On A Mountain Bike should be listed as tracks 16, 17, 18 and 19 respectively. The album ends with track 20, an untitled 40 second spoken word / musical piece.

Kid Canaveral - Now That You Are A Dancer.

Second album by this Edinburgh based band who are signed to Fence Records.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKWGR-KZ2 GQ

It comes across much better on disc as it needs to be played loud.

Stuart, New copies are almost impossible to find at the moment. The band hope to open a 'Store' on their new website in the very near future so it may well be worth holding off to see if they make the album available. The following is a link to a used copy for sale on Discogs ( US$9.00 plus shipping.)

http://www.discogs.com/buy/CD/Bitter-Spr ings-From-The-Parish-Of-Arthritis/834606 35?ev=bp_rel_det

There are also a few cheap used copies on AmazonCom.

Right, I got a used copy. And the seller sent it super fast too. I don't hesitate to buy used if new isn't available. And the silly prices (your 350GBP and the $211 I saw on Amazon) do NOT mean "new is available."

I also do not hesitate to buy used provided they are listed as being in very good or mint condition. I only do so from Sellers with good feedback and in most cases the discs I have received have be indistinguishable from new copies.

I am much less picky about the condition. Usually the only thing that is battered is the jewel case and that's easy to replace. I do want all the cover art of course. I once got a defective disc and it wasn't because of its being a used copy. It had a manufacturing defect on the surface which had been there all along.

The Laurels - Mesozoic EP. Sydney psych rock band who may have worn out their dad's copy of Loveless. Still very good though. The album, Plains, which came after the EP is much better and less derivative.

Psychic TV - Allegory and Self
Am I having a mid-life crisis with all this listening to slightly weirder favourites from my 80s self?
Current 93, Death in June and now Psychic TV, haven't listened to this stuff for years. Godstar is still rubbish but Just Like Arcadia sounds great. The C93 stuff sounds like The Incredible String Band now which is weird

The Pitchfork Media documentary on "If You're Feeling Sinister" got me to load Belle & Sebastian's early discs onto iTunes. (They were on the old library for the iPod I retired last summer.)

As I frequently am I was late to B & S, but not horribly so. I started on them some time in the '90s. I started with "Tigermilk" which I always loved and I still think is the single best B & S album. I never knew that "Sinister" was actually the album that introduced them to the world. It's a shame because "Tigermilk" has the advantage of a string of songs that Murdoch gathered together more gradually. While I think "Stars of Track and Field" is wonderful--a better produced version of it would have made it the ideal follow-up single if "Tigermilk" had been released as the first album--"Sinister" sounds to me like too many songs were thrown together too quickly. They all would have ended up better if they'd had further gestation time.

Emily Jane White - Ode to Sentience

Another CD borrowed from the library. Third album from this Californian singer-songwriter. Interesting melancholic alt-country, but she definitely has that "something" that lifts it above the rest.

This is the first track, but it misses the stunning cello of the recorded version

Don't mean to harp on but the Josh Rouse album really is a stonker. Super hooky songs, early 70s west coast vibe (much like 1972 which was called that for a reason) , some nice movie soundtrack like parts to the arrangements, highly recommended. I am going to keep playing it until the Spring finally arrives here in England (which apart from a robin singing for a mate in my garden every day doesnt appear to be happening

the Wire album is superb, I listened to it this morning on an early morning hungover drive back from Brighton and it's so good to hear a bunch of old geezers sounding so aggressive, inventive and just plain Wire brilliant.

Which Wire album, Cosmo? I have "Red Barked Tree" (and various older albums). Every time the iPod pitches up a song from RBT I'm amazed at how great it is. Frankly, I like it better than, say, "Ideal Copy."

I have a notion of what I'll try to get Kevin to come back, but I might not get to it until I return from my vacation which is coming up shortly. And maybe he'll benefit from a little longer stretch away.

Who'dathunk that Ned Collette's prior band would be an instrumental band? Kind of a disappointment since what I was expecting was some more of his literate songcraft.

Randy, I thought I mentioned that fact to you some time ago. There are a few vocal tracks on the second album ( The Perimeter Motor Show ) but it is nothing like his solo work.

Currently listening to :-

Salem 66 - Natural Disasters, National Treasures
Salem 66 - Down The Primrose Path
Salem 66 - Your Soul Is Mine, Fork It Over

They started life as an all-female indie rock band in Boston and recorded four albums for Homestead Records between 1985 and 1990.

Randy, as anthologies go, it is not a particularly good one. The band released two singles, an ep and four albums ( A Ripping Spin; Frequency And Urgency; Natural Disasters, National Treasures; Down The Primrose Path ) on Homestead Records between 1984 and 1990. 'Your Soul Is Mine' only collects together a track from one of the singles, three tracks from the ep, three tracks from 'A Ripping Spin' and 'Frequency And Urgency' in its entirety. Some of their stuff has never been released on cd ( the tracks from one of the two singles, three tracks from the ep and seven tracks from 'A Ripping Spin.) I have the first three albums on vinyl and everything which has been released on cd. Not a great band but I like them.

Are you familiar with Big Dipper and Dumptruck?

I managed to contact Sean Millar and he is sending me cd copies of 'Always Coming Home' and 'Of The People Parts 1 & 2.' He does not have any copies of Tarzan's Ambition' left unfortunately.

Useful info Hugh. I think I remember liking the earlier material on
"Your Soul is Mine" more than the later material. It was on my last iPod but I haven't seen fit to load it onto the new one yet. Like you said, not a great band. I am not familiar with Big Dipper or Dumptruck. Not terribly enticing band names, either of those.

The last Doctor Millar I have is "Always Coming Home." Padraig turned me onto him years ago. I thought he'd bailed on releasing things on CD and figured I'll need to participate in the new crowd fund scheme to get a copy of the new album.

Hugh, I have just ordered The Bitter Lie through Discogs. Previously I only had a CDR copy of it. I thought I had The Deal, but if I do I can't find it. Always Coming Home is magnificent. If FLAC is the only way to get it it's worth doing so. I'm pretty sure Of The People Parts 1 & 2 was never commercially available on CD. I think it was only possible to get it on CD through his website. I also have Part 1 on cassette. Sean reckons it sounds better on tape and I think he's right!

On your recommendation I have ordered the Big Dipper Anthology from Amazon but it says "currently out of stock". From your experience, is it likely ever to be back in stock, or would they just have made a limited number, never to be reprinted?

He no longer has cd copies of 'The Bitter Lie' and 'Tarzan's Ambition' for sale. I have to send him the money in an envelope once I receive the discs!!!! He comes across as a lovely guy.

As American bands of that era go, I like the Big Dipper but I would suggest you listen to some samples before placing an order if you have not already done so.

'Supercluster' is a Limited Edition Three Disc Box Set ( 5000 copies.) It is available direcly from Merge Records for US$14.98 plus shipping.

Andreas, Yes, it is very worth getting. I have the original Anthology on vinyl only and never did get the second one, so it was worthwhile for me. I got boxset from amazon.com for a decent price. They might have some left. It comes with very decent lines notes and a turtle shell guitar pick like Duane used (when he wasn't playing slide).

Thanks Michael.Even though I have also the second volume of the Anthology I can't withstand. I took notice of the offer on amazon.com. But sending it to Germany isn't the cheapest and not to forget Tax and customs fee. So I ordered right now the last copy which a small family business offers on the web for an acceptable price (and it seems that this is (was) really one of the last copies in Europe. I haven't found any other offer, only one for the double amount).
