Heard of the first, know nothing about them. The second were a really good early '80s band in the post-Joy Division vein--they were kind of contemporaries of Echo and the Bunnymen, Comsat Angels, etc. I believe they were out of Liverpool. Their first two albums were excellent, but I lost track of them after that. I believe the leader, Adrian Borland, committed suicide not that many years ago, sadly. Never heard of the third band. | ||

Half Man Half Biscuit were an early 80's group from England, who would basically take the mundane and make it funny. They would pick on the normal things in life, like kids programmes, c list celebreties and take the pis* out of them. The SOund were a real raw sounding group similar to Comsat Angels and their ilk, again an early 80's group. Interpol may have been influenced by them, that type of band, very good, what I have heard. Tinged with sadness, singer Adrian lkilled himself, and another guy died of Aids. They had balls this group. Don't know Breaks Co-p, like the name though. | ||

I saw The Sound play live twice in the early 80s. The first time was supporting Echo and The Bunnymen on the Crocodiles tour. I was blown away, I had never heard their debut album Jeopardy which had just been released, but I went straight out the next day and bought it. The 2nd time I saw them was the following year when they toured with The Comsat Angels. It was one of those tours where both bands were kindred spirits and of an equal standing so The Sound headlined one night, the Comsats headlined the next. At this point The Sound were touring their masterpiece "Into The Lions Mouth" and again they were fantastic, one of those rare bands who made a great record but actually managed to improve it in a live setting. Apparently Adrian Borland was gutted that The Sound never really broke through when contemporaries like The Bunnymen, U2, Simple Minds and New Order became huge, and the "failure" in his eyes led to his eventual suicide. Half Man Half Biscuit are from Liverpool, and have released about 6-7 albums initially on ProbePlus label. They make funny sort of songs such as "The Trumpton Riots", "I Hate Nerys Hughes" and "F***ing Hell Its Fred Tittmus". Depends what sort of mood your in, but I've not listened to the albums for years (maybe that suggests how good they are?????). Cheers Jon | ||

Half Man Half Biscuit is the greatest band name I've ever heard - I might have to check 'em out. They sound like they have an...interesting sense of humor. Shockingly, for a music geek like me, I don't really know the Sound. What an interesting and tragic saga...the music biz is truly cruel... Thanks, Kev. I absolutely love the Sound. A brilliant and sadly underrated band, which is pretty much what the folks up above say. My personal favorite Sound records are "Heads and Hearts" and the "Shock of Daylight" EP. I think at that point they had reached a nice balance of poppy-melodic and moody post-punk. "All Fall Down" is good too. Hell, they're all good, though I find the last album patchy. I think they are well worth checking out. |
