I am a newbie here, glad to see a message board supporting the work of the Go-Betweens! Not sure if there is a thread for this, but I thought I'd add one.
I got into the band long ago, when but a poor student surviving on beer and student union concerts. It must have been about 86 when the band played Kingston Poly, nr London. Best 50p I ever spent, although the band looked knackered in the middle of a long tour and the gig was poorly attended (you could sit on a plastic chair right in front of the stage, totally unobstructed). I taped it, and that tape rarely left my ghetto blaster.
It was not until I moved to Australia that I got back into the band, re-discovering their albums, and seeing the storming Newtown RSL gig of the Forster-Mclennan acoustic re-union.
There's loads more experiences, even a long vitriolic interview with Amanda and Lindy straight after the original break up for a fanzine, a tape I have sadly lost, and numerous other gigs.
Few bands have provided such a wealth of great bands, and also soundtracked my life.
Hi all!

Simon

Simon, what a great story! Sounds like a really fun way to have discovered them. '86 would have been when they were touring after Liberty Belle came out, which I imagine would have been a great time to see them. And no surprise that a post-break up interview with Amanda and Lindy would be vitriolic.

My own "story," if you could even call it that, is incredibly mundane by comparison - basically, I read about them in the Trouser Press Record Guide, saw a copy of Before Hollywood, bought it, promptly fell in love, and spent the next 6 months tracking down their at that point difficult to find albums.

Welcome on board Simon. You will find us a friendly lot. Some of us go back to the old Tallulah mailing list days where we used trade live conceets on cd-r's.

For me it was shortly after 16LL was released in November of 1988 and falling in love with the band after hearing a few cuts from 16LL on my favorite Sunday night radio program. I went out and bought the cd and the others followed. Sadly I didn't get to see the original band as they nevr tour stopped in Michigan. I did see Robert and Grant at a local show in June of 1999, having missed their only other previous local area show eight years prior. I did make a road trip to Chicago in June of 2005 to see the reformed band at the Abbey Pub.

Greetings Simon !

There is an 'Archived Post' from 2009 (July - September), where the question "Who has seen the Go-Betweens live?" was asked. There are some nice memories and tales from many of the current posters there if you are interested.

My story started with buying the "I Need Two Heads" 45, simply because I was a Postcard completist at the time...but it wasn't until "Before Hollywood" that it became a true love affair.
