The current edition of Mojo (The Smiths on the cover) features a crudely edited version of Cattle and Cane on the free CD - not sure when/how this edit came to pass but I certainly haven't encountered it before . The best part of a minute has been shorn from the end of the third verse and Robert's spoken-word piece. To be filed next to Cut it Out - the 12" version! |

Pat, That is utterly appalling and as you say extremely crudely done. I have never even heard of that edited version existing and I can't imagine that the band would have agreed to it. You don't mess with perfection ! I am sure that my Rough Trade vinyl 45 is the full 4:12 version and this version comes in at 3:30. |

Wow. It could be my imagination, but has it been speeded up too? |

Mojo had a U2 jukebox CD featuring Cattle and Cane back in 2005. I've never heard it but that might be the source of the edit. The Wedding Present's cover cut at least a verse out. I can't bring myself to listen to it as it's so bad but it only lasts 3:04. |

That version was intact. It explains why the weird edit is used - these magazines don't repeat a song they've used previously on a CD. |

"Cut it Out - the 12" version!". I take it from the ! that this is a joke but is there something about the 12" version that's different to the LP? |

The 12" version of Cut it Out is about a minute longer, if memory serves. More of it to love, I suppose. |

The "Cattle and Cane" edit is the same speed as the original—only the guitar solo is edited out. In the original, Robert's recitation is at 3:02, but in the edit, it appears at 2:15. It's strange that the edit leaves that three-note guitar intro intact. Cutting that would have been an easy and relatively unobstrusive way to shave off 15 seconds. |

Thanks Pat. I used to have the 12" but sold it when all the b-sides became available on CD reissues. I never noticed the a-side was different - my mistake. |

There is a version that edits out that intro. If Andrew is right about the running time of the Rough Trade single (4:12), then that's the one with the intro cut, because the album version is 4:27. I heard the Rough Trade single version before I heard the album version, and when I listened to Before Hollywood for the first time, I was surprised to hear that intro. |

It's my recollection that the U.S. version of their "1978 - 1990" compilation had a version of "Cattle & Cane" without the little guitar intro. That comp was my introduction to the GoBees and I was surprised when I heard the introduction to the song later. No idea if the EU 2-CD version uses the full version or not. |

The 2 CD version was only released in Japan. In Europe it was a single disc with 22 songs. However, I'm pretty sure the three note intro was not used on any edition of 1978-1990, vinyl, cassette or either CD version. |

Playing it now. Now. No intro, just straight into the song. |
