I bought the album yesterday and have listened to it several times already. It's excellent. The album features a more stripped-down sound even if there’s a violin (or viola) player in the ensemble and other occasional baroque touches. I've always thought of The Go-Betweens as honorary New Yorkers whose spiritual home was CBGB. There are several tracks on "Songs To Play" that evoke the simplicity, precision and directness of TALKING HEADS:77. I’m really struck by the appealing minimalism of the arrangements, the one-note guitar solos and such. It's so refreshing to hear a new album with this kind of aesthetic. Rock on, Robert. | ||

Listened to Songs to Play in the car on the way to work yesterday (80km commute). I can confirm that it has at least 8 good songs on it which is not bad compared to 2 and 3 respectively on U2's and the Waterboy's latest offerings. I think the time lapse added to Robert's latest offering as well as the change of personnel. Other thoughts are ... there's bits of Forever Changes in there (no bad thing), it's lo-fi (if that's the correct term - probably not), it's got a nice warm analogue sound (even on CD) and 'It's a family affair' (Sly & the Family Stone). All good. | ||

I received 187/500 of the vinyl. Except for one listen to the CD version I've been exclusively listening to the LP. I truly, deeply love 20 minute song sides. Even if I turn it over and play the other side--and I do of course--that small intermission of getting up and flipping it over frames each set of five songs. Songs start to blur and lose position when they are strung together on too long a necklace. I have a perfectly audiophilic Thorens turntable with an excellent Audio Technica cartridge but I choose to listen to Songs to Play on an ancient 1960 Garrard Type A with the auto pickup linkage removed. It's equipped with a loud fat Ortofon DJ cartridge which on the old machine must track at a heavy 3 grams. Hopefully it doesn't kill the record because the sound is just right: fat and warm and in your face. I've also been using this to listen to the new Apartments album and a person can possibly argue about it for Peter's record but for Robert's it is absolutely perfect. I am reluctant to make qualitative comments about this record so soon (!) but it's sounding to me like a significantly more consistent album than "The Evangelist" which for me was breathtaking on what should be Side One and then suffered from unevenness on what should be Side Two. The colorful but uncluttered arrangements give each song just what they want. Robert's vocal delivery is so effortless and the phrasing invariably spot-on. Surely his vocal on "I Love Myself (and I Always Have) is his to-date high water mark in the art of sing/speak. I have my favorites so far but they are still like students jostling into position for their class photo so I'll wait before making any declarations. | ||
