Thank you for this Padraig. One of the touching constant things about both Robert and Grant is their sheer music fandom. I am often amused by how far Robert's and Grant's musical tastes and my own diverge, but they really believed in the magic of music from the mid-century forward, in it's ability to make a difference. I agree with his comments about Prince, one of the truest brightest spots in mainstream American music of the '80s. I suppose I'm organically wired to gravitate straight toward the underdogs so I find myself defending both "Spring Hill Fair" and "Tallulah" as albums. In the case of SHF, in my view that's the album on which Robert really took off as a songwriter. Perhaps people look down on it because they're used to Grant being the focal point. On SHF, after the wonderfulness of "Bachelor Kisses" which is transcendent (uber-processed sound notwithstanding), it's all about those great dynamic Robert Forster songs. What is wrong with "Tallulah" other than "Cut it Out"? It's a great album and one on which Robert's and Grant's contributions are remarkably well balanced against each other. And I love the covers of both SHF and "Tallulah." SHF has the cover of an exotic long-pursued musical gem like "Left Banke Too." "Tallulah" is another Dylan cover. I'm really looking forward to Robert's book. |
