Ric's American Bar in Fortitude Valley. It was Grant's hangout. You have to drink a Long Island iced tea. It was Grant's tipple of choice. Rocking Horse records and Egg records, both favoured by Robert. |

Hi Richard, in addition to Padraig's recommendations I'd also say go to places they hung out in at various times, such as University of Queensland. I would hoof it around neighborhoods they stayed in. Robert lived in West End when he wrote the songs for "Warm Nights." Grant lived in Highgate Hill when he died. Highgate Hill is more or less next to West End. If you have time wander up into Spring Hill, though in 2007 it looked like a lot of it was being swept away by new development. If you have the David Nichols book, re-read it to refresh your recollection of other places to go. If you want to stalk Robert I think he lives in the Gap now. That's a less central suburb I think. Hopefully David Gagen or one of the other locals will see this and give you much better direction. I personally found inner Brisbane, which definitely includes Highgate Hill, West End, Spring Hill and Fortitude Valley to be remarkably walkable. |

Also, the Powerhouse in New Farm. Robert has played there many times, including the legendary "Four nights of Robert Forster", which Randy, me and several other regulars on this board attended. |

Yes! I have got my tickets for Manchester. The Deaf Innstitute is a small but great venue. Thanks for alerting us to this |

U of Q, though it is much changed from those days ... check out the Great Court which is probably about the only major landmark at the uni which remains much the same. (If you are into physics pop into the physics building and check out the tar drop experiment.) The Rec Club and Refectory (where I saw Grant play an outdoor lunchtime gig during 87 or 88) are much changed. Also Schonell Theatre has been updated as well. Then hop on City Cat ferry down to New Farm Park and walk to Powerhouse (not only location of the previously mentioned shows by Robert, but also where many people gathered after Grant's memorial for a few drinks in his memory). See if there are any gigs on at the Tivoli, the DVD was recorded there, and venue of last 2 shows that I saw the band play. Also see if there are any suitable shows on at The Zoo, an essential BrisVegas gig experience. Along with Westend/Highgate Hill, maybe take a stroll through Paddington if you are nearby (its not far from the bridge) ... its probably a bit more representative of what Spring hill was like back in the day, instead of the old workers cottages getting knocked down for apartments they have just been renovated instead. Lovely city views from Upper Cairns Terrace, and you get a great feel of the hilly nature of a lot of the city on some of those steep streets (up and down, round and round indeed). And maybe try and have a read of Bachelor Kisses by Nick Earls. It and his other novels are generally pretty funny and do a pretty good job of evoking the Brisbane that we knew growing up a few years after Robert and Grant. And see if you can read Pig City by Andrew Stafford. |
