On Friday 14 July at QPAC, Lindy Morrison, Amanda Brown and John Willsteed will be joined by Dan Kelly, Danny Widdicombe and Luke Daniel Peacock to play 16 Lovers Lane. They will be joined by The Church's Steve Kilbey, GANGajang's Mark Callaghan and Died Pretty's Ron Peno, as well as festival artistic director Katie Noonan and her brother, Tyrone, plus Montaigne, Sam Cromack and Jen Boyce (Ball Park Music), Tim Nelson and Zoe Davis (Cub Sport), Sahara Beck and Kirin J Callinan. http://themusic.com.au/news/all/2017/05/ 30/go-betweens-members-to-reunite-for-16 -lovers-lane-tribute-ft-steve-kilbey-ron -peno-and-more/ I'm torn between going up to Brisbane for this and waiting, and hoping, there is a Sydney show to follow. |

Padraig, you know it's the best place to be, weather wise, on July 14. Interesting that Robert isn't participating. |

Austin, Randy, I'm not going to make it as I'm working that weekend. I'm not working on the Friday, but seeing a show in Brisbane Friday night then getting back to Sydney for work at 9am Saturday would be too tight (and I'd have to do it on about four hours sleep). I'm sure the gig will be booked to play Sydney soon, or at least by January for the Sydney Festival. Simon, I think you're a couple of continents away, aren't you? |

Yep, several, however you travel. I must have been tired when posting that (I'm tired now, waiting in Terminal 5 for my flight to Nice for a couple of days cycling - it's work, y'know!) |

Tie-in with the forthcoming movie notwithstanding, is it now de rigeur for artists to perform at a tribute to their own work? Without either of the songwriters this falls slightly short in the authenticity stakes. That said, it will be interesting to watch John Willsteed take us through his parts from the album. |

There is a short review and photos from the concert at the "That Striped Sunlight Sound" blog. http://stripedsunlight.blogspot.com.au Also, according to Lindy in a comment to the Guardian article, Robert was in the audience and told her by email that he loved the concert. |

As I expected, this show is coming to the Sydney festival in January (for many years this festival has got my gig-going year off to a flying start). It's on January 18 at the State theatre. A fine venue. https://www.sydneyfestival.org.au/2018/1 6-lovers-lane |

I went to the Sydney show last week, but I've waited until now to write about it because I was too tired and I wanted to process it all. The night started brutally with some cock roaring at the Aboriginal woman doing a "welcome to country" introduction. I've never seen that happen before, and I've seen scores of welcome to country greetings over the years. It was appalling. He should have been thrown out, but I don't think he was. As well as Lindy Morrison, Amanda Brown and John Willsteed, the band also included Dan Kelly (solo artist and also plays in his uncle Paul’s band), Danny Widdicombe (of The Wilson Pickers) and Luke Daniel Peacock (of Halfway). The music went from dreadful to great. The dreadful came three songs in when a singer called Romy Vager did Love Is A Sign. Her voice is in the same ballpark as latter day Tom Waits. It completely ruined the song. But later, she did Apology Accepted, which was far better. The first truly moving moment was Amanda singing The Devil’s Eye. Later, she sang Boundary Rider (along with Jodi Phillis and Patricia Young from Sydney band The Clouds), which was a surprising, but lovely, inclusion. Steve Kilbey did Streets Of Your Town. His voice doesn't quite suit it, but it's close and at least he knew Grant. He is funny too, though Lindy got tired of his story telling and cut him off by counting the song in. Kilbey came back to do Rock ‘n’ Roll Friend later on. 16 Lovers Lane was played in order, with Shogun from Royal Headache doing Love Goes On. He seemed quite nervous. Maybe it was the biggest crowd he'd ever played to, but more likely it was the pressure of performing the first song. It wasn't great, but he did a fine version of The House That Jack Kerouac Built at the end of the night. Rob Snarski told a nice story about supporting The Go-Betweens in Perth when he was still a teenager, then did a strong take on Quiet Heart. Kirin J Callinan paced the stage in a cowboy hat for You Can’t Say No Forever and came back later wearing a dress for a good version of Twin Layers Of Lightning. Having Clouds sung by Phillis and Young of The Clouds could have been too cute, but it worked. It was lovely. Izzi Manfredi of The Preatures’ voice is too high for Was There Anything I Could Do? but she did much better later on with Apples In Bed (which is on disc 2 of the 16 Lovers Lane 2004 remaster). Dan Kelly stepped up to the mic to do a grand take on I’m All Right and was followed by another highlight, Peter Walsh doing Dive For Your Memory after a very funny introduction about his brief time in The Go-Betweens. Walsh reckoned Robert wanted him out because he didn’t want another tall man in the band. He also said Robert gave his blessing to his taking part in the show. He said they communicated first by email, then Robert phoned him while crossing the Liffey in Dublin, which was important because of how much Robert loves James Joyce. Dave Mason of The Reels sang Cattle And Cane. He was wearing an Abba T-shirt and said he was just back from Sweden. It was a good version, but the two fluffed starts took some of the steam out of it. Overall, it was great to see the joy on Lindy, Amanda and John’s faces in playing the music they had such a great part in creating. Set list 1. Love Goes On (vocals: Shogun of Royal Headache) 2. Quiet Heart (Rob Snarski of The Blackeyed Susans) 3. Love Is A Sign (Romy Vager) 4. You Can’t Say No Forever (Kirin J Callinan) 5. The Devil’s Eye (Amanda Brown) 6. Streets Of Your Town (Steve Kilbey of The Church) 7. Clouds (Jodi Phillis & Patricia Young of The Clouds) 8. Was There Anything I Could Do? (Izzi Manfredi of The Preatures) 9. I’m All Right (Dan Kelly) 10. Dive For Your Memory (Peter Walsh of The Apartments) 11. Rock ‘n’ Roll Friend (Steve Kilbey) 12. Twin Layers Of Lightning (Kirin J Callinan) 13. Apples In Bed (Izzi Manfredi) 14. Apology Accepted (Romy Vager) Encore 15. Cattle And Cane (Dave Mason of The Reels) 16. Boundary Rider (Amanda Brown, Jodi Phillis & Patricia Young) 17. The House That Jack Kerouac Built (Shogun) Overall it was lovely to see Lindy Morrison, Amanda Brown and John Willsteed taking great joy in playing songs they contributed so much to. Pádraig, cheers for that post. In the same way as you with this show, I'm still disgesting the DVD. What do you make of John Wilsteed ? I'm sure that I've already posted about seeing the band playing in Glasgow and how I took an instant dislike to the man. I'm not the world's biggest fan of "16 Lovers Lane" but certainly appreciate his input to that record. What surprised me in the documentary was his very emotional interview. Given that he says that he didn't know their songs before joining the band, do you have any insight into his reaction ? |

I've only met Willsteed once, after an Apartments gig when he and Amanda were in the band. I was wary of his reputation, and he didn't disappoint, he did say something cutting about someone. But that was more than 10 years ago. Things change, and I'm sure he has too. I was very surprised, maybe even shocked, at his emotional interview in the film. It's not news that he had various issues when he was in The Go-Betweens (his drinking is mentioned in the film, and is also plain to see in some of the footage), so maybe sobriety and the distance of time allowed him some perspective on his time in the band. Have you watched the extras on the DVD? I thought Robert Vickers's bit where he said Robert's songs always needed a lot more work than Grant's was very interesting. |

Thanks for taking the time to reply Pádraig. Yes i've watched the extras and they are indeed interesting. It was the main reason that I bought the DVD as I assumed that if you downloaded the film you didn't get the extras... |

Kirin J Callinan, one of the 16 Lovers Lane show performers mentioned above, has pleaded guilty to obscene exposure at the Arias, an Australian version of the Grammys. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/f eb/21/singer-kirin-j-callinan-pleads-gui lty-to-obscene-exposure-at-arias?utm_sou rce=esp&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=GU +Today+AUS+v1+-+AUS+morning+mail+callout &utm_term=264916&subid=8642540&CMP=ema_6 32 |

Interesting that so much of this thread slipped by me. Well, we now know who Romy Vager is. I also noticed and was surprised by John Wilsteed's breaking up in his reminiscence. I guess it just shows how sometimes we really don't have a clue when we are living through our best moment. The loss of Robert Vickers was fatal. Unlike Willsteed he was committed to the band. He was almost certainly a stabilizing buffer between other members. Willsteed was an irritant instead. Just look at them. Vickers had a perfect 60s Sunset Strip cool. Willsteed looked like he'd gotten lost on his way to a Thompson Twins cover show. Vickers was international in scope and lifestyle, just like Robert, Grant and Lindy (and like PMW for that matter). Willsteed was a townie with pretensions. |
