I've just seen it. If you are in Sydney and don't go to see it tonight or tomorrow night, you will regret it. |

At the Q&A after the premiere last night Lindy responded to one question by saying it was "the most boring question ever". She takes no prisoners. (The question was "what would you say to your younger self".) She also said after this she was never going to answer another question about the Go-Betweens again. Robert F didn't take part in the Q&A, but Robert V, Amanda Brown and John Willsteed did, along with Lindy. |

I can't wait to see this. But it might take a year or so for the film to make it across the globe. Did you stay for the after party? |

Hi Fred, no, I didn't. It seemed like very few people were going to go to it, so I didn't bother. Friends of mine were at a second showing of the film in a different cinema last night and said Robert and Kriv Stenders did a Q&A there. |

I attended a screening last night (Thursday 15 June) at George St in Sydney where the director, Kriv Stenders, and a number of Go-Betweens were in attendance. Kriv introduced the film with a list of thank yous and also added rock bands to the list of groups (animals & children) film makers should never work with. All in good humour, though! The film itself is quite beautiful. It's structured really well and the way the interviews are conducted is clever and looks great. You have to see the film to see what I mean. In the Q&A afterwards, Kriv said he was tired of watching docos where musicians are in medium shots sitting at mixing desk so he focused on each of the protagonists' faces quite close up also adding that the faces of these people (and at their age) also have stories to tell. A plethora of archival footage & photos. Interviews from others around at the time. Highlights for me were Peter Milton Walsh, Mick Harvey and journalist Clinton Walker whose insights into the band are hilarous, brutally honest and brilliant. I won't say anymore about the film itself. Just seek it out if you can. As the credits rolled their was rapturous applause from the whole cinema (which, incidentally, was huge...this was no small room. I'm not good with assessing numbers in a room but there would have been close to 1000 people in attendance). There was a Q&A after the screening with Kriv plus some band members in attendance - Amanda Brown, Lindy Morrison, John Willsteed plus Robert Vickers who had flown in from New York for this screening. No new revelations really except Lindy said that she was now done with talking about the Go-Betweens. No more interviews, this film was the end point for her. The comment was made that so much material had to be left out of the film (particularly the hours of band members' interviews) but Robert Vickers commented that despite the amount that had to be edited out he thought all of his best stories were included in the final film. So I don't know where this film heads to next. Meanwhile I will wait for the DVD release... |

I was just re-reading the comments on Padraig's/Guardian review of the film and came across this (and I laughed out loud in the pub before going to see a screening of the director's cut of Blood Simple - me, pretentious... etc?). Well, it made me laugh. I'm a sub-editor and I've worked with writers (sort of) like that... Great James Joyce Joke: A friend calls on him one day & finds him slumped over his desk in utter despair. "What is it Jim? What's wrong?" he asks. Joyce says "I've spent the entire day at this desk & I've only written 6 words!" "But Jim", his friend replies, "for you 6 words a day is prodigious", to which Joyce replies "True...but I don't know in which order to put them!" |

There are seven short clips on ABC iview of out takes that didn't make the film. They are well worth watching. I don't think you'll be able to see them outside Australia. They are probably on the DVD though. |

>I've just watched the extras on the DVD. It's >only in the final seconds that Glenn and Adele >are mentioned. That is ridiculous. The director may have thought he needed to exclude them for narrative simplicity, but their exclusion means the documentary doesn’t tell the full story of the band. |

Agreed. With the greatest of respect to Temucin Mustafa, it's a gets more coverage than Glenn and Adele combined. Would this fall into the category of revisionism or denialism? Either way, it's poor form. |

After two partial viewings because of insufficient time I watched “Right Here” last night. It did give very short shrift to the Mk 2 era and other than a brief glimpse of Adele in the Portland sessions footage and a still with Glenn in it the final band really didn’t get any mention. That was genuinely odd. On the other hand I really enjoyed the footage with Lindy and Robert Vickers and Amanda. It was obviously necessary to mention Wilsteed but i’d give him less space and Adele and Glenn a lot more. I have about as much enthusiasm for John Wilsteed as he had for the Go Betweens. I don’t buy the myth that his playing was such an essentiall ingredient to 16 Lovers Lane. Grant knew how to do good guitar fills and Amanda was a multi-instrumentalist. Losing Robert Vickers was more of a negative than acquiring Wilsteed was a positive. He was essentially a session man with them. The end of the film really brought back the nightmare. I still remember coming home from a weekend away from the internet to find the announcement from the administrator of this board in my email. Incredible. Grant was 48. I was 49. I spent weeks thinking I should quit my job and sell all my stuff and just wander. No one else’ death has impacted me like that. I still haven’t watched the extras. I will. |

I want to comment on Clinton Walker’s assessment of Spring Hill Fair as a dud album. I think this probably reflects Clinton being more of a Grant fan than a Robert fan. IMO Spring Hill Fair is a great album for Robert. The only song you can maybe argue about is the almost glam rocker “The Old Way Out.” I like it but, no it’s not a classic. But “You’ve Never Lived” and “Part Company” and “Draining the Pool” and “Man o Sand”? All four are major moments. Robert was on fire on Spring Hill Fair. Grant was seemingly not quite ready for a new album yet. “Bachelor Kisses” is wonderful but none of the rest of his offerings are remembered among his greats. “River of Money” is a full-on abdication of his chance to supply half the songs. If you are a Robert fan Spring Hill Fair is emphatically not a dud. |

So here's the question for those Americans who've seen the DVD. I see it's available now at Amazon but it's listing has some kind of caution sign telling me it's a Region 4 DVD, which presumably won't play on my on decidedly pedestrian (and ancient) unit here at home. So Randy and Fred, assuming you guys watched the DVD, what sorcery did you use? And why are "regions" still a thing? That seems so 1990s. And why am I kvetching about buying a DVD? That seems so 2005. |

Rob, I have an "all regions" DVD player which I bought second hand. I can normally use it to watch DVDs from the U.K., the Czech Republic, France, no problem. I did have some problems with this disc mis-tracking and skipping, so I watched it on my elderly 2006 MacBook Pro which is a 17 inch. I had no problem with the old Apple. |

Interesting points re Springhill Fair/Clinton Walker, Randy. For what it's worth, my theory is that 'River of Money' was not unrelated to the aborted plan to hire John Cale to produce the album. Basically, ROM was Grant's (failed) homage to 'The Gift'. I'm still not sure how to categorise 'Slow Slow Music' as it falls short on so many levels. If anything it's a shot across the bow ahead of the gatling gun assault on our collective consciousness that was 'Cut it Out'. I have always liked 'Unkind & Unwise' and not just for Robert Vickers' bass playing either. Not much wrong with 'Five Words' & 'Bachelor Kisses' is one of the greatest songs ever written. The most perplexing aspect is that he had other, better songs at his disposal around that time. Presumably it wasn't solely Grant's decision to run with 'River of Money' and 'Slow, Slow Music' at the expense of 'Emperor's Courtesan', 'Newton Told Me' or 'Second Hand Furniture'. Even 'This Girl, Black Girl' would have qualified under the same rules that allowed 'Man O'Sand' to be re-worked. Anyway, to call Sprinhill Fair a dud is to do it a disservice. The highlights far outshine the lowlights. |

Personally, I love SHF. I agree with Robert's assessment that it's the 'dark star' of their catalogue - a bit overlooked between the recognised twin peaks of BH and LBATBDE. Not altogether cohesive admittedly, but its lack of perfection is part of its charm. I agree that RF's songs are all stellar (although Man o'Sand, I feel was certainly not an improvement over the original). I also really like GM's contributions. 'Slow slow music' has gradually grown on me over the 30 years I've been listening to it - I like its urgency. I find River of Money quite funny (is Grant deliberately being pretentious?,)but the song is a little long. |

Have not seen the film yet - but with regard to little emphasis on mk 2 - is it not true that most biopics / band biographies etc tend to deal with the 'early/classic years' in minutiae and then tend to gallop over the final years in whatever guise they come in. I'm not vindicating that aspect of the film, it's just something I've always noticed. |

I first saw the band play live promoting SHF. They were supporting Aztec Camera who had had a top 20 hit with Oblivious and were promoting their new album, the very awful Knife. That was the same tour that Brendan O’Hare mentioned willing the Go-Betweens off the stage in his appreciation of Grant when he died in the (Glasgow) Herald. In his defence, he was 14 at the time. I saw that show in Manchester and they were tremendous. Aztec Camera played mostly poor songs very well to a largely young female audience. For me, SHF is a great album. I’d rank it above Tallulah, and on a par with BH and LBatBDE. I also prefer it to the patchy 16LL. I can’t abide Streets of Your Town, Was There Anything I Could Do? is badly played and arranged and I’m All Right is mediocre. |

It would be fun to chew over the merits of the respective albums! I have a great fondness for Tallulah also. I confess that I forgot Man O Sand was a remake. That clips back Robert’s score a bit though I think Rare Breed comes from about that time doesn’t it? I used to think Rare Breed was a reject but I definitely no longer have that view. Newton Told Me would really help Grant’s score and the album. I agree about Secondhand Furniture and have always loved This Girl Black Girl in a big way. Never been too keen on Emperor’s Courtesan. Nor, to be fair, Attraction. Sweet Tasting Hours almost sounds like Easybeats circa 1965, fine by me but I can understand if others see that as a vice. Ted, I never thought about River of Money being an homage to The Gift. You’re almost certainly right. Of course I never listen to The Gift either so no wonder I didn’t think of it. It could have been worse, an homage to Sister Ray. I didn’t realize that Slow Slow Music had so many detractors. I don’t love it but I don’t see it as being as unfortunate as Cut It Out. I was never a fan of Aztec Camera. They seem so pallid, so quavering next to the Go Betweens. There just wasn’t the color or the variety. I am always amused by critical opinions of 16LL. They are so refreshingly against the grain. I don’t have a negative view of it but it is not my favorite Go Betweens LP. It needed some more jagged edges than just the cheap strummy acoustic guitar. Totally agree about Was There Anything I Could Do. I find it unfathomable that such a pedestrian chord change and Mumford & Sons type arrangement induced the record flaks to choose it for a single. Couldn’t believe it kicked off Bellavista Terrace. Dusty you are right about the convention for bio pics. But it’s a shame. For that matter i’d have loved a section on their solo careers. But considering the relative commercial success of the Mark 2 period and the fact that Mark 2 is when Grant died I would have hoped for a different balance. Ok, enough of me. |

Back in the old Tallulah Mailing List days we spent many a happy hour discussing the merits of the albums. I'm sure we must have compiled a "definitive" ordering, as voted for by the members, at least once. Cant recall what "won"? Maybe some else can? |

I have a nagging suspicion it was 'Before Hollywood'. Randy - just to add to your mention of 'Rare Breed'. What a fantastic song! It's the 'dark star' of the 'dark star' album it never appeared on. There are three versions of it available - the best surely being the Peel version found exclusively on the Peel sessions cd. Right, I'll stop wibbling about SHF now. |

I seem to recall 'Before Hollywood' getting the nod back in the day. Like all great bands, they had more than just one outstanding album. Of course, this was all in the early 2000's. Before 'Oceans Apart' which, as everyone knows, was their greatest album. ;) Looking forward to the remix/remaster in the 3rd boxset which should appear some time around 2025. |

So I finally got to see this. The first thrill was pulling the DVD packaging out of mailer and seeing Padraig's review quote greeting me right there on the cover. So I was already positively predisposed to the contents. I thought the film was terrific. Even having read Robert book and David's bio and countless interviews I still learned things. And if the tyranny of time and pacing meant loads of information got glossed over and swept away I thought they did justice to the spirit of the band. I sure wish there'd been more live footage and Mach II coverage, but I understand why both might have come up short in the end. I hope people get to see this in the States in a proper release. |

Glad you were able to watch it Rob. Did you have any technical issues with playing the DVD? Are there still some people on here who haven't seen the film? I'm asking because I'd enjoy a discussion of our impressions. My comment about Clinton Walker's assessment of SHF upthread ran the risk of being a spoiler for people who hadn't yet seen the film. |

No DVD issues at all, however I followed your advice and watched it on my computer. I recently bought a decent-sized monitor to pair with my laptop and used my Bose bluetooth speaker so it was kind of a cinema-like experience even though I was sitting at my home-office desk. I even made popcorn. I have some very specific thoughts on Mr. Walker's judgement on SHF. They could really be summed up in two words if I was feeling pressed for time. |

I thought it was going to be one of those “why we did this film” things but it really is a lot of extra stuff that couldn’t fit into the main film due to time constraints. I found that helped with some of the shortfall of the main film and got a lot out of it. |

I did, too. I liked how they just kinda threw it in there almost unprocessed. It really did fill in some holes. There were some segments of the film I thought were jarringly brief considering how important I viewed them in context of the band's history. Some of the extras helped with that. But it also raises the main issue I have critiquing this firm at all. I know so much about this band and their music is so impossibly baked into my life I can't begin to imagine what it would look like to a casual fan much less a newcomer. I automatically fill in omissions and oversights. I know the music inside and out. An unanswered slur against one of my favorite albums barely registers because it's not going to dent my opinion. I'm just happy to see the band on screen and hear some new stories. So is this, objectively, a worthy telling of the Go-Betweens story? I'll never be anything like an objective observer so I really don't know. But I had fun watching it and I'm sure I'll watch it again. |

Rob, what you said above is a terrific insight into watching the film as a rusted-on Go-Betweens fan. I wish I'd thought of it. |

No one needs to read this. I just need to write it. I just watched both the official feature and the "extras" (assuming I read the video links correctly). Although I bought the DVD shortly after it was released this was only my second viewing. I was struck by how much better and more important the "extras" were than the actual feature. Again, assuming I didn't somehow get confused with which link was which. By the one with extras, I mean the one that talks about the Mark II period and Grant's death. It also includes the stuff about their young days with Tim Mustafa etc. That link. I was reminded all over again of how comprehensively devastated I was when Grant died. I literally grieved over the death of Grant more than I have for any other human being except for one boyfriend I broke up with further back in my past. I grieved more for Grant than I did for my best friend who died equally abruptly a little more than three years before Grant. I grieved more for Grant than I did for my own father who died about 18 months after Grant. I felt like I could not talk to anyone about it, that there was something wrong with me for grieving so intensely for the loss of someone I had never even spoken to. But he was almost the same age as I. (One year younger in fact.). He and Robert are who inspired me to write songs again after putting them away "with other childish things" back when I was about 19 or so. When Grant died I felt like chucking everything in my life aside and wandering on my own. I had come to terms with the fact that I lived a conventional bourgeois life, partly thanks to the inspiration from Grant and Robert to resume writing so that I could attain a greater sense of balance within myself, but when Grant was gone the scab was torn off and yet again I felt like a failure for taking the road most traveled. Grant's death triggered a huge existential crisis for me. This is why I can only watch this deeply moving film for me--especially the extra bits--at infrequent intervals. |

I don't think that's weird, Randy. I think for some of us, the Go-Betweens represented some kind of Platonic ideal of not just what a band could be, but of what artists are supposed to be. They approached what they did with such obvious care and thought, and the results were so consistently transcendent, it all had an air of permanence to it. Plus, they seemed knowable. They never cracked that ceiling where it seemed like your fandom made you one in a throng. It always felt personal. Grant's death knocked me sideways and I can still get verklempt thinking about it. I find the end of the film extremely hard to watch. |

You nailed it Rob. They were indeed my Platonic ideal of artists as pop musicians in the late 20th Century. And, yes, they did seem knowable, not only because of their smaller audience but also because in many ways they seemed to come from an Australian version of my own middle class California background. It really kills me to see the footage of them playing at Rhino Records in L.A.. As late as that was in their original classic run I still hadn't discovered the Go Betweens, but Rhino Records was my exclusive go-to store when I attended UCLA until I moved out of that part of L.A. in early '85. I discovered Magazine thanks to Rhino. I remember buying a two-LP Monkees anthology on an Australian reissue label around 1981 or so. I was really excited about it because it had a bunch of their songs that only appeared on the shows but not on records. I remember thinking I "had" to buy something else acceptably cool at the same time to avoid the imagined contempt of the store clerk but I don't remember what I selected. I was the perfect candidate for the Go-Betweens. |
