OK a really weird one. The interviewer gives the impression he knows very little about the band. Keeps dropping in anecdotes about other bands he has interviewed. Tedious. Lindy is as sharp,direct and open as ever. At one point she wonders why she'd agreed to do the interview ! But she is always worth listening to. Andrew, one of the reasons I like so much C86 music is because the Go-Betweens were a big influence. What you consider "twee nonsense" was built upon the Go-Bees' (in the early 80s very anachronistic) love for tight focused pop. Of course, most of the C86 people forgot about the other part of the Go-Bees program: the creative Dylanesque approach to lyrics. The Go Betweens, and yes the vastly less pop-toned Smiths also, made the world safe again for weedy little guitar bands to exist. Now off to the interview and thanks for the link! | ||

Fun interview. I do have to wonder why the guy considers himself a C86 guy when he seems only to know about the Smiths--who of course AREN'T C86--and name drops Motorhead, Black Sabbath and the Troggs for crissakes! But Lindy is fun. She added something I don't remember, i.e., that Robert & Grant envisioned going to Nashville and recording the 7th Go Betweens album with the musicians who backed Dylan. That's kind of what Grant ended up doing with Horsebreaker Star, albeit with the Athens Georgia crowd instead, augmented by Los Angeles' very own Syd Straw. I love her dismissal of the interviewer's suggestion of any commonality between them and Men At Work(!) or Fleetwood Mac. | ||
