Danger In The Past and Calling From A Country Phone have both been remastered at Abbey Road and are being rereleased on vinyl and CD (it's the vinyl debut of Calling From A Country Phone, I think). The vinyl editions each come with an added 7" of b-sides and these tracks are also added to the CD versions. There are no demos or unheard outtakes, the extra tracks are ones I'm sure all of us already have. But Peter Paphides, who is releasing these on his archive label Needle Mythology says the remastering by Sean Magee at Abbey Road “dramatically revealed a depth and physicality to these recordings that casts new light on Robert’s intentions for these records. Calling From A Country Phone, in particular, is a revelation. It’s as though an invisible membrane between listener and songs has been removed.” So, I'm in. In my case I waited overnight. "Calling" is very possibly my favorite of Robert's albums and definitely my favorite of his first four. You always have to ask yourself "Am I being played for a chump?" with these offers. Well, yes, but . . . "Calling" was a relatively casual production that is probably easier to sharpen up and if I'm ordering "Calling" then of course I'll order "Danger" and I do listen to things primarily on CD but I do like the large scale covers for vinyl and the arrangement of songs as Side One and Side Two, and let's not forget those signatures on the lyric booklets and, well, it's another way to support Robert, dammit! I hadn't seen this thread, of course, when I posted my comment on the other thread. | ||

My purchase was instant. I've always hoped for a remaster of 'Danger in the past', but felt it would never happen. It is one of my favourite albums by any artist - possibly my favourite. I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed by 'Calling...' at the time of its release. I remember getting the cd single of 'Drop' before it came out and having incredibly high expectations ('Drop' and 'Falling Star' - both featured on it are highlights of the LP, while the non-LP track 'Brookfield 1975' is a great b-side). I guess I never really got on with the second side of the LP. Side 1 is very strong and I have warmed to side 2 a bit over the years. I still can't listen to the last song though ('Forever and Time'). Probably the only song of Robert's I can't. Having said that, I am really looking forwards to the remaster of this as well, particularly in light of Paphides' observations with regards to the sound. Good remasters make a hell of a difference I believe. I've said it before, but that Tallulah remaster on the box set has, for me, turned a dark star into a classic. | ||

Randy - with regards to 'being played for a chump' - I think the label is a big indicator. In this case, Needle Mythology, who are clearly run by someone who loves the music he puts out, and wants to do it in the right way (always with the involvement of the artist). Soundwise as well. We are very lucky to have Domino behind the GB box sets and Needle Mythology behind Forster's solo stuff. I really hope P.Paphides goes on to complete Robert's first quartet of solo LP's, and manages to reissue some of Grant's solo LP's as well one day. | ||

Me too, I've seemingly used it a few times before for some Underworld purchases. Is it the Townsend Music site? I'm trying to find out if the vinyl comes with downloads or if the albums will be available for streaming. Pete Paphides replied to me on Twitter to say he'd look into the streaming and let me know. Which implies to me, by omission, that there are no downloads although he didn't come out and say so. | ||

Yes, the remastering has improved the depth and detail of both albums. What I find really pleasing is how it has improves the likes of 'Leave Here Satisfied' and Heart Out to Tender' (from DITP). The latter song, especially, sounds reinvigorated on this release. | ||

Hi Burgers, no, no mp3s included. I have ordered the special pack: Both vinyl albums incl. 7", both cds and 2 signed lyrics on special paper (very nice) I ripped my cds to 320 bit/s mp3s. | ||

Thanks, I suspected that. If you got two copies of the lyrics you did well. I bought both CDs and two copies of each of the vinyl albums and only got one lyric sheet which I thought was a bit mean. | ||

I've listened to my vinyl copy of the new release of Danger in the Past, followed immediately by my vinyl copy of the original release - not all of the original, but enough. The difference is clear. The original, which I always thought was fine, now sounds flat and thin. I haven't compered my old CD of Calling from a Country Phone with the new vinyl yet, but I will soon. | ||

My Forster package arrived last Saturday. I let it sit in the corner of the living room for most of a day then peeled it to reveal all the sweet meat right before jumping in the shower. Just in case! Because "Country Phone" is my favorite of the first run of Robert's solo albums I went straightaway to the vinyl version of that. I will have to later compare its new CD to the old CD to evaluate the remaster but the vinyl is gratifyingly heavy and quiet. If the remaster is better, it's not glaringly obvious without going back to the original for comparison. I agree with Andreas' comments about "Danger in the Past." I always found the original too harsh sounding. The new one is warmer, a great improvement that I do not have to go back to my old CD to verify. I already have a CD single for "Lonely Boy" and "Brookfield 1975" but I didn't previously have "The Land that Time Forgot" and, speaking of forgetting, I forgot that I have the Mick Harvey-produced original version of "Falling Star." I received two signed lyric sheets, one for each album, i.e., "Justice" and "Falling Star." | ||

Remasters not really my thing but a track from Danger in the past popped into my weekly stream. Wonderful work. its an album i love but always think of as rather dark, the extra jangle and clarity makes everything seem lighter. Really good. Country Phone later | ||

I had some contact earlier in the year with Needle Mythology. They indicated they were working on the second two 90's solo albums and were hoping to release circa November this year. The newsletter indicates that they will be released some time next year instead. |
