Sent a quick email to Domino to find out how Volume 3 coming along. As always, quick, friendly and informative response...

We’re hard at work on it now as I type… gathering all the masters at the moment for remastering and yes much care and attention is being paid to Oceans Apart in particular.

all the best,

So, a non-distorted Oceans Apart may be on hand? I miss the old days of the Oceans Apart brickwalling wars here.

Thanks for the report Dusty!

I'll get it under any circumstances, but a master of "Ocean's Apart" with aural space and clarity will probably be a revelation. The delicate touches provided by Mark Wallis will finally sparkle.

I'm guessing "Live in London" will be included.

Anyone any ideas where the boxsets are dispatched from. I'm in Ireland and with Brexit my guess is with VAT and TAXES this will be too pricey, unless there's a distribution within the EU. Did people outside EU have issues with Vol 1 & 2.

I didn't have this problem with Vol 2 but stupidly I passed on Vol 1 so fingers are crossed for a repress.

Volume 3: What's going to be on it?
The last three albums obviously.
Live in London 2CD recording of The Barbican Concert.
B-sides:
1. Woman across the way,
2. The locust girls.
3. Haven't I been a fool (live)
4. Clouds (live)
5. Cattle & Cane (live).
6. Instant Replay
7. Taxi Taxee (Aus only release)
8. A girl lying on a beach
9. Crystal Shanks
10. Stone
11. Erotic sunshine
12. The City of Lights (Vs. Future Pilot AKA)
13. Sleeping Giant
14. Ashes on the lawn (unreleased, originally intended as Finding you b-side)
Other stuff:
There’s a very nice acoustic version of ‘The sound of rain’ from an instore in NYC in 1999 (I think!) with RF thinking out loud: “should that be included in the set, I don’t know …”.
When RF and GMcL were playing in 1999 to promote Bellavista Terrace compilation, they included a version of ‘Suicide at home’ in their duo set. The song originally appeared on Grant's project The Far Out Corporation's LP.
When the GBs were touring in 2000, they included a Go-betweenised version of Grant’s ‘One plus one’ in their set.
That’s all I can think of. Maybe there’s some radio sessions that I’m not aware of …
A nice colour poster of the GBs Mark 2 (the poster in Vol 2 was a load of Barry White. Should have been a reprint of the screenprint for Birds & Bees Tour 1988 or something similarly nice).
And there’s Vol. 3 which I have most of already but will doubtless buy anyway.

Thank you for this information fsh! I would love to hear a Go-Betweenised version of "One Plus One." It's a great song that would have boosted either "Rachel Worth" or BYBO. I'd buy it anyway but there's enough here to justify it, besides pure sentiment.

The album (The Candle And The Flame) is reviewed in Uncut. Score is 9/10.
A novel and a final G Stands boxset are following. Busy year 2023 for Robert!

There is a fantastic set Grant and Robert did for Radio B2 in Munich in May 1999 that would be wonderful in any box set. Acoustic versions of Devil's Eye, Part Company, Haven't I Been A Fool, Baby Stones, Suicide At Home, Dive For Your Memory, Right Here, Spring Rain, Clouds, Bye Bye Pride, Easy Come Easy Go, 121, Was There Anything I Could Do?

The new edition of Uncut (December 2024) says the next edition contains, amongst a lot of other things, details of archive recordings by the Go-Betweens. I’m interpreting that as Volume 3 coming in the first half of 2025.

There also apparently a picture of a blue box on the Facebook group. Like Simon I don’t do Facebook.

Uncut rates it 10/10, and the extras 9/10, with a trove of radio sessions, live cuts and demos. "Spectacular final instalment of monumental reissues series." Apparently Oceans Apart has been "sparkingly" remixed by Mark Wallis.

Here's the review, by Andrew Mueller. Apart from saying Oceans Apart - almost two decades on from the civil war that broke out here about its sound - has been "sparklingly remixed", there is no mention of what else is new, beyond saying it contains "radio sessions, live cuts and demos".

THE GO-BETWEENS
G Stands For Go-Betweens Vol 3 2000–2006 DOMINO
10/10
Spectacular final instalment of monumental reissue series

The second acts of great bands, when they happen, are usually – intentionally or otherwise – little more than evocations of nostalgia for the first. It wasn’t like that with The Go-Betweens. Robert Forster and Grant McLennan reunited under the name in the early 21st century, a decade after the group split, determined to add to their legacy rather than coast on it. They made three further albums which stood comparison with any of the previous six before McLennan’s death in 2006, aged just 48. Those three albums – The Friends Of Rachel Worth, Bright Yellow Bright Orange, Oceans Apart – are the albums showcased here, the latter sparklingly remixed by original producer Mark Wallis. They are packaged with an immense trove of radio sessions, live cuts and demos, many previously unreleased – a heartbreakingly partial answer to the question of what more we might have had from one of the greatest songwriting partnerships.

Extras 9/10: Archive photos, liner notes by Robert Forster, guest essays.

Expect a live vinyl
Acoustic gig they did in Germany for a radio program.
13 tracks - I wonder if they will squeeze it onto 1 vinyl or 2

Not sure what the attached website is but apparently the review in Mojo says

Love in Foreign Rooms' - demos recorded in Brisbane July, 1991 when it was believed that they owed a studio LP to Capitol Records - includes some songs that later ended up on "Fireboy" and "Calling from a country phone" and "new discoveries"

a May 1999 13 song acoustic set from a German radio show "Nachtmix"

"Stuck with Tape" - 2CD of demos and rough mixes

The book will include extracts from a Forster & McLennan 1995 "working film script" entitled "Sydney Creeps" - "an action comedy set on a Brisbane pineapple farm"

"The first 421 box set orders worldwide will receive a book from McLennan's personal library and a signed bookmark from Forster.

I vaguely recall the civil war but can’t find the thread. Can someone recap? There’s not a lot on Discogs and no consensus. I think I will have the Lo Max CD version. Did they send out replacement CDs? This will have been before the predominance of digital.

There was a thread a while ago about the (un)availability of Go-Betweens albums on streaming sites. Qobuz doesn’t have any of the post-reformation albums. No doubt this is a licensing issue and I suspect Volume 3 won’t change that.

I've ordered mine but was too late for the book/signed bookmark, neither of which worry me that much.

I have one of Grant's books from the first box set and numerous LPs signed by Robert, including some less common ones - Metal and Shells and Very Quick on the Eye.

I received the email from Domino at 3.02pm and had placed my order by 4.05pm - but still missed the first 400 copies, so it's sold pretty well!

I also got the email at 15:02 GMT and placed my order almost immediately and got the book. I went back at 16:00 and they’d all gone. I was lucky that I happened to check my email just as I received it. Anyone in Brisbane, for example, would have had no chance. I guess there will be some scalpers involved.

In Germany I would pay 280 euros including shipping plus three-digit customs. What a pity. I respect the price for the high-quality box, the loving design. You can feel a lot of passion. I love Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, but I'll probably pass on Vol. 3. (And I'll end up being annoyed if the box is sold out, which is what I hope for Domino). Uli :-))))

That’s a painful (re)read. I’ve dug out my copies of the Lo-Max CDs. I’ve only listened to a ripped version in recent years. I might give the original distorted CD a go.

FWiW, it’s the best of the post-reformation albums but Robert wasn’t writing as many good songs in a year as Grant by that point.

The new edition of Uncut (Kate Bush on the cover) has an album-by-album guide to the Go-Betweens with contributions from Robert, Lindy and others.

I haven’t seen any mention of downloads for Volume 3 and I’m suspicious that there won’t be any.

Have you tried contacting them to query what's up?I think you can do that specifically for download codes via 'Contact' on Domino site.

Hi everyone, young Go-Betweens fan here, new to the board. I was really disappointed with how the box set was released, waited so long for news of it's release, and then it sold out! Plus, my after-school job couldn’t stretch to the $600 price from JB HI-FI(I’d been budgeting for $300 max). Does anyone know if the downloads are only available to those who bought the box set? I’d love to hear the demos, especially of post Oceans Apart material!

On previous form you won’t be able to get downloads. There’s only 1 disc from each of Volumes 1 and 2 available to buy and so far none of Volume 3. Your best bet is probably to register your email address here and hope someone will share. There were issues with the first two sets of downloads expiring and failing and people have helped others out.

As for post- Oceans apart, I think there’s only 2 songs.

I received my copy on Monday (No book) and I have not listened to everything yet. I loved finally being able to hear multiple versions of the infamous Ashes On The Lawn, an amazing unknown (at least to me) song of Grant's titled Night Time Rising, and Grant's demo of Demon Days. I am not sure what to think of the very different re-master (re-mix?) of Oceans Apart - it is going take a couple of months.

I listened to the original version of Oceans Apart and the corrected version put out by Lo-Max a few weeks ago. I hadn’t listened to them for many years apart from Finding You. I didn’t hear anything terrible in the later tracks. Yes, the lead vocals are quite loud but I couldn’t perceive anything obviously wrong.

I listened to the downloads of the remixed album when I got Volume 3 last week. It does sound a bit different to me. The lead vocals are dialled down a bit. On Born to a Family, for example, the percussion is more prominent as are Adele’s backing vocals.

Maybe my ears are failing or maybe my Linn DSM is smoothing things out for me.

As for will it ever be released separately, I’m doubtful.

I suspect licensing is very complicated. If you look on streaming services the three studio albums from volume 2 are available.

Liberty Belle is listed as a 1996 remaster, the other 2 are 2020 remasters. All are listed as being released by Beggars Banquet. If you look at Discogs, Beggars reissued Talullah and 16LL in 2020 but not Liberty Belle. Whether these are really Beggars’ 1996 remasters or Domino’s 2019 re-remasters isn’t clear.

Beggars website is a real mess and doesn’t offer much help.

The streamers also have First Five Singles from Vol 1 (apparently released by Domino) and Fountains Of Youth from Volume 2 (apparently released by Beggars).

The first 3 studio albums appear to be pre Volume 1 versions. The last 3 albums aren’t there at all.

All-in-all a real mess.

My attempts to download the wav and hd wav files failed multiple times. I eventually got the mp3 files to download, but I've sent an email to Domino asking for another code so I can get the wavs. The same thing has happened every time with these box sets. Given how much they cost you would think they could get the downloads to work.

Mine arrived today. It's a great package. I've only played 'Oceans Apart' so far and it sounds like a different record. Much quieter and warmer than the original. I'm hearing things in the mix that I couldn't hear before such as more acoustic guitar and piano. I hope they release it as a standalone CD too. It deserves a bigger audience. Really looking forward to working through the CD's over Christmas.

One thing I've noticed is that "Darlinghurst Nights" is almost a minute shorter on the remixed/remastered version in the box. Curious, but I wonder what/if they've cut from the original OA version.

I received my set last week, and have listened to Oceans Apart a few times with comparison to the old master - it really does sound like a different record, to the point where I wonder if a few of the songs are entirely different takes. Just goes to show how impactful mixing/mastering is.

Nathaniel is correct, the new remix of Darlinghurst is 40 seconds shorter than the older. The original mix had a long, almost 50 second extended fade out and it seems the difference is that this has been cut way down. The horns really sound completely different as well. I'm sure this will vary from listener to listener, but I very much prefer the original mix of this particular song - the distortion and brick walling actually worked in this songs favor for me!

I agree with you completely Padraig, the situation with the downloads from Domino has been terrible every single time across all three releases - shameful even at "normal" prices but at this price it's unforgivable!

The Oceans Apart war can hopefully be declared over now. The new remix and remaster is fantastic. (I haven’t read the sleeve notes, so I don’t know for certain that it is both a remix and a remaster, but it must be.) As others have said, it sounds like a different album. The only track that isn’t improved is Darlinghurst Nights, which Brian above said too. But I think the new, shorter version will grow on me, as it’s the Oceans Apart song I’ve played most often, so there’s more of an ingrained familiarity to overcome. I really hope this gets a separate release. It deserves it. I’m going to put it on again. This time without holding my breath wondering if the brickwalled distortion is still there. It’s not.

That's great to know, Pádraig. Would be excellent to have this rich & beautiful work available to folk like myself who ditched their turntables decades ago. What about the rest? Any rarities or versions that really have to be heard?

I’ve listened to nothing else yet, Stuart. But Oceans Apart sounded even better on the second play, as I suspected it would without the brickwall-induced anxiety.

Stuart, i've been through the CD's a couple of times and the tracks which really stand out are 'Backstreet Drivers' (A Grant song which should really be called 'Backseat Drivers'), the various versions of 'Ashes on the Lawn' (which at times sound like something off 'The Wall') and some great early versions of tracks like 'This Nights For You'. The Larry Crane rough mixes are very good too.

Some great liner notes from Robert throughout the CD's too. He's very honest about how few songs he was writing across this period, compared to Grant who seemed to be in a rich streak. It really is a terrific box set.
