Alain Bashung--Novice From 1989, this is the earliest release of his that I have, apart from the very silly "Pizza" from 1981. This edition came in a miniature LP jacket with an interior liner also miniaturized. I had to pull out a magnifying glass to read the text where I find that the backing band includes Colin Newman! Who also arranges seven of the songs. Guest players include Blixa Bargeld, Phil Manzanera and Simon Rogers. Songs written by Bashung and one or the other of his usual collaborators at the time (Bergman or Fauque). And, yes, it is very Colin Newman-y. The line between good Bashung and not-good Bashung is before 1989. Stuart, I have not gotten the live DVD you mentioned. I will put it on the list. | ||

The Beach Boys - The Smile Sessions. Nobody could have thought this would be as brilliant as it turned out to be. And at least Brian is still alive and was involved, if this had been a posthumous release we wouldn't be so sure of its authenticity. I just bought the single CD album though, why would anybody want to sit through hours of Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villains, no matter how brilliant both songs are? | ||

The Genuis of Coleman Hawkins, Verve Master Edition. The Hawk had such rich tenor tones, and he was not afraid of the young bebobers like Diz, Bird, Monk and Bud. He embraced the new movement. The Fall - Ersatz GB The 29th studio album, extremely unlikely to even scrape the top 10 but on first listen this is ok. Pretty riffy, and some early reviews mention Black Sabbath and Rammstein!!! But relax, it just sounds like The Fall to me. Maybe MES got jealous of Uncle Lou hanging out with Metallica and thought "I'll show him". Speaking of which, some of the reviews of that album are hilarious, I saw a couple of 1/10 and even one 0/10. Knowing Lou he's probably laughing like a drain and thinking "I've screwed all you suckers again". | ||

So "Smile Sessions" are worth the bother Kevin? You're not someone I'd expect to be interested in it. I've always had a difficult time with the Beach Boys. I think "God Only Knows" is beautiful in every way but find numbers like "Sloop John B" overblown and dull and I get embarrassed for my nationality when hearing Mike Love intone lines like "She's giving me excitations." Perhaps I should spring for it. I salute you for your perseverance with the Fall. I found "Your Future, Our Clutter" to be a decent record but I still can't listen to "Reformatiion Post" without cringing. | ||

Beach Boys - Smile Sessions I've heard most of this already in various official and bootleg forms (depending on the track), but it's nice that they *finally* got around to doing this properly. The Fall album is just an ok album by Fall standards, but I always look forward to anything they release. Just got the Smile sessions this arvo. Sweeter than the 2004 incarnation. You can nearly heard the 60's afternoon sunlight on it. Instant classic. Gorgeous. Was going to get the big expensive boxset but ended up, like Kevin, with the 2 cd set. The second cd gets a bit much. I know some of the really early stuff is embarrassing Kevin. Cringeworthy in fact. But I only recently completed a 60's Beach Boys collection and "Surfer Girl" is quite good. I also rate "Summer Days (and summer nights)" too. | ||

For me it's an accident of personal history. My older brothers were first big Beach Boy fans. Even as a small child I sensed that they were squeaky clean. A neighbor friend's older sister turned me on to the Rolling Stones and that was that. Finally some rebellion! I agree with Geoff about "Summer Days and Summer Nights.". That's where Brian Wilson really hit his stride as a producer and arranger. Just ignore the lyrics. | ||

I absolutely hated the Beach Boys when I thought they were only a squeaky clean surf band. But then when I got into Microdisney, I noticed the journalists would occasionally throw out Beach Boys comparisons. Even in interviews, Cathal and Sean would gush over Pet Sounds and Smile. I had also noticed the same thing with Stereolab (with which Sean was, of course, heavily involved). But I still wasn't convinced until a friend of mine brought over Pet Sounds and the early 90s box set that contained a lot of Smile stuff, and we sat down and listened. That's what hooked me. And I could really hear how the Beach Boys influenced those bands musically, with songs like "That's Not Me," "Caroline No," "Cabinessence," and "Surf's Up." It may sound ironic, but without Microdisney and Stereolab, it would never have even crossed my mind that the Beach Boys would have anything worth hearing. | ||

I always thought The Beach Boys were a novelty act,(and I guess they were initially), and then I noticed that bands you mentioned, and others like Bobby Gillespie, Teenage Fanclub etc started talking about Pet Sounds and Smile as being masterpieces of enormous magnitude. I was amazed that people I admired really rated this band who I ranked below The Monkees, so I sounded out friends who soon put me straight to the error of my ways. I've never looked back. | ||

Triffids--In the Pines Ditch the two covers and the comparatively dull "Better Off This Way" and it's a perfect record, especially when all the original songs left in the can are stirred back in. Alain Bashung--Passe le Rio Grande From 1986. This kicks off with a big pop ballad. Almost Phil Spectorish. It's not self-produced (Nick Patrick) but everything is still co-written by Bashung. The record company obviously decided to clip the artistic freedom in the interest of selling some copies. On the two previous records, his 1982 "Play Blessures" has proven to be a real standout from start to finish. 1983's "Figure Imposee" was disappointing on first listen though there's enough willful obnoxiousness to some of the tracks, especially "Imbecile," to suggest that some of it will grow on me. | ||

I really like Dan Bejars songs on The New Pornographers albums, but he has obviously left all of his best recent material for his main band (eg Destroyer), and you should check out other Destroyer albums like Destroyers Rubies if you haven't already. Beau Brummels--Bradley's Barn I've gone and purchased the new Rhino Handmade expanded version of this underrated acoustic classic from 1968, to replace my old brittle-sounding Japanese CD. It's the Brummels final statement and a brilliant one. The sound on this record was always good and now it's just that much better. Looking forward to the second disc of extras. Some version of this album is highly recommended to David Gagen, Hugh Nimmo, Andreas Koger and possibly Geoff Holmes if you don't already have it. I would also recommend it to Pete Azzopardi were he still visiting these parts. I assume Robert Forster already has it. | ||

Hello Randy, thanks for the information. Was it one of this ''12 days of rhino'' offers? Can't remember haven't seen it there. Rhino Handmade sometimes release fine things, unfortunately they are too expensive especially for us Europeans (or maybe for any Non-US resident). Everytime I receive an E-Mail from them, I think why do they business like they do i.e. why can you buy all that beauties only in the USA. A few days ago I thought about buying their Richard and Linda Thompson release of 'Shoot out the lights'. Because of this '12 Days of Rhino'-thing it was a bit cheaper than the normal price, but with the shipping costs and the possible risk that I must go to the custom office (which have lousy opening hours for us working people. and not only this: you always waiting for hours) and pay tax and custom fees I decided not to buy. You see, buying Rhino Handmade stuff isn't easy. I think I'm away from the topic: Beau Brummels! The Beau Brummels never really made the way to my heart. I just have 'Triangle' on Vinyl and listened to it years ago for the last time. A few month ago the Rhino Handmade issue of Bradley's Barn was released and I tought about buying it. Due to the aforementioned I didn't. I will pull out Triangle right now and will give it a listen. | ||

Andreas, "Triangle" is much more orchestral than "Bradley's Barn." BB is a back-to-basics record on which there is almost NO electric instrument at all. It's possible that you don't like the distinctive voice of Sal Valentino. If that's the case, BB will still have that characteristic. I did not realize that it is so difficult to purchase overseas CDs there. If I purchase a CD from the U.K. or anywhere else in the EU it just arrives at my door without any fuss. Maybe that's why the U.S. has such a terrible trade deficit! | ||

Hi Randy, no, it isn't the voice. I like it rather (see my posting of Dec. 7th in the song of the day thread). Normally 'Triangle' must be my cup of tea. I like that kind of music of that era. And if Van Dyke Parks plays/arrange on it, it has a bonus. I relistened to it yesterday, but with the same effect as all my listening experiences before. I still like only two songs: Magic Hollow (q.e.d.: this piece has VDP on Harpsichord) and The Wolf of Velvet Fortune. When i will visit a friend of mine next time I will ask him to play Bradley's Burn (he nearly owns all of that sixties stuff) and I will gibe the Beau Brummel's a second chance. I often bought in the U.S. or Canada (mostly vinyl). Normally -it isn't a big problem. It is a German custom problem. There exists a free limit of EUR 22.00 (i.e. around USD 29/30) for the import of goods. Sometimes they take samples -if they do not belive that the enclosed goods are as cheap as mentioned on the decalartion- and if their isn't an invoice attached they do not deliver it and I have this a.m. custom problems. If I know in advance that the price is over this limit I often think about if I shall order or not. My latest Rhino Handmade order was for my a.m. friend (Percy Sledge). And we resp. he had that same troubles and costs. And as I said the Rhino Handmade stuff is expensive and the shipping costs they charge are too high (and for the custom the price of the goods plus shipping charges counts). In general (and unfortunately): Since the shipping costs from the U.S. raised, it is much cheaper to buy the import albums in Europe (due to th eafore mentioned this seems strange, but it is true) and I only buy things overseas, if i have no chance to get it in Europe - or live without it (like the Rhino Handmade CD's). | ||

It seems that amazon.co offers this stuff. Always later than the original release in the U.S. and for a price not to talk about (e.g. The Monkees Head album: also pre-order, releasing date 20 december and for GBP 41.53). Andreas, I know the Rhino website states that they cannot ship certain titles to some countries due to licensing restrictions etc. Not sure if the same thing applies to companies such as AmazonDe offering the said titles for sale. Am I correct in assuming that the €22 limit does not apply to goods imported from the U.K. and other E.U. Countries? The limit here in the U.K. is Ł18.00 ( about to be reduced to Ł15.00 I believe.) Go over that amount by even the smallest margin ( a penny ) and you run the risk of being hit with a VAT/Duty/Handling Charge. hugh, yes, you are right. the EUR 22.00 limit is only for non EU countries. i often buy in good old england (amazon.co, norman records, boomkat, honest jon's for example). this is kinda strange, because in former times i can remember, that buying records in england was an expensive thing, but nowadays it seems that most of the stuff is cheaper than in germany. btw: anna domino's east and west is one of those records i still own, despite the fact, that, when i think of selling records, east and west is always one of them, but when i listen to it again, it always find his way back to my shelf. | ||

Hex Enduction Hour--Fall I already had most of the tracks on here on "Hip Priest and Kamerads" but not everything, and it's great to hear them in their original context. BUT, this points up the problem with ordering online. I ordered the "Deluxe Edition" and--of course--I got the 2010 single CD instead. Why would somebody issue a version of the album in 2010 when a better version was already issued the year before? I figure I'll get screwed the same way if I try to order the expanded versions of "Witch Trials" and "Dragnet" (because, no, Kevin I DIDN'T get the one with "Fiery Jack"--I've never heard the studio version of that). And unfortunately my local Amoeba doesn't have these either, except for the expanded "Witch Trials" which I did see on my last visit. Grrrr. | ||

Randy, The versions I have of Hex, Dragnet and Witch Trials are all single CD's, and to call them expanded is probably an over exaggeration. The thing that marks them out is they all have a + sign after the title - eg "Dragnet +". The most generous album tracks wise is Dragnet as it has 5 extra tracks - Rowche Rumble, In My Area (which are an a and b side from July 1979), then Fiery Jack, 2nd Dark Age and Psykick Dancehall No2 (which are from a single released Jan 1980). "Dragnet +" is worth it for these tracks alone, you simply have to hear the studio version of Fiery Jack, probably the first rockabilly style Fall song ever recorded. "Witch Trials +" has 3 early singles tacked on at the end, Bingo Masters Breakout (erroneously titled Bingo Master), Psycho Mafia and Repetition. "Hex Enduction Hour +" has a paltry 2 extra tracks, the single Look Know and its b side I'm Into CB. I regard these albums as the definitive versions of these three albums, because they include the singles that were released around the same time as the albums, and they don't include any live tracks which I am averse to. There is only one live album worth owning in my opinion, and thats the Velvets Live 69. Which version of Slates do you have? Mine is called Slates Expanded Edition, and the extras are a 4 Track Peel Session (Middle Mass, Lie Dream Of A Casino Soul and C'n'C Hassle Schmuck), followed by the single Lie Dream Of A Casino Soul/Fantastic Life, and then an outtake Medical Acceptance Gate. My preference would have been to have the 4 songs from the Peel session at the end, but thats a minor gripe. | ||

Padraig, I first came across the band back in 2006 at which time I read something about them having the same name as the small town in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. I know they are based in Melbourne but I suspect they probably have some connection with the area. I have not yet heard anything from the new album ( Arches Over The Sun ) but their mini album ( Khancoban ) and debut album ( Limbs May Fall ) both of which were released on the Half A Cow label are well worth checking out. Khancoban is one of those NSW towns which are far closer to Melbourne than Sydney, so they get Victorian TV stations, Melbourne newspapers and favour Australian Rules football over rugby league. Right now I'm listening to, and very much enjoying, the Sonic Sounds 1 7" EP from 1987 in all it's crackly glory. It came free with Sounds magazine. Crazyhead, Pop Will Eat Itself, The Georgia Satellites and The Jack Rubies. First time in 23 years I've heard these songs but they sound so familiar. I must have played this record to death back in the day. Sonic Sounds 2 (The Band Of Holy Joy, The Soup Dragons, The Primitives and Voice Of The Beehive) and 3 (Head, Happy Mondays, The Triffids and Stump) to follow. The Triffids song is Everything You Touch Turns To Time, which is on the remastered edition of Calenture. | ||
