Right now, Shaun Ryder's Amateur Night In The Big Top. Presumably it was due to licensing difficulties than nothing from this appeared on his best of. A pity, it's a great record. Just before I was listening to Kate Bush's 50 Words For Snow, which I've had for a few weeks but have just finally played for the first time. It's stunning, and my records of the year list has to be reworked. And before that I was listening to Tom Waits' Bad As Me. Same deal. This also now makes my albums of the year list. | ||

Damned if I can explain why the new T. Waits grabbed me harder than other recent T. Waits (unless "Orphans" counts). He plows such a narrow field sometimes it takes a bunch of listens to identify a great one as opposed to one that's simply really good. After quite a lot of spins, I think "Bad As Me" might be my favorite thing he's done in a long time, maybe since "Rain Dogs." I think the short songs have something to do with it. From what I've read, we have Kathleen Brennan to thank for that. | ||

no sound from africa this evening, just music from south of the mason dixon line: allman brothers band - suny at stonybrook 9/19/71 thanks to michael for his reminder. today the cd arrived. the sound quality is lousy, nevertheless it is a pleasure to listen to the band and to duane's and dickey's guitar playing in particular. btw: my first abb album was 'wipe the windows, check the oil, dollar gas'. i not only loved the sounds thereon, i also loved the title of the album and the artwork of the cover. and still, do, even when the recordings are from a period after duane's death. | ||

while i still listening to the second disc of the a.m. suny cd i read the liner notes in the booklet i feel ashamed about the fact that i always just talk about duane and eddy. the writer notes ''the dual syncopated drumming of jaimoe and butch trucks''. and he is damned right. this drumming of the both is a highlight and makes the abb sound, too. | ||

Got the Smiths Complete (CD set only) for an Xmas present from the wife. Finally got around to listening to it, starting with the debut, and I agree with a post of Kevin's from eons ago that the remastering of this one is a big improvement. It's a bit louder, but not "brickwalled," and it's got a bit of a fuller, less anemic, more immediate sound, overall. Hopefully the rest of the CDs will sound as nice as this one does. Rhino did a nice job with this, too, as far as the mini-LP replica sleeves and the overall package. This set is a really sweet deal, too. My wife paid 40 euro for it, including shipping, and Rhino UK is now parting these CDs out individually at 7 pounds a pop, which converted to euros would total about 68,00 or so. | ||

Randy, though I've played and treasured my Hollies Greatest Hits and the Evolution album many times over the years, this is my first exposure to the two above, and I'm unsure why it took me this long. It also again makes me cringe at what happened afterwards - members of three excellent groups (granted, in two cases it was the most helium-headed members) get together and perpetrate CSN, one of the biggest ego trips on this or any planet. | ||

Allen, for years and years I would just foam at the mouth about CSN. I still can't get into listening to them but I'm much more forgiving now about their reasons for being. I understand that Graham was probably never going to be taken seriously as a singer/songwriter in the U.K. with the Hollies. It's not because of any fault with the band--they provided wonderful takes of Nash' songs, armed with all of the skills that pop discipline had honed for them. And the vocal mix of Nash, Clarke and Hicks was both open and sparkling. The late 8 track recordings they did in their final year were breathtaking. But nobody who mattered was going to listen to "Stop Right There" or "Tell Me to My Face" or "Postcard" or "Butterfly", all world-class songs. They weren't going to figure out that the Hollies' collaboratively-written songs like "Pay You Back with Interest" and "Rain on the Window" and "Charlie & Fred" were not just bubblegum. The Hollies were in a mental box with the audience and the critics alike, and they were unlikely to escape. In CSN, Nash could press on with songs that were in every way just like what he'd been doing with the Hollies, albeit with less well-matched voices and instruments (though Stills was certainly no slouch as a player). In CSN, people listened to what he was offering. Whereas after Nash left, the Hollies whipsawed between rebellion against and capitulation to their fate. Sometimes the results were a bit sad, as on the cabaret-ish numbers on "Hollies Sing Hollies." Sometimes they were superb, like the haute bubblegum masterpiece "Confessions of The Mind" or the raggedly self-produced "Distant Light" or the CSN-inspired "Romany", recorded during Allan Clarke's walkabout. For Crosby, the Byrds seemed to have run their course. They were still trying to find their place in the post-Top 40 world at the end of the '60s. For all Crosby could tell they were finished commercially. There's certainly no way Crosby would have accepted Gram Parson or Chris Hillman's move toward country. And yes, Crosby was a world class a$$hole as a person; it's amazing he lasted in the band so long. In the case of the astonishing Buffalo Springfield, they were already flying apart. Stills, Young and Furay had such different ideas about what they wanted to do and they didn't seem to have the inclination to compromise them enough to maintain that magical intersection of their disparate talents that the first two Springfield albums showcase. And they all made bucketloads of money with CSN and CSNY so Graham can pursue photography. Now, I am listening to the Walkmen's "Lisbon." This is a great album, full stop. It amazes me how much Hamilton Leithauser reminds me of Augie March's Glenn Richards. As promised I picked up a copy of Phosphorescent's "Here's To Taking It Easy." On first listen I hear some promise but I also hear a weirdly crowded instrumental backing and a writer who seems to occasionally enjoy taking his lyric hook and beating it senseless with repetition a la Lucinda Williams. I also picked up a copy of "Pride" so I'll see how that one sounds. I was really annoyed to find that none of the albums (at Amoeba anyway) had the Phosphorescent song that lit me up so much this morning ("Full Grown Man"). | ||

I have to say that the new Bats album ("Free All the Monsters") is scoring very well with me. The Bats are hard to explain to anybody who doesn't like them. They're very low key and unassuming. Sometimes they can fall into monotony. But this new album is well considered. There are little fills and musical decorations here and there, the recorded sound is warm and dense (probably more of Dylan's "too much sound") and the songs are well crafted. It's very much a "purty guitar" record. I'm also really enjoying Robert Scott's latest solo album, "Ends Run Together." He's going through a good phase. | ||

I bought it on the basis of descriptions of them as country-rock and some occasional association with the Pigram Brothers who I rate. The first song "Smooth Sailing" sounds more like Stevie Wright was the inspiration. Except Stevie Wright had Vanda/Young watching his back. Americans would be thinking of Rod Stewart with the vocals. | ||

Jeff, on one listen I'd put it on the shelf with "Bringing Home the Ashes." Definitely not the classic Wild Swans but not rubbish. It seems to have a lot more creative energy to it than Phil Wilson's 2010 album "God Bless Jim Kennedy" which lacks the inspiration of the June Brides or Wilson's post-June Brides solo recordings. When I load it up on the computer I'll send some tracks to you to see for yourself. | ||

Stuart, Glad you like it. There is very little information online relating to The Desert Wolves and even less about The Vermont Sugar House. As far as I can tell, The Desert Wolves were only in existence for about 12 months ( 1987 into 1988 ) during which time they recorded two singles ( 7"/12" ) for the Ugly Man label in Manchester. The lineup was Martin King ( Vocals/Guitars ) David Platten ( Guitars ) Nick Platten ( Guitars ) Richard Jones ( Bass, Trumpet ) and Craig Winterburn ( Drums.) Firestation Records of Germany and Clarendon Records of the U.S.A. collected together these tracks, a couple of unreleased songs and a song from a compilation album and put them out on CD under the title 'Pontification' in 2000. Firestation Records released 'Carlton Gardens' by The Vermont Sugar House in 2008 and then in 2009 Firestation/Clarendon released 'Pontification Plus Four' on CD ( 13 tracks in total.) There is very little information on the cd insert but I have a feeling that at least some of the tracks on 'Carlton Gardens' may have been recorded as early as 2000. This is either my third or fourth listen to this Torch Division album. It's unquestionably excellent. It's amazing how often Astor makes me think of Grant McLennan in his stoner music period (with Kilbey). But don't expect Jack Frost because there's definitely no Steve Kilbey here. | ||

Stuart, sometimes the throwaway prices for good albums amaze and depress me. Yes it's worth the 98p. My experience with Pete Astor is that usually about 50% to 60% of the songs on a Weather Prophets album or one of his solo albums are good. He's a good writer with good pop instincts. But usually, there'll be some dull numbers. "The Wisdom of Harry" just moves right along from one good track to the next. Having just survived this Go Betweens board malfunction--phew!--I realize I'd better do what I've been avoiding. I don't like using our sacred board for self-promotion. Some of you might be wondering where Rob, Padraig and Kevin got some of my music. I sent CDs to them. I've been sending members email messages in the background to see if they want a copy but some of the email addresses are not current and, well, this damn site almost did the disappearing act. For example, I really don't think any of the addresses I have for Michael Bachman are valid. So, anybody who wants a copy can send me a message at my email address. The one on my profile is correct for me. If I don't respond, assume that the email got lost somehow because I'm not going to ignore anybody. But be patient; I make these things up by hand. This is not something that costs you money, btw. | ||

Ah, that's a relief, I thought it was something to do with my server in Italy! Bought the Wisdom of Harry and another Pete Astor project, Ellis Island Sound, for around the same price. Meanwhile he seems to have a new album called Songbox coming out in the near future, which apparently is a return to "real" songs. As someone who still thinks, to the derision of my muso friends, that Almost Prayed is one of the greatest songs ever written, I'm happy to hear that. |
