Cali - Pensons a l'avenir

Very pretty little duet with a nice bit of drum business.

Velvet U - New age (Live 1969)

I've never understood why Lou changed this great, poetic lyric for the rather crap one on Loaded...

Roger McGuinn's cover of Dylan's "Up to Me" from his 1976 LP "Cardiff Rose." Production by Mick Ronson. Imaginative playing by all involved, a great piece of record-making.

The Wake - Talk About The Past

Fac 88 and piano by Vini Reilly

As noted elsewhere this is very New Order-ish, with just a slightly more cheery vocal. I'd swear that there is even a Melodica in there !

New drive-belt found for the turntable, so going through some 45s I've not played for a while!

Ben Vaughn Combo - My First Band

45 on Edinburgh's "53rd and 3rd" label, but licenced from Telstar from Hoboken NJ. Mid 80's, very Modern Lovers but a whole lotta fun!

Let's face it any record with a 'Lonsesome Bob' on '69 Rambler Hubcap is going to have some charm...

Berntholer - My suitor

Peel once promised on air he'd send me a copy of this, but he never did, the old bugger... how wonderful to find it on Youtube!! Ah those long Swedish nights with that warm laconic voice muttering through the ether with wit and life-saving music...

The Visitors - Incomptability

45 from '81 on Edinburgh's Rational Records

A very dark + intense thrash, a bit Go4ish. Featuring the McVey brothers, whom were omnipresent in the local music scene at the time and who appeared to us mere mortals as the coolest men alive...wonder where they are now?

The Wake - The Old Men.

On another thread I compared the album Harmony by The Wake to New Orders Movement album, although Harmony is infinitely superior imo.
This track sums it up, it has every single Joy Division/New Order angle covered. From the Curtis /Barney lyrics and vocal, the Barney guitar, the doubled tracked bass (or maybe 2 bassists - who knows), the eerie vintage analogue keyboard/synth sound (the sound that makes you think that that this machine is about to break down any minute) and it even sounds like Steven Morris must be on drums. It shouldn't work, but somehow it does even though I have never heard a band mimic another band so shamelessly.
Maybe if Movement had been an amazing album and hadn't been such a crushing disappointment(well it was to 19 yr old me)I wouldn't be so generous in my praise of The Wake. But after the two early singles Ceremony/In A Lonely Place and Everythings Gone Green/Procession, Movement was incredibly poor. New Order of course moved on dramatically sound wise, leaving the little old Wake to steal (but build) on their basic sound, even if it was only to a few thousand souls.

Poptones - PIL

Truly unique, brilliant and groundbreaking.

And the way it just suddenly bursts into Careering at the end with no pause for breath is fantastic.

Atlas sound - My angel is broken

Love the overall sound of this, just wish he'd done something a bit different with the chorus.

Mighty wah - story of the blues

If I'd joined a band back in the 80s...and if I could've written just one song... and if I'd had a kitchen sink handy... this would've been the one.

The Pogues : Haunted

Another 45 from the Schweppes boxes. Bought for 10p I think from a record shop just off St Andrews Sq in Edinburgh, which was a treasure trove for great bargains. Can't remember its name, but a lot of my 45 rpms came from there.

Vocals from Caitlin O'Riordan and sounding fairly un-Pogues like. More like a Velvets thrash in fact. I never knew until recently that Shane had recorded a version with Sinéad O'Connor, but this version is better.
