List 3 "consecutive" albums by an artist which you consider to be classics.
I knicked this idea from Drive By Truckers messageboard.

I'll start off with Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years by Tom Waits

I'll be captain obvious and list Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154.

But also...

Wonderful & Frightening World, This Nation's Saving Grace, and Bend Sinister by you know who.

And...

Brilliant Trees, Gone to Earth, and Secrets of the Beehive by David Sylvian.

Nice ones, Jerry - all three of them. For me, with Taking Heads, you can even do 77, More Songs, and Fear.

Nick Drake: Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter, Pink Moon.

Smiths: Meat is Murder, Queen is Dead, Strangeways.

I posted this same topic on another forum and was surprised to see somebody venture this:

2nd Hand Daylight++Correct use Of Soap++No Thyself [Magazine]

Interesting choice, and that must be the longest gap between three "classic" albums ever?

Jeff, I'm guessing you don't really rate Meat Is Murder above the debut, but its more the fact you want to include Strangeways in your trifecta?

I would also put forward Drive By Truckers three albums from last decade - Decoration Day, The Dirty South, Brighter Than Creations Dark.

My trifecta by The Fall would be Dragnet, Grotesque and Hex.

I would agree with Padraig on The Stones, but you could also have Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers.

REM - Murmur, Reckoning, Fables etc

Husker Du - Flip Your Wig, Candy Apple Grey, Warehouse Songs and Stories.

I'll second the REM and go for the obvious. I know there are some non-Beatles fans here but Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt Peppers isn't a shabby trio...

Somewhat tragically you could include Nick Drake's entire career: Five Leaves Left, Bryter Later, Pink Moon.

Trou - great call on the Cure. (When I spoke with Robert Smith years ago - shameless name drop!! - he said 17 Seconds and Pornography were his favourites. They were the two I was getting signed. (My brother was videoing an interview with him at Jane Seymour's house in Bath where they were recording, and I went along as location assistant. Robert couldn't have been nicer. Happy days!)

And going back a bit further: Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow, After Bathing at Baxter's and Crown of Creation is a trio of classics.

Is it because we're on the Go Betweens' board that nobody mentions them? Before Hollywood, Spring Hill Fair and Liberty Belle certainly qualify in my book. Trouble is, the run continues for Tallulah, which I seem to like a lot more than some other folks, and Kevin's big favorite 16 LL.

I've been too lazy to think about candidates for this. Maybe this weekend.

I don't know if I'll get away with this one, but here goes

Raw Power/The Idiot/Lust For Life.

Well they are all credited to the artist Iggy, Raw Power is Iggy and The Stooges mind you.

Captain Beefheart is a major artist who couldn't quite string 3 great albums in a row together (or could he? - see below **).
The closest he came was Shiny Beast, Doc At The Radar Station and Ice Cream For Crow. Shiny Beast is a classic, the other two are really good but not great.

**Safe As Milk, Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals Off Baby would be a great trifecta, but a glance at his discography shows that what look like inferior "cash in" albums were released in between. From an artistic point of view maybe these three should be allowed to count?

Kevin, I *do* rate Meat is Murder over the debut. I love all four of the Smiths' studio albums, but the debut is the one I love the least, if that makes sense.

If we could include EPs, I would say: Chronic Town, Murmur, and Reckoning. I like Fables, but I don't like it *enough* to feel that it should be included in some classic trifecta.

Randy, I agree with your Go-Between trifecta. I definitely think Before Hollywood, Spring Hill Fair, and Liberty Belle are their three best albums.

Here are some others:

Momus: Circus Maximus, Poison Boyfriend, Tender Pervert

Siouxsie: Kaleidoscope, Juju, A Kiss in the Dreamhouse

Iron Maiden: Iron Maiden, Killers, Number of the Beast

Magazine: Real Life Secondhand Daylight, Correct Use of Soap

The Chills: Kaleidoscope World, Brave Words and Submarine Bells. Three albums that I still listen to regularly, and which have some great songs by the troubled Martin Phillipps (who's due to support John Cooper Clarke in at the Dunedin Fringe next week, apparently. But Bath UK to Dundein is a long way to go for a gig...).

I think it needs to be proper albums, thats all I would consider anyway. Maybe give a bit of leeway if it was a compilation of songs unavailable on any other albums. I think The Wedding Present and Ash released singles on a monthly basis and then compiled them all on an album later on (not that I'm suggesting either of these two albums are classics - far from it)

So it's a comfortable shoe-in for The Associates - Affectionate Punch, Fourth Drawer Down & Sulk

The Gun Club - Fire Of Love, Miami, Las Vegas Story

Belle & Sebastian - Tigermilk, If Your Feeling Sinister & The Boy With The Arab Strap

3 very different trifecta's all coming from the heart of leftfield.

While Kaleidoscope World might be a compilation, it is a pretty unusual one, in that it's the first album of any sort the Chills released (not a live album, mid-career or post-career round-up). I bought it in the 1980s (I've got it on vinyl and CD) before I even knew it was a compilation.
Jerry - Belle and Sebastian's first three, how could I forget those?!

Fourth Drawer Down is a perfect example of an album that isnt really an album, but a collection of singles. This album definitely counts in my book.

The first 3 Hendrix records ?

Are You Experienced ?
Axis:Bold as Love
Electric Ladyland

What is amazing about the 3 Fairport releases that Cosmo picked is that all 3 were issued within the same year (1969), and also that before "Liege and Lief" the group were involved in a terrible road accident that killed their drummer. Somehow they came through that and created the record that really defined British folk-rock.

I don't have the first Gillian Welch record, but I would go for

Time (The Revelator)
Soul Journey
The Harrow and the Harvest

I just wish that she would occasionally again go down the direction of the more abstract "I Dream A Highway": 14 perfect minutes
