Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball. Dude's pissed, and the righteous anger does him a world of good. Here's betting some Repub misapprehends "We Take Care of Our Own" and turns it into a campaign song.

Padraig, Another young Scottish band for you to check out. To date they have only released a few singles, eps and a cassette. Most of their early releases are sold out but you can download some of the material for free on Bandcamp.

Chromatics - Kill For Love

Fronted by the brilliantly monikered Johnny Jewel, and released on his own record label - the fabulously named Italians Do It Better.

You can hear the album here.

The lead off track and 2nd single is a version of Into The Black by Neil Young

Blue In Heaven - Across My Heart 12". The Martin Hannet-produced version of the track on the b-side is very different. It sounds almost unbelievably like Joy Division.

Is it not quite released yet? It's not even on amazon.co.uk.

The iPod pitched up "Angie Says" the other day. That is such a wonderfully poignant song. While all Monochrome Set is underrated, people seem to really forget what they did during the '90s.

Only played it through once Randy before my wife pinched it and took it to her shop. I ordered from their website, it arrived within 2 days. Sounding like classic Monochrome Set but no absolute belters on first listen and havent had time to take in the lyrics. I am going to see them on Saturday in Bristol and very much looking forward to it

Have spent some time with the Monochrome Set album now Randy and am happy to report that it's pretty good. A little loose in places but generally it's great to have them back. Bid had a stroke and clearly that's been a big influence, there are ruminations on death and treatment throughout the lyrics and even in the title (Platinum Coils are used to treat aneurysms). Lester Square's guitar still sounding 60s and clean and Bid's voice and delivery still a pleasure

while writing my post about the talk talk vinyl reissues i listened to the samples. thanks for the tip, cosmo. especially the first sample sounds like good old Monochorme Set. i also took notice that they will tour. unfortunately the ywill be in berlin on april 20, 12. this is so typically: on this day i will go to the motorpsycho concert (and i was already disappointed when i took notice that the great ''kammerflimmer kollektief'' will be playing on the same day in berlin).

Basically anything by The Cure from the debut album (sort of) Boys Don't Cry, up to and including the Staring At The Sea comp (but I am omitting Head On The Door which I think came out just prior to the comp - never rated Head On The Door and the albums that came after it).
I always liked early Cure, bought all the albums and singles, and saw them live as well.
I don't know if I'm pining for a long lost youth or not, but these records just sound great to me just now. It seems every second album I put on these days is one of these early albums. After the comp I kind of lost interest in what they were coming up with, although you could always rely on them to release killer singles.

Padraig, I have a couple of later releases, "It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You the Best" which was recorded in '67 and '68, and "In My Own Time" from 1971. I have not heard anything from before that. She took the singing voice of a homeless woman and made it beautiful.

Stuart, I'm only on the third song of "Vers les lueurs" so far. "Contre un Arbre" is flat-out astonishing. And the next two are not letting me down either. Woodwinds and rock band!

Kevin, no Disintegration? For me, it is their last good album, and it's actually quite good. Very moody and melodic. Nice sonic textures. But I draw a solid line after Disintegration. I really don't like anything they did after that.

I like Head on the Door, too. It's their pop album.

Also, their b-sides from '79-'85 are largely great. I especially love the tracks from the Walk EP.

Jeff, maybe I will check out these. I just preferred the angular spiky pop songs they did, and the stately Faith. It all became a bit dreary after Head On The Door as I remember it, but who knows I may be surprised at what I hear.

Randy, I think it starts out so well that the middle tracks take a little longer to absorb, as does the nine-minute penultimate track. But when the whole thing kicks in, it kind of takes your breath away. It's just a beautiful, beautiful piece of work.

Randy Adams - New Runes

As mentioned in his email, his influences do poke their heads in, but there's still plenty of room for his own voice, and a very complex, wise and funny one it is indeed. Recommended...

Thanks, Allen.

Tonight I pulled out the Bats' "Guilty Office" for probably it's first full listen start to finish in a couple years. It's been loaded onto my iPod since I got it back in 2008 and songs from it bounce up now and then but that's not a proper way to listen to an album, of course.

I remember basically liking this album and tonight's hearing reinforces that. I think it has a nice collection of traditional Bats-style songs. In other words, if you like basic Bats this record should satisfy. If you find the Bats boring or too much of the same thing, you will give this album the same criticism. Compared to "Free All the Monsters" it's a much less produced-sounding album and that might be off-putting to some. It strikes me as more of a folkie album than their better-known earlier records, though I'd say all the Bats' records are folkie records at their core.

Scarlett's Well--Strange Letters

The new Monochrome Set CD showed up at my door impossibly soon after my order, along with the first Scarlett's Well album as I inexplicably never got around to checking them out.

I decided to listen to Scarlett's Well first. Bid writes most of the songs but lets one or another of three female singers handle the vocals on most of them. Orson Presence is part of the lineup and contributes writing. There's a "thank you" to Lester Square but he's not identified as a player. It's nice to see this evidence of their amicable relations after giving the Monochromes a rest after "Trinity Road."

I must say, the music really matches the cover art--very ornate and pretty.

Finally played Disintegration by The Cure. Not for me I'm afraid. Jeff describes it as moody, I prefer morose, and while that is probably just splitting hairs Jeff's comment was meant as a compliment which is fair enough. Smiths vocals and lyrics just appear banal and gloomy for the hell of it, and he sounds about as interested in the songs as I am. Some good songs obviously (Lovesong, Lullaby, I would have said Pictures Of You but not the overlong version here), but overall I find its not an album thats easy to enjoy. And I've always hated Fascination Street, no idea why but some songs we just never get on with and thats one of mine.
To sum up, its obviously not a terrible album because too many Cure fans and critics deem it to be their pinnacle. I just prefer the early Cure, The Cure of spiky pop songs, and even the "moody, morose and gloomy" stuff that was on Faith because at least then Smith really was an angsty, just out of his teens guy at that point, nearly a full decade before Disintegration.

Dominique A -- Vers les lueurs

I've been popping this into the car stereo and even the box in my office at work but those conditions necessarily involve a lot of distraction and time limits. At the end of the evening last night, after the timers on the house lights had clicked them all off, I stretched out on the couch and donned the headphones (damn, the right cup lead is getting really dodgy on this otherwise magnificent set of Stax phones!), and gave the entire 57 minute album a proper all-at-once listen. This is a great album, quite bracing from someone who is 20 years from his first album. Unlike most of the other Dominique A albums I have this one has a very all-of-a-piece feel to it like it was planned and arranged carefully but then played and recorded over a very short set of sessions. I have to assume that his new live shows consist primarily of just playing this album in the same song order with pretty much the same instrumentation.

I was struck by how many songs (such as "Rendez-nous la lumiere") that I could easily imagine Francoiz Breut doing. Of course, she did a lot of Dominique A in her early period.

Stuart, I didn't personally have the early-listening experience of sensing a loss of steam in the middle unless maybe the relatively quiet "Loin du soleil" might be said to have that effect. And I never objected to the length of "Le convoi" because it has no filler. (Similarly, I've always found Bashung's 9 minute "Comme un lego" to be very effective and ditto Dylan's classic long songs like "Desolation Row" and "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.") But 57 minutes is a demanding length of time for an album if you're the scattered semi-manic multi-tasking type that I am.

The combination of guitar rock band and florid woodwinds--Rock and Ravel!--is original yet somehow quintessentially French and it really works.

I'm very excited; this is a 2012 release and it's fresh but also timeless and brilliant. I don't get that luxury very often. I wish I understood French so I could get the lyrics but being an anglophone is no reason not to buy a copy of this album in a big hurry. F^&k Pitchfork and the Word and Mojo, etc. THIS is what's happening now.

The Scarlets Well stuff is patchy Randy but there are some gems on all of the albums and I definitely approve of the eccentric and as you say ornate vision that Bid has created for the band . I saw them play in London and had to admire him for surrounding himself with renaissance babes. The later Scarlets Well albums get closer to Monochrome Set in sound. Bid is definitely one of my heroes

The Shins - Port of Morrow
This is a crack at the big time - hardly the quirky uni pop of yore.
Skulldisco will really hate this, even more than the first ones!
As expected, I am quite liking it on first listen very much.

The Shins single from Port of Morrow is great. The rest of it I havent heard.
The first two Shins albums are great, the 3rd was average at best.

R.E.M. - Reckoning Deluxe 2 Disc Edition

Hard to believe that Reckoning is 28 years old. Reckoning was the first R.E.M. album I bought the first week of it's release. I bought Chronic Town a year after it was released and Murmur a few months after it was released.

Got the Actress album through the post yesterday, but I didnt finish work till 7pm so no real time to hear it all the way through, liked what I heard though. Working 7am-7pm today again so probably be tomorrow before I get a chance to really digest it. Some cracking reviews so far.

Great lake swimmers - New wild everywhere

Felt I had to buy something at Ferrara's Last Surviving CD shop, though at 20 euros a pop I can't see it lasting much longer either. This was in the window and since I loved Lost channels seemed like a possible goodie. Unless it's a slow grower, though, this just sounds a bit dull so far: beautifully played and sung, but without an ounce of inspiration or interesting idea in sight.

any stewart/pop group fans out there?

the man seems angry as ever. the first song is a killer. the rest, hmmmm, i don't know. it isn't another 'as the veneer of democracy starts to fade', but that was nearly thirty years ago.

Allo Darlin' - Europe

Not only does she cover "Dive For Your Memory" on the bonus EP she refers to her sound as "Kirsty MacColl meets the Go-Betweens" and has a song on the new one about a road trip with the line "You found a tape with "Tallulah" on it. Yeah, such devotion certainly doesn't guarantee she'll capture even an ounce of the Go-Bee magic, but I think she approaches it - lovely, tuneful, thoughtful, catchy...I've played it twice in a row already.

Lee Renaldo - Between the Times and the Tides

I wouldn't have expected the best solo album by an SY member to come from Lee, swell guy though he is. But here you go. A little more trad than SY, but every tune has some touch, some build, some guitar fill that reminds you where Renaldo got his paycheck these last 30 years. One of my fave albums of the young year.

This Spotify malarkey is a good way of checking out records you dont have and would like to hear. I played Lee Renaldos album on there yesterday, not bad Rob but on first listen I think it doesn't live up to Thurston Moores solo album from last year.
Will play Digital Ash on Spotify next. I bought this the day it came out, played it twice, thought it was rubbish and promptly traded it at a record store.

something of a return to form, I havent rated the last couple of albums at all but this is definitely listenable. I wish Anton would stop playing the drums though, their live drummer is brilliant but never seems to play on the albums

Kevin, if you hated it originally you'll still hate it now. But I stand by my assessment of it. Meanwhile . . . .

Aztec Camera -- High Land, Hard Rain

I never bought this record, as a friend of mine flogged it endlessly back when it was current. I'm not a fan but I like about half of the songs and it's definitely worth having. Too bad his version of "Bad Education" wasn't appended onto the CD.

You were right Randy, poor mans Radiohead if you ask me, he should stick to the more trad stuff he is renowned for. I know I like some singers that are not technically brilliant, but his vocals are just dreadful!! He does strike me as being a really talented guy, but some music/musicians we just dont get on with and he is one of mine.

The Sound - Jeopardy.

Since a yearly significant date is fast approaching, I thought I'd treat myself to 2 very rare(i.e. deleted) and hence expensive cds. The first one arrived today and is VERY good. I think even skulldisco would find it interesting although not one of the persons behind it: "Rushes" by The Fireman. Came out in 1998 and I only found out about it a couple of years ago. iTunes calls it electronica though it's more something you'd hear in a rave chill room (I'd imagine). Very unlike the Fireman's alter ego stuff! Nice!
Now I'll just have to wait a bit longer for Wonderwall music to arrive - it was even more expensive.

Dominique A -- La Musique

This is his 2009 album. It's more keyboard and digital oriented as contrasted with the electric guitars, bass, drums and woodwinds on the new album. Not the masterwork that is "Vers les lueurs" but a very good solid album so far (on track 6 of 12).

Inspired by the recent feature in Mojo, I'm listening to Paul Weller's Kosmos Sxdub 2000, which was a b-side on the Sunflower CD single. I'm listening to it via YouTube as I don't have that single, it isn't on any album and iTunes also doesn't have it. It's great and I'd happily buy it if it were available anywhere that I can find, but it's not. So, can anyone help me out with an mp3?

Padraig, I do not own a copy of the Paul Weller single so I cannot help out but you may be able to pick up a used copy ( 7"; 12"; cdsingle ) at Discogs. Might be worth checking with the Seller to make sure that it contains the track you are after before placing an order.

http://www.discogs.com/Paul-Weller-Sunfl ower/master/80379

I really like the Underground Lovers. The only album I do not have is 'Cold Feeling.' I think it must have had a limited release as it was no longer available by the time I found out about it. If you ever see a used copy on your travels, grab it for me.

Link to a video of the band performing Your Eyes ( Remix ) which originally appeared on 'Leaves Me Blind.'

Currently listen to 'All Blackshirts To Me' by Cats On Fire who hail from Finland.

Padraig, I missed the Jeb Loy Nichols mention above until just now...how is the album. I saw him do a great set opening for Kasey Chambers 11 years ago and enjoyed a couple of his albums from that period, but haven't heard anything since then.

Allen, he is still recording and releasing records. The following is a link to his website.

http://www.jebloynichols.co.uk/

The albums he recorded with Fellow Travellers ( a mix of folk, country, reggae and dub ) between 1990 and 1994 are well worth checking out if you are not already familiar with the band.

Currently listening to 1234 - The Early Singles ( 1986 - 1989 ) by Rumblefish.

Thanks Hugh...I had a couple of the Fellow Travellers albums back then, too. Should see if I still have them somewhere.

The Nada Surf album really is terrific, isn't it Austin. I played it twice in a row on my iPod over the weekend. It has been a very long time since I last played an album twice in a row.

Allen, the song I mentioned above was a free download from Jeb Loy Nichols' website. I have one of his albums from the 90s and I remember liking it a lot at the time. It got some terrible reviews though, which I think was due to its hybrid sounds, as detailed by Hugh above.

Lightships - Electric Cables
this is gorgeous stuff, thanks to Kev for the heads up on this Gerard Love from Teenage Fanclub project, vocals are lovely as you would imagine but the guitars are sublime, very textured, woozy, psychy, lots of interesting effects. Really strong melodically

The Feelies - Real Cool Time: 35 Years of Covers

Put together by the friendly fellow at the Gloom & Doom From the Tomb blog. 2 1/2 hours that I haven't gotten to the end of yet, but am enjoying a great deal so far...nearly every song holds up well to the Feelization process.

Allen, what's the sound quality like? I have little patience with poorly recorded bootlegs.

Listening to The Pursuit Of Happiness.

Smashing Pumpkins live - Oceania from their new album!

Never thought they could come back to form but I like this song, even if it is a bit pink floydish

Padraig, each song is from a different source, so the sound ranges widely from nicely crisp and clear to not-crisp-and-clear-but-not-approaching- muddy. Depending on your level of interest I'd say it could be worth weeding your way through.

Thanks Allen.

Right now I'm listening to the rather excellent electo pop (ie New Order-ish) of Alpine's Zurich EP. They're from Melbourne I think.

Saint Etienne - Words and Music

I can't remember if I'm the only one here still following these folks, but they have a new one, the first in 7 years. At first listen I like it just fine, and will probably like it more as time goes on.

Allen, I still listen to Saint Entienne. It's almost 20 years since I was intoduced to their music on Nightlines, a great CBC Radio 2 weekend program hosted by David Wisdom. DW was my favorite rock DJ ever.

Good blog post about the Loveless reissue, including a choice bit of a Kevin Shields interview:

thepowerofindependenttrucking.blo gspot.com/2012/05/mbv-love less-2012-remasters.html

Haven't gotten to that set yet - am still enjoying the EP/rarities collection. I have no plans to sell my original copies of the EPs, though, as they also work so well as individual entities, and the covers/packages are lovely little works of art.

The Soundtrack of Our Lives - Throw it to the Universe
I love this band, massively underrated, think they are calling it a day too which is a real shame. I am going to get to one of their scandinavian dates to catch them before the split as they are awesome live

My Bloody Valentine - EPs 1988-1991

How depressing that the contents of this release are the most challenging, innovative , original and exciting music I've heard in almost the whole time since they were originally released.
When historians of the future look back on rock music of the last 20 years its going to be a very short chapter in the book.

I can't go with you on the state of the last 20 years, but I'll endorse all of your adjectives regarding the music, and add "beautiful" and one I've never seen applied to these folks but which is coming up again and again for me: fun. And not in just the obvious places, like where the guitars in "Honey Power" almost turn into cartoons, but even in their gloomier and more darkly piledriving moments there's an amazing lightness to this stuff.
