Wisdom of Harry - Chicken

I somehow got the impression that Pete Astor's later solo work was all weird electronic experimentation, but the album this is from is just a great sequence of VU-influenced rock songs, very Weather Prophets in other words. This one has a particularly lovely dark guitar bit on it. As I mentioned elsewhere, 98p on Amazon. Ridiculous.

Changed my mind. Song of the day is, of course, You Get What You Give by the New Radicals. I heard it in the supermarket earlier and it has now cropped up on iTunes.

The Waterboys - Glastonbury Song. Such a joyously wonderful pop song. iTunes tells me the last time I played it was on new year's eve 2009. I must have played it on CD or iPod since then though, surely. I can't have gone two years, three months and six days since last playing this.

Dominique a - le convoi

Nine minute epic that after the first few listens lodges irrevocably in the heart and mind. The instrumentation is stunning throughout the new album, a sort of wind quintet plus guitars.Glorious.

theoretical china. oh, how i loved that song! that was my first thought after reading jeff's post. like so many other records i also sold my winston tong records.

but the web can help:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32UlbOinJ Uk

still nice, but a ''deep in the eighties song/sound''.

while talking about winston tong i nearly forgot why i am here.

that is my song of the day:

father john misty - Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tHJB9Po_ Hc

the ex- fleet foxes member does a great job. especially the opening hits you like the beat on the hi-hat, the noisy guitar and the reverberant voice singing ''jesus Christ, girl....''. the video isn't bad, too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONIJXHvoy nw

if you listened to the Dean Blunt/Inga Copeland stream which i have posted you will recognize that they have covered this song.

amazing song! the other two songs on can listen to on you tube ('good times' and 'give me a chance') are good, too.

it seems that this album is a rare gem.

Big Red Bus - Cathedral Walls

U.K. band who released a couple of singles and an album on vinyl in the late 1980s/early 1990s. I came across this track on The Sound Of Leamington Spa: Volume 1 CD.

Lightships - Sweetness in her Spark

Perfect springtime listening...

Gerard Love from Teenage Fanclub, whom I have never really listened to. Did see a couple of them backing Robert Forster at a truly notable gig in Glasgow many moons ago though.

Rod Stewart - Reason to believe

Listened to Tim's version, listened to Johnny's, but Rod's is still the best. Everything sounds pretty good after a bottle of Chianti riserva, mind you.

I wouldn't doubt your feelings there, Stuart - recent listening reiterated for me that that four-album run of Rod's remains a golden era.

No Peace in My Palace - Grant

Pure alchemy - "Now that Cupid's done what he could" isn't one of Grant's best lines by a long shot, and the horn that comes in not long after could be pure MOR under other circumstances, but here it has me welling up every time.

Considering what he was doing with the Faces as well, it really was an astonishingly fecund period. Hard to believe what it all turned into.

Considering the lyric is proceed by a violin and succeeded by an oboe, it wouldn't be a stretch to guess that Grant is referring to Amanda.

Should have checked my facts first Jeff, it's the Would-Be-Goods record that the Set played as the band on. Louis Philippe certainly wrote alot of the AA stuff, I am a fan of his voice and songwriting.

Simon and Garfunkel - Mrs Robinson

Just heard it on the radio. Wonderful, I've always loved the sound of the song, with those acoustic twiddly bits (technical term?).

Best for me from the duo is always 'America' though; forever mysterious...

More pop with creative use of wind instruments. That vile/vial line always makes me wince though.
