Wisdom of Harry - Chicken I somehow got the impression that Pete Astor's later solo work was all weird electronic experimentation, but the album this is from is just a great sequence of VU-influenced rock songs, very Weather Prophets in other words. This one has a particularly lovely dark guitar bit on it. As I mentioned elsewhere, 98p on Amazon. Ridiculous. |

Changed my mind. Song of the day is, of course, You Get What You Give by the New Radicals. I heard it in the supermarket earlier and it has now cropped up on iTunes. |

Pugwash - Shine On Norvell Jefferson. Ireland doesn't produce a lot of power pop bands, but Pugwash pretty much single-handedly make up for it. |

The Waterboys - Glastonbury Song. Such a joyously wonderful pop song. iTunes tells me the last time I played it was on new year's eve 2009. I must have played it on CD or iPod since then though, surely. I can't have gone two years, three months and six days since last playing this. |

theoretical china. oh, how i loved that song! that was my first thought after reading jeff's post. like so many other records i also sold my winston tong records. but the web can help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32UlbOinJ Uk still nice, but a ''deep in the eighties song/sound''. while talking about winston tong i nearly forgot why i am here. that is my song of the day: father john misty - Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tHJB9Po_ Hc the ex- fleet foxes member does a great job. especially the opening hits you like the beat on the hi-hat, the noisy guitar and the reverberant voice singing ''jesus Christ, girl....''. the video isn't bad, too. |

I wouldn't doubt your feelings there, Stuart - recent listening reiterated for me that that four-album run of Rod's remains a golden era. No Peace in My Palace - Grant Pure alchemy - "Now that Cupid's done what he could" isn't one of Grant's best lines by a long shot, and the horn that comes in not long after could be pure MOR under other circumstances, but here it has me welling up every time. |

Considering the lyric is proceed by a violin and succeeded by an oboe, it wouldn't be a stretch to guess that Grant is referring to Amanda. |
