Wow. Super depressing. I was selfishly hoping he'd pull just one more Australian song collection. In addition to the perfect "Messenger" I recommend the nearly-as-good collection of Australian songs, "Resonate", and his collection of northern hemisphere songs, "Life's What You Make It". His version of "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding" is pure magic. | ||

I don't know a lot about Jimmy Little's work, except that Randy has sent me a handful of his covers of 80s songs that I like, and I'm always impressed with how tastefully and passionately he does them. His version of "Cattle and Cane" is phenomenal. | ||

Thank you for that Padraig. It's nice to read that he was the sort of person that he sounded like he was. I picked up a copy of the 2 CD anthology "Passage" last week. (Prior to that I had only a crappy "Best of" from the '80s). There's a lot of soggy MOR of course but there's also some great stuff, e.g. "Goodbye Isn't Really Good At All" and the gorgeous 2001 original "Thank You for the Dreamtime." It's fascinating that he recorded a Barry Gibb song in 1964 when the Bee Gees were squeaky little kids who had come up with a TV theme song but that's about it. He did another one in 1970 called "Walking Talking Teardrop" that is such an accurate example of early '60s pop country that I can't help wondering if the songwriting credit is an error. But Barry Gibb could write a song. I'm guessing Little's 1972 album "Winterwood" is a keeper, judging from the songs included from it. Now, if I could just get my d@#m CD reader on my laptop to read the disc and load on the songs! |
