Unfortunately its not the "Luxe and Redux" double CD. http://www.dominorecordco.com/artists/pa vement/ The Pavement reissues are a thing of beauty, probably the most sumptious reissues I own, details at the link above. Although I am a huge Pavement fan I have never been able to warm to Wowee Zowee, which seems to be most hard core Pavement fans favourite. Even Malkmus' patchy solo career is better than this imo. The Pavement compilation album Quarantine The Past has been getting big licks on my MP3 player recently. If you read the biog from the link that I have provided above you might be surprised to know that Pavement went on to become a multi platinum selling band, drawing parallels with REM no less:-) Start reading from "Pavement had laid the groundwork for mainstream success..." about 3/4 of the way down the page | ||

Great northern - Driveway Padraig might remember this one - the final scene song for Matt's dad's funeral. Glenn Richards -- Painter by Numbers I bought "Glimjack" at one of those unlucky times when I bought too many things and something else overshadowed it with the result that "Glimjack" never received the individualized attention it deserved. This also happened to two Walkmen albums I have. When "Painter by Numbers" popped up on the iPod I was already attracted by the very atypical pedal steel guitar before the voice came on. Then the voice came on and I thought "gee, who came first and influenced who? The Walkmen in NYC or Glenn Richards & Augie March in Oz?" assuming that I was listening to the Walkmen. I've noticed the similarity between them before, particularly when listening to the Walkmen's "Lisbon" album, a record I enjoy very much. I then reflected on how the best Walkmen moments also remind me of Ronnie Weiss' superb Dylanesque recordings during the mid-60s as part of the obscure Texas band Mouse and the Traps. All this time I assumed I was listening to a cut from either the first or second Walkmen album, as I'd never absorbed them well enough to reliably recognize their songs. But it was Glenn Richards. Magnificent. | ||

Two contradictory views from the web: “Glimjack is all nuance, though it takes a little while to hear it - these songs may seem a little faceless at first, but the set more than rewards repeat listens.” “Richards writes the kind of music that can be put on in the background. Kevin, I'm totally unqualified to direct you on the Walkmen. I only have three of their albums. My nephew switched me onto them last summer. My problem with them is that--like the first Strokes album everybody including me bought--they love 100% compressed recordings where everything is turned up to 11. While that effect is great for the occasional number it becomes tiring and monotonous if you do it on everything. So, on "Bows & Arrows" which I think is basically a pretty strong album, there is a barrage of five cranked-up songs before relief finally comes on the sixth song "138th Street." The second half of "Bows & Arrows" is actually reasonably nuanced and the final title song is great. "Lisbon"--their soon to be second-to-newest album--is the one I've enjoyed the most because it backs off somewhat on the crazy hyped up sound and displays some excellent songcraft. What I love about the Walkmen is their penchant for minor key music--a shortcut to Randy's musical heart--and the vocalist's punk Dylan delivery. Which really IS a 21st Century version of Mouse & the Traps' Ronnie Weiss. When the backing drops away, the vocalist just sounds great to me. Hugh, thank you for that link. I will be downloading the Rio Grande album assuming I don't run into a technical problem. Stuart, I've never thought of Glenn Richards as a purveyor of background music. Since I haven't given "Glimjack" a proper hearing I can't give you my vote yet but if I end up agreeing with your second alternative it'll mean it's a bad album. Padraig bigged up "Glimjack" on here. I remember listening to it at least once and NOT being grabbed by it. But sometimes that just means I was in crappy mood and not really listening. All I can say is that "Painter by Numbers" was terrific yesterday. The ipod also tossed up "They Hate Us" a couple weeks ago. That seemed much less distinctive. It reminded me of Dan Kelly. Glenn Richards does like to show how prolific he is and puts too many songs on a release. Robert & Grant's 10 song rule is a wise one. | ||

Randy, on a clear day you can get some lovely views of the city from the top of Calton Hill and Arthurs Seat. Calton Hill is the easier of the two climbs. I was not kidding about the long johns. The weather here has been pretty dreich of late. It was 7C in Prestwick yesterday ( 17C in London.) Much nicer ( and warmer ) today. If you venture up to The Castle, check out The Witchery Restaurant which is on the Royal Mile. Very formal but it has bags of character, particulary the downstairs dining area. It is pricey at night but I think the lunchtime menu is not too bad. | ||

I'm a little angry at myself because I passed a pair of buskers either doing an original or at least something I wasn't familiar with and I wanted to drop 5 quid in their case but the smallest thing I had was a ten. Randy, I have never known dress to be an issue in Edinburgh so I doubt if your jeans will be a problem. The city is indeed blessed with some fabulous chefs/restaurants ( Martin Wishart/Martin Wishart; The Kitchin/Tom Kitchin; The Plumed Horse/Tony Borthwick ) All three are located in Leith. The Plumed Horse opened up in Crossmichael, Dumfries & Galloway, before relocating to Edinburgh a few years ago. | ||

My music forays are seriously inhibited by the composition of my little travel group, as one isn't particularly music-mad. We were in a very nice small record store in Edinburgh today, near the University. The name starts with an "a" but it escapes me right now. I hoped to find a copy of the first Bathers LP but no such luck. Getting it back to the States in playable condition would have been challenging, I suppose. There was a nice display of local Edinburgh artists' releases. Wish I could have consulted Hugh at that point. | ||

Randy, I am sorry about that. I should have known that you would be looking for places to dine. The standard of food served in the better restaurants in Edinburgh is usually very good so hopefully Endine and Wedgewood will not disappoint. As for the small record store, my guess would be Avalanche Records in the Grassmarket if it is still open. Vinyl copies of the debut album by The Bathers can be purchased here :- http://www.discogs.com/Bathers-Unusual-P laces-To-Die/release/2239161 The easiest and most direct route to the the top of Arthurs Seat is reckoned to be from the east ( starting off at Dunsapie Loch.) Some of the others are a lot harder. Calton Hill is a much easier climb ( particularly via Royal Terrace which is off London Road.) Well worth the effort if you get a nice day tomorrow. I don't know if you are a film fan or not but, if you are and you want a reminder of your visit to Edinburgh, pick up a copy of 'The Illusionist aka L'illusionniste' on your return home. It is Sylvain Chomet's follow up to 'The Triplets Of Belleville.' The majority of this animated film takes place in Edinburgh ( 1950s ) and the drawings ( North Bridge Street, Arthurs Seat, Calton Hill, Princes Street, The Castle and Jenners Department Store ) are simply wonderful. | ||

Love your description of Irn Bru Randy. My wife used to rave about The Witchery, when we met about 23 years ago she stayed in Edinburgh and had a flat in the Bruntstone area of the city. Kevin, I've had haggis in about 50 per cent of my meals including tonight with an unusual haggis/pepper sauce. I think it's great. I can give a firm thumbs up to Wedgwood (on some part of the royal mile, but don't ask me which name the specific part of the street has.) In my wine-induced haze I can't tell everything I ate but I can talk about the dessert: a sweet red onion sorbet with goat's cheese blended with orange and Bicardi. It sounds bizarre and I've learned to order the bizarre-sounding dish. It was brilliant. So . . . This time through, I'd say that on a return visit I'd be sure to eat at the Witchery (or Secret Garden) and at Wedgwood and then see what else excited me. Edinburgh is VERY well served for food. | ||

Meanwhile, getting back to Song of the Day: Jan Akkerman - Lammy, part 2 From his all-too-brief "Hail the new guitar god" period back in the 70s when the record company was showering money on him, Jan recorded this way over the top choir, orchestra and kitchen sink piece in New York; but when the voices fade and the guitar and band kick in it develops into one of the most beautiful pieces of instrumental music ever recorded. | ||

Finally Bob Moulds prettiest song (and his most melodic song, which is really saying something given how many he wrote) sounds as good as it deserves to thanks to the remaster of Copper Blue. Public Image Ltd - One Drop. I don't think I've ever been so wrong about a song since I dismissed Bankrobber by The Clash (my favourite band at the time) as dope addled rubbish. That wasn't my smartest ever appraisal of a song! One Drop is my favourite song of the year so far, from my favourite album of the year so far. On my recently acquired mp3 player, driven by my brand new shiny portable headphone amp (did anybody else know these existed, I never till recently?) this song just sounds terrific. From the turbo charged bass(where did they get this guy?), to Lu Edmonds searing guitar work and Lydons deranged vocal, topped off by Bruce Smiths "flying cymbols" technique (ripped off from the "rockers" style patented by Bunny Lee's late 70's reggae productions btw) this song just has everything and is up there with the debut single, Poptones, Careering and Death Disco in the PIL cannon imo. | ||

Public Image Ltd - Home Is Where the Heart Is B-side of the Flowers Of Romance Single. Its a belter that would have fitted in perfectly on Metal Box and was in fact a staple of that tour. Reggae bass line(played by Levine, Wobble had already left)and Lydon just singing stream of conciousness lyrics over the top. Listened to Flowers of Romance album, not nearly as bad as I remembered. Disappointed in this at the time it came out and rarely listened to it at all, but after being exposed to all manner of music in the 30 years since I think I finally "get" it now. Lydon was always ahead of the game. | ||

John Cooper Clarke - Beasley Street. Loved the bit in the doc where there was an anecdote about where Beasley Street was, and JCC apparently said it didnt exist but it rhymed well with cheesy and queasy! |
