I'm the one who made the suggestion. I told Padraig that some of Dom A's earlier work, say around the time of "Remue", makes me think of PJ's aesthetics, her determination not to be pretty. That's not a great expression of it but I really do think he was aware of her and drawing a bit of inspiration from her. In addition to the long tradition of French pop and chanson and Bashung influences of course. But I'm still absorbing Dom A and processing so take it with some sodium chloride. Hugh, of the three you've gotten I'm of the opinion that "Vers Les Lueurs" towers above everything. It's nice to have the new album achieve that status. | ||

Meanwhile, I picked up a copy of the new Walkmen. On first listen I don't think it will rate as one of their better albums. It's not bad but it's not got an awful lot of memorable songcraft going on. I also picked up a $4 copy of Tom Jones' 2010 album "Praise and Blame." I wanted to get his new album which has versions of "Tower of Song" and "Dimming of the Day" on it but no luck at Amoeba. I have to say that "Praise and Blame" is a pretty solid album. He's obviously taking cues from latter-day Johnny Cash and Bettye Lavette. He certainly has the voice to do so. | ||

Randy, I have 'Si Je Connais Harry' and 'Auguri: Edition Limitee' on order and expect to take delivery of same in the next few days. I can see where you are coming from regarding 'Vers Les Lueurs' but, knowing myself as I do, I suspect I will probably end up favouring one of his early releases. :-) Very impressed with what I have heard so far and the remainder of his back catalogue will be added to my music collection over the next few weeks. Tom is not my bag, but he has that enthusiasm about other music that is refreshing and infectious, going all the way beck to the old blues singers. Paul Buchanan - Mid Air. Courtesy of Spotify yet again. This is starkly beautiful, just vocal, piano, some subtle sparse strings and minimal electronics. Some really positive reviews too. I was never a huge Blue Nile fan, some of the early stuff was excellent but they seemed to get more polished with each passing album so I tuned out. This is really the year for 80's comebacks. And genuinely terrific comebacks at that. Paul Buchanans album, the storming return of PIL and perhaps most staggering of all Dexys. I haven't heard the album yet, but have heard 4 songs on Jools Holland and they were pretty good. The reviews are just off the scale , 9's and 10's - so I'm quietly optimistic. | ||

Wonderwall music by George Harrison. I saw the recent the George Harrison doco and it had a mad part of the film with this guy pretending to ski in a bubble with polystyrene being blown about whilst Colin Manly (aka Eric Clapton) plays this riff over a phasing sitar chime! I had to get it!! $70 later (OUCH) this is half REALLY annoying indian violin (Microbes, Crying) and some very dated B grade movie stuff - VERY GOOD!!!!! Sometimes I like to challenge myself!!! I've made a a playlist on iTunes with it and The Fireman's "Rushes" which sort of evens things out a bit - sort of like Valium to counteract a bad trip! | ||

Dexys - One Day I'm Going To Soar. Had three listens now and can safely say the reviews are not over the top, this is far better than we could have hoped for. Thankfully its more akin to the early stuff and Dont Stand Me Down rather than the raggle taggle of Too Ry Ay (suits me, I didnt really like that Dexy's era at all), the only duff song as far as I am concerned is I'm Always Going To Love You. It is a duet between Kevin Rowland and a girl vocalist which is a kind of role play about how he is maybe not the man for her and she doesnt take it very well and isn't shy in telling him. It was spoiled for me even more when one of my friends said that it is Dexy's "Meatloaf" moment. I knew what he meant although I dont remember the name of the song, but I do vaguely remember the chubby one having some verbals with his female adversary!! | ||

I listened to the half minute samples of the new Dexys album on Amazon, and while some songs sounded promising, others sounded dreadful, and Rowland's voice and singing style is really not so great. I think he's lost the upper range of his voice, so he can't belt 'em out like he used to. Color me skeptical. (And this is coming from a serious fan of the first two albums). | ||

He has definitely lost the upper range Jeff, when they toured in 2003 it had gone and Pete Williams the bass player sang the high parts or anything that needed a stretch. If you are a fan of the first two albums but not the third it is unlikely you will like this as it's closest in mood and design to Don't Stand Me Down. | ||

I was actually quite a late convert to Dexys. I knew and liked all the singles of course (apart from the Too Rye Ay stuff, didnt hate it just left me a bit cold) but never really bothered with the albums till about 10 years ago and I now absolutely love albums 1 and 3. I quite like KR's voice on this. The last 3 songs are sublime. One thing about KR, he's never dull!! | ||

Yeah, I love, love, love the first two Dexys albums, but I can't stand Don't Stand Me Down. Except for "This is What She's Like" and "Kevin Rowland's 13th Time" (the latter of which wasn't even on the original - and it's by far the best song!), I agree with Trouser Press that Don't Stand Me Down is a "torpid snore that denies entertainment on every level." If the new one is like DSMD, it may not be my cup of tea. | ||

One of the tracks on the new album reminds me very much of a track on DSMD. Both have a lot of Kevin talking on them. Of all the English musicians with Irish parents he is definitely the one who takes the most obvious pride in his heritage. It's hard to imagine, for instance, the Gallagher brothers, referencing their Irishness in song. Morrissey did record Irish Blood, English Heart though. | ||

The Walkmen - Heaven. Have played this a lot on Spotify recently and its coming across as a very strong album. Have ordered it from Amazon as my local HMV don't even stock it. This is pretty worrying (and ties in with the posts about record stores closing down that was discussed elsewhere on the board)as they have always stocked albums by them before, and similar stature bands like Liars etc. However, they didnt have The Liars abum recently either so I had to order that one online too. This is a university town as well so you would expect them to stock currently hip US bands. God knows what they stock in smaller towns? Soon all albums will be available online only, its inevitable. | ||

Kevin, I've listened to "Heaven" twice so far. I still don't think it's as strong an album as "Lisbon" which I seriously love. Re record stores, yes they are going away and buying online will be the norm. I'm hoping that the little enthusiast type stores, like Avalanche in Edinburgh, will survive. There still have to be places where people who like to talk about music and are only interested in the small-volume indie type artists can get their fix. Not in small towns though. And ultimately I can't see a long term future for huge clearinghouse places like Amoeba in Hollywood unless they focus on online selling and sell to foot traffic only as a sideline. | ||

Andreas, I am a huge fan of Pearls Before Swine / Tom Rapp. I purchased a copy of 'One Nation Underground' back in the late 1960's and they soon became one of my favourite groups of that era. Forty years on and I still pull out and play their albums on a regular basis. 'Riegal' from 'The Use Of Ashes' is one of my favourite Tom Rapp songs. Andreas, I was almost certain it was you who mentioned purchasing The Owl Service album some years ago which is why I made mention of 'There Used To Be A Crown' EP. I like it but I have to say I much prefer the originals. I suspect Randy will probably hate me for this but, in my opinion, there is usually a law of diminishing returns when it comes to an artist's work. I invariably prefer their earlier releases. I like all the Tom Rapp albums but none of them can compete with his work with Pearls Before Swine as far as I am concerned. Familiar Songs was released by Reprise Records in 1972 without Rapp's approval or knowledge. I think the songs were basically demos. To be avoided unless you are a completist. I put my hands up and admit that I have it on both vinyl and cd. Stardancer was released by Blue Thumb in 1972. Standout tracks for me include Stardancer; Fourth Day Of July and For The Dead In Space. Sunforest was released by Blue Thumb in 1973. My favourite tracks are 'Prayers Of Action' and 'Harding Street.' Rapp then disappeared from ths music scene for almost 26 years before resurfacing in 1999 with the release of 'Journey Of The Plague Year' on Woronzow in 1999. The Pearls Before Swine box set ( Jewels Were the Stars ) was released by Water Recording/Reprise in 2003. In 2004, Water Recordings released a two disc set of vintage Pearls Before Swine recordings ( home demos/out-takes/studio recordings/works in progress ) entitled 'The Wizard Of Is.' In addition to the above, I also own copies of 'For The Dead In Space - Volumes I, II and III' by Various Artists. Well worth a listen. Padraig, I like them. I have never been able to track down their debut album ( Let's Get T-Shirts Made ) but I do have a copy of their second 'Beyond The Stars' which was released back in 2006 or thereabouts. I wanted to pick up a copy of 'Heart Part Of Your Mind' from Scottie at Popboomerang when it was released in 2010 but the cost was prohibitive due to the exchange rate/shipping charge. I decided to wait for a UK release which, as far as I know, never materialised. Must try and source a copy. JH was in The Dead Salesmen prior to forming Underminers in 2002. There is very little information on the band online and I have no idea how much material they recorded or released. I do have an album entitled 'Amen' which I suspect dates from the 1990s on the Way Out There label. Cosmo, I am playing catch up. I liked almost everything I heard by him in the 1960s/1970s but for some reason I never purchased anything. I suspect it was because I never considered him 'cool' back then. The stupidy of youth. I am currently in the process of acquiring as much of his back catalogue as I can. Light In The Attic Records are in the process of re-issuing some of his stuff. The first in the series ( The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes and Backsides ) was released in May and the next ( A House Safe For Tigers ) will follow in August. They are promising lots of rarities and unreleased tracks all re-mastered from the original analogue tapes. I think the entire two disc set is stunning. I am not familiar with the Alpha song. | ||

Not being familiar with Alpha, I checked them out on AllMusic who, in their overview, state that the duo were inspired by film soundtracks and the songwriting of Jimmy Webb. I am huge fan of Jimmy Webb and have ordered used copies of the bands first three releases ( Come From Heaven; Pepper; The Impossible Thrill ) from an AmazonCo Marketplace Seller ( Zoverstocks.) I managed to source a sealed copy of 'Trouble Is A Lonesome Town' by Lee Hazlewood for a reasonable price earlier today. It was released back in 2000 on Smells Like Records and is now out of print. | ||

Hugh, the Alpha boys are massive Jimmy Webb fans for sure but it's not reflected in the songs that much, the second album Impossible Thrill is good but the songs aren't as strong as the first album Come From Heaven which is a stone cold Bristol classic, Stargazing is the third album and something of a return to form. I presume if you are a Jimmy Webb fan you have the Richard Harris stuff? Alpha covered This Is Where I Came In on the South EP with Jarvis Cocker on vocals | ||

Padraig, play the Jack Ladder album, by all means. I'm having my third pass through it. It is a terrific set of soundscapes. Lyrically, I'm only hearing some of it both because of the mix and his mumbly delivery. I didn't get what the first song is about. (that's ok, don't tell me.). "Cold Feet" is clear enough and I already knew most of the lyrics to the title song which I heard on a video of him playing it live all alone in some obscure NSW regional village. He sometimes makes me think of a cross between Nick Cave and Mark Lanegan but that's unfair. He does have that sort of voice though. The record is scoring well. | ||

Poet, Fool or Bum has a couple of great songs on it Wind,Sky,Sea and Sand & The Performer would both be on my perfect Lee compilation. Cosmo, The Raven compilation is pretty pricey and since I already own a copy of The Webb Sessions: 1968-1969 I will probably just go for My Boy which can be picked up quite cheaply. South appears to have been issued as a single ( 2 tracks ) and an EP ( 4 tracks.) This Is Where I Came In is on both so I have ordered a cheap copy of the single for the time being. I am having difficulty finding a website with a full and easy to follow discography of Lee Hazlewood's career. I know Some Velvet Morning is not on any of the albums I have acquired to date so I am guessing it is on Nancy and Lee which is currently OOP. I love the song. The only ones missing are the duets with Nancy. Nancy and Lee is currently OOP and unavailable. Fairy Tales and Fantasies: The Best Of Nancy and Lee which collects the tracks from Nancy and Lee and adds another four songs is available from AmazonCom for US$499.95. I really like him, but not that much. I checked out the above website several days ago. It does seem have pretty much everything you would need on it but it is not exactly what I am looking for. The review I read stated that it contained all the songs he recorded for the label with the exception of the duets with Nancy. Having made further enquiry, I have established that to be wrong. The set consists of all the tracks from the albums The N.S.V.I.P's; Friday's Child; Love And Other Crimes ( with the possible exception of one song ) together with a number of singles and a collection of songs he produced for other artists ( Jack Nitzsche; Duanne Eddy; The Wildcats and more ) so, in effect, it only covers the stuff he recorded for the label in the 1960s. Stuart, I am not a fan of live albums so I will probably pass on Sur Nos Forces Motrices. The only other album I have still to acquire is L'Horizon. I was aware of the La Fossette / Un Disque Sourd two disc set when I placed an order for La Fossette but I think it was my first purchase and not knowing whether or not I would like him I decided to go for the later as it was far cheaper than the former. I am a huge fan or home/diy recordings hence why I want to pick up a copy of Un Disque Source. As far I can tell, the only way to acquire a copy of his debut at the moment is to purchase the La Fossette Edition Speciale. I think he is a superb artist. Kevin, not your type of music I suspect but the first video below is a track from the best live album I own. I saw them perform live at The Magnum, Irvine, many years ago and they were incredible. A five man folk group augmented by a double bass, piano and three piece brass section. Folk music ( Scottish and French ) jazz, blues and honky tonk. One of the best live shows I ever attended. The percussion was played by the guitarist/fiddler using his feet while seated on a slightly raised miked stage. Live albums work when they're not just cash-in greatest hit run throughs and when the artist is someone who either really stretches their wings live or who has come up with something new in the way of interpreting or arranging their work - having said that, I don't have too many on my shelves either! But some I do like and play a lot include Van M's Too late to stop now, Leonard's Field Commander Cohen, Jane Birkin's Arabesque, both Alan Bashung's live albums (and the astonishing Live at Olympia DVD), Jackson Brown's recent solo stuff, Neil Young Live at Massey Hall...sometimes live albums do have a magic which studio work never quite manages to capture. | ||

Randy, I have already ordered the Edition Speciale of La Fossette from AmazonCo and I am pretty sure I will receive the two disc set. The image on the web page clearly shows that it includes 'Un Disque Sourd' and if you scroll down to product details it lists the label as EMI and the release date as January, 2012. It does say one disc in the product details field but if you check out AmazonFr you will see they also have it listed as one disc under the same heading despite showing it as 2CD at the top of the page. As far as I know, the EMI release is only available as a two disc set. It should arrive sometime next week. I will let you know how I get on. Fingers crossed. | ||
