They are still celebrating their 60th anniversary, and flicking through my daughters copy this week they have issued a poll of the 100 greatest songs.
It was surprisingly good I thought, with no obvious omissions off the top of my head (although my list would be markedly different to this), a decent mix of pop, rock, chart toppers and left field.

Their website lists the top 20

1. Joy Division – 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'
2. Pulp – 'Common People'
3. David Bowie – 'Heroes'
4. The Beach Boys – 'Good Vibrations'
5. New Order – 'Blue Monday'
6. The Stone Roses – 'She Bangs The Drums'
7. The Smiths – 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'
8. The Specials – 'Ghost Town'
9. Dizzee Rascal – 'Fix Up, Look Sharp'
10. Oasis – 'Wonderwall'
11. The Rolling Stones – 'Sympathy For The Devil'
12. The Ronettes – 'Be My Baby'
13. Michael Jackson – 'Billie Jean'
14. Sex Pistols – 'God Save The Queen'
15. The Beatles – 'A Day In The Life'
16. The Cure – 'Boys Don't Cry'
17. Bob Dylan – 'Like A Rolling Stone'
18. The Beach Boys – 'God Only Knows'
19. Madonna – 'Like A Prayer'
20. The Stone Roses – 'I Am The Resurrection'

I do have some reservations though.
Am I the only person who can't stand Common People? I don't mind Jarvis, I even like some Pulp, but maybe this song has become a bit like REM's Losing My Religion - after hearing it 500 times it loses it's impact.
I love it, but is Boy's Don't Cry the 16th best song of the last 60 years? I don't even think it's in The Cure top 5, and like I say I really think it's a great song.

Oh, I've just remembered - there was no Go-Betweens :-)
Cattle and Cane is obviously not as good as songs like Video Games by Lana Del Rey, or Dry Your Eyes by The Streets.

Fairly typical NME, been around for 60 years and been over-rating The Beatles for 50 of them.

I'd have a lot of artists with one really good song in my top 60. Whole Wide World, I Melt With You, Slip Away by Metro Trinity, etc.
