Being playing a lot of "post-punk" stuff lately, although to be honest I have never really stopped playing music from this genre since it first started being released in 1978-ish.
I guess nobody can really decide when post-punk first started, some would say it was as early as late 1977 given that punk was a short lived burst from 1976 till 1977. When it stopped is also up for debate, but my opinion would be 1982.
So here's my top 10

1)PIL - Metal Box
2)The Fall - Grotesque
3)Joy Division - Closer
4)Wire - 154
5)Gang Of Four - Entertainment
6)Magazine - The Correct Use Of Soap
7)Talking Heads - Fear of Music
8)The Sound - From The Lions Mouth
9)The Associates - Fourth Drawer Down
10)Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth

Just missing out was Cut by The Slits, Sleep No More by The Comsat Angels, Heaven Up Here by Echo and The Bunnymen, Boys Don't Cry by The Cure, Playing With A Different Sex by The Au Pairs, The Only Fun In Town by Josef K and Thist by Clock DVA.

I'm going to stretch the timeline a little. I'm sure Kevin won't agree that some of these qualify. I'm not sure they do either, but I'd be hard pressed to get to 10 otherwise.

1 Talking Heads - Remain In Light
2 Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
3 Echo & The Bunnymen - Ocean Rain
4 Joy Division - Closer
5 Wire - Pink Flag
6 Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
7 Public Image Ltd - Metal Box
8 The Slits - Cut
9 Echo & The Bunnymen - Porcupine
10 Gang Of Four - Entertainment

I'm stretching time a bit too - I think we can take it up to '83. Here's a top 10 that's not in any particular order and could be subject to change any given day:

1. Associates - Fourth Drawer Down
2. Wire - 154
3. Magazine - 2nd Hand Daylight
4. PIL - Metal Box
5. Siouxsie - Kaleidoscope
6. Joy Division - Closer
7. Killing Joke - What's This For?
8. The Passage - Pindrop
9. Modern Eon - Fiction Tales
10. Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro

And if I could list more, I'd list these:

The Cure - Pornography; Cocteau Twins - Head Over Heels; The Fall - Perverted By Language; Bunnymen - Porcupine; The Sound - From the Lion's Mouth; Sad Lovers and Giants - Epic Garden Music; Comsat Angels - Fiction; Simple Minds - Empires and Dance; Gang of Four - Solid Gold

Interesting to see that Porcupine gets a rating from you guys. I remember when it came out, in Auz at least, that it was viewed as being somewhat of a disappointment after Heaven up Here and Crocodiles. In the last couple of years though it has finally started to earn some well deserved respect. I remember though that it was a hard one to get into - very sonically and lyrically dense.

I'm trying to think of some "Auz Post Punk" that was on par with these things from the U.K. but am coming up with (mostly) blanks.

Any ideas?

Sports?

Reels?(Quasimodo's dream was very good)

Split Enz? (we ALWAYS claim anything NZ as our own!)(True Colours always gets the stars but I've always found most of it unsatisfying...except for the Neil Finn songs!)

Dare I say "Icehouse"?! Simple Minds toured with them in '81(?).

Oh, did I write Porcupine? I made a mistake and meant to write Crocodiles. Porcupine is pretty good, though.

Oz post-punk Geoff? Tactics. Top level post punk IMO. I would also certainly name the Birthday Party. And the Moodists.

As for Oz post-punk, I'd also include the Laughing Clowns.

There seems to be a difference on what we think is the best Echo and the Bunneyman album!

Duh, Jeff! I totally forgot. You could even make an argument for "Prehistoric Sounds" being one of the early post-punk albums in the most literal sense. That's what got them into trouble, fatigue with the strictures of punk.

Randy, yes, I think Prehistoric Sounds definitely fits the bill as it's a clear break from what was at the time becoming standard punk.

Michael - my personal favorite Bunnymen albums are Crocodiles and Ocean Rain. I like Heaven Up Here and Porcupine, but I think both are about half good. I don't know why I absent-mindedly wrote Porcupine in my first post.

Jeff,

Same here! I'll add the 1983 ep that had the all night version of The Killing Moon and the live Do It Clean.
