Being playing a lot of "post-punk" stuff lately, although to be honest I have never really stopped playing music from this genre since it first started being released in 1978-ish. I guess nobody can really decide when post-punk first started, some would say it was as early as late 1977 given that punk was a short lived burst from 1976 till 1977. When it stopped is also up for debate, but my opinion would be 1982. Interesting to see that Porcupine gets a rating from you guys. I remember when it came out, in Auz at least, that it was viewed as being somewhat of a disappointment after Heaven up Here and Crocodiles. In the last couple of years though it has finally started to earn some well deserved respect. I remember though that it was a hard one to get into - very sonically and lyrically dense. I'm trying to think of some "Auz Post Punk" that was on par with these things from the U.K. but am coming up with (mostly) blanks. Any ideas? Sports? Reels?(Quasimodo's dream was very good) Split Enz? (we ALWAYS claim anything NZ as our own!)(True Colours always gets the stars but I've always found most of it unsatisfying...except for the Neil Finn songs!) Dare I say "Icehouse"?! Simple Minds toured with them in '81(?). | ||

Duh, Jeff! I totally forgot. You could even make an argument for "Prehistoric Sounds" being one of the early post-punk albums in the most literal sense. That's what got them into trouble, fatigue with the strictures of punk. | ||

Randy, yes, I think Prehistoric Sounds definitely fits the bill as it's a clear break from what was at the time becoming standard punk. Michael - my personal favorite Bunnymen albums are Crocodiles and Ocean Rain. I like Heaven Up Here and Porcupine, but I think both are about half good. I don't know why I absent-mindedly wrote Porcupine in my first post. | ||
