The Go-Betweens - Man O'Sand To Girl O'Sea (live in Vienna). I didn't recognise it at first. Amanda brings so much to this version. Absolutely brilliant.

That is a great song Michael, one of Devoto's overlooked masterpieces.

John Murry - Southern sky

Lots of highly listenable stuff on the latest Uncut cd, but this lush and rugged ballad is my favourite at the moment.

Planxty - Little Musgrave

I was at this recorded show, Liam O'Flynn's Uilleann Pipe break around the 4 minute mark sent shivers down me as only happens at the very best live moments...eg. Ira Kaplan's Pablo & Andrea break one night in Essen, Grant & Robert's Cattle & Cane at The Mean Fiddler in '99, Cohen's "One if Us cannot Be Wrong" in The National Stadium, Dublin in 1987..etc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0-gcccks Ag

eh, not for the milk maids a churning dissidents out there!

Died Pretty -- Stoneage Cinderella

This is almost an absolutely perfect garage punk classic, with only the aimless guitar break to interrupt the proceedings.

Saw Vic a few times Padraig but most memorably in a little back room of a pub in Drogheda, the late great Derek Nally was the promoter and this I'm assuming was his local, there were about 30 of us treated to his "Is The Actor Happy?" album and some oldies as his Athens buddies played to 85,000 over the fields in Slane the previous day.

I was at that R.E.M. show Peter. I wish I'd seen Vic's too.

Derek was a genuinely lovely man.

That's a good song Padraig, I have all the Mojave 3 stuff, the first Neil Halstead solo album is very good, the opening track is a gorgeous Nick Drakeian creation which has graced many a Cosmo compilation

Lee Perry - Words

Usually when I ask business students during a first lesson if they like music at all, the response tends to be "I like all kinds of music", "I listen to the radio in the car" or "I love Queen and Pink Floyd." So when the guy yesterday said "I'm into roots reggae and I also do my own remixes" I almost fell off the chair. And he happened to have some stuff in his car to lend me. Excellent.

Mark Eitzel - We All Have To Find Our Own Way Out.

Stand out song from his soon to be released album. I was a big fan of AMC in the 90's but lost interest for some reason and his solo stuff washed right over me. His voice is his biggest asset and his worst, but he has really reigned it in now and the songs really benefit.
You can listen to the album here

Morrissey - You're the one for me, fatty

I was dating a slightly chunky lass when Your arsenal came out, so this became the relationship's theme song. Should we meet up now, I fear the tables would be turned. And then it goes straight into "Seasick, yet still docked," one of the loveliest sad songs of all time. Great album altogether really.

Andrew, I have often thought I was the only person who had ever heard of Chocolate Genius. I'm glad to hear there is another fan out there. I reckon Frank Ocean might also be.

Hi Pádraig

Re: Chocolate Genius, he was another discovery from friends coming up with ideas for my "50 songs for Andrew's 50th birthday" set of CDs.

Our friend, the guitarist Seb Martel sent a track of CG Inc. which I loved. The music seems almost beyond classification...

Seb is playing in this beautiful clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfVGeyxoa MY, and toured with him in France last year. I'm annoyed that I knew nothing about it !

This clip is from that tour and features the wonderful double bassist Sarah Murcia as well
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qBgOGGr2 wc

As for Frank Ocean, maybe I have to listen to some things ? I had written him off as "young person's music" and detest practically everything I have read about OFWGKTA. I come from a generation for whom "R & B" means rhythm and blues !
