In the New York Times obituary he is quoted as saying “Pop songs are not as graceful as they used to be,” in a 1999 interview. I wonder if he had any idea of the younger songwriters he inspired in the 1980s, often in other English speaking countries rather than the U.S.. |

A wonderful lyricist and I'll be digging out my Dionne Warwick records, to remind myself of the man's skill. "LA is a great big freeway / Put a hundred down and buy a car / In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star / Weeks turn into years / How quick they pass / And all the stars that never were are parking cars and pumping gas" It might not scan that well on paper, but put those words in Warwick's mouth and there is absolute poetry and magic! Strangely when I first became aware of Burt Bacharach, it was through an all instrumental LP of him conducting orchestral versions of his and David's songs. I was about 8 or 9 years old and had got my first record player. |
