The Chills - The Male Monster From The Id. It's 20 years, one month and four days since I saw them play an amazing gig at the Phoenician Club in Sydney. I was so much younger then... |

yes David, it has a kind of fearless quality to it, like they have bags of ideas that are bursting out of them and instead of focussing on a few of them they just let rip with the whole lot. There's a joy and exuberance to that. Live (and that's the thread I meant to post in) they are even better, lots of loud and fat synths, lots of grooves and lots of the aforementioned joy. They won the crowd over in quick time. |

Bob Mould - Keep Believing. Can't think of many 52 year olds who sound this thrillingly vital. Ok, it might nick the chords from Second Guessing by REM, but this is a howitzer of a song. |

Stuart, I am aware of two slightly different versions of the song. It appears as 'Barbara' on the Barbara EP which was released in May, 1998 and as 'Barbara / Fading Photo' on the Five Die Filming This Lazy Lark album which was released later the same year. Do you own any of their stuff? |

Not yet, Hugh, but I liked the things I heard on Utube and the various reviews I read so much that Five Die & Sentimental Slush are on their way to me now! The Utube Barbara is the album version. Looking forward to hearing more. |

Stuart, They are a very good band. I don't think you will be disappointed. The recording quality is not always wonderful but their songs and lyrics are excellent. If you enjoy the two albums currently on route then be sure to pick up a copy of 'From The Parish Of Arthritis.' |

Ralph Stanley - White Light / White Heat. A stunning take on the VU song from the Lawless soundtrack. According to the great Nick Cave interview in Uncut magazine, Lou Reed was very moved when he heard Stanley's version. |

Cosmo, what do you make of the Django Django album? I saw them on tv recently performing at an open air concert and liked what I heard. Bought the cd but for me the production on same sucks the life out of the band. |

I think they produced it themselves Hugh and it doesn't sound great but as previously stated the sheer volume of ideas in there is enough to win my affections |

Cosmo, I was very impressed with their live performance and I think they have potential but I am struggling with the production on the cd. That said, I only managed to listen to it a couple of times before I had to send my amp away for repair. I got it back on Monday so I will give the album another go tomorrow. |

I hear the Beta Band too but that's not a bad thing as the Beta Band were brilliant. Django Django are a bit funkier than the BB and sound like they are having a lot more fun |
