Joni Mitchell - Marcie

My Byrds box set vanished en route, so instead I picked up the JM first 10 album set in one of the few Rome music stores still open. Apart from Blue and Court and Spark, I've never had all that much by Joni: so this is a bit like falling head first into a gold mine.

Le Futur Pompiste - Communication

this is a glorious song and sound for Broadcast & Lab fans out there with a crafty pinch from Willows Song from the Wicker Man soundtrack in there for good measure

Cosmo, If you are a fan of the band I hope you already have a copy of their debut album as nowadays it is extremely hard to source/very expensive.

Yes Hugh I have both the albums and have been a fan for quite some time (have posted on them before I think). I am in the middle of putting together a mix for DJ gig I have in Brussels next week and pulled out Communicate for it. It sounded awesome so I thought I would post. Glad there is another fan on the board though!

Cosmo, It would be interesting to know if Siesta still have copies for sale. Their website catalogue is not up to date ( lacking one or two titles which were released in 2010 and 2012 ) which makes me wonder how accurate/reliable the rest of their website is.

I have been collecting music by artists and bands from several of the Nordic Countries for many years and own copies of both the Le Futur Pompiste albums. It has been quite a long time since I last listened to them so I will remedy that this coming week.

Listening to the eponymous album by Le Futur Pompiste on Spotify. The comparisons to Stereolab/Broadcast doesnt do it justice, its almost in tribute band territory. But I like it!

Gene Pitney - 24 hours from Tulsa

Ah, the anguished howl of the solitary male was a lovely thing to me even back in the early 60s. This should have appeared on one of the "first records ever bought" threads, probably not long after Pretty Woman. Perhaps explains why I adore songs with a bit of brass on them. Wonderful arrangement.

Hugh will doubtless be familiar with the Swedish version, "15 minutes from Eslöv"!

Stuart, I don't remember ever hearing or seeing him but it seems he represented his country at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1967 which I may well have watched.

Are you familiar with Labrador aka Flemming Borby. He uses quite a lot of brass ( mainly trumpet and flugelhorn ) on his albums and is a fine songwriter in my opinion. He was born in Denmark but now lives in Berlin, Germany. He released his first album in 2002 and his fourth earlier this year. Links to a video of him talking about the recording of his third album ( Caleidoscope Aeroplane ) and some song samples.

Ah, "Berlin, Germany"... reminds me of those American spy films with the handy geographical subtitles..."Rome, Italy"... "Zurich, Switzerland"...Strangely enough, Hugh, I am not familiar with Flemming Borby! The day I immediately recognise at least one band on your posts I will do a mad Highland fling around my studio... Meanwhile, on with Labrador...

Stuart, Sorry about that. I only noticed it after posting the message. Like many others on this board, I really do wish there was an edit facility.

Well, Stuart, the American films have those subtitles for a practical reason. We don't want people confusing the scenes with our own famous cities Rome, Georgia or Paris, Texas or Dublin, California or Glasgow, New Mexico.

I did notice Randy, but only to the extent of thinking "I haven't heard of that one".

Randy knows this story, which is why he made the comment above I think, but the rest of you don't, so here goes: While waiting for a plane in Bergstrom Airport, Austin after SXSW 2001, I got talking to a guy wearing a ten-gallon hat. Turns out he was from California, not Texas. He asked where I was from. I said: "Dublin". He said: "Ah, the Valley. Very nice." I said: "No, the real Dublin. The one in Ireland."

Meanwhile:

George Harrison - Give me love etc.

It's the slide guitar that stuck in the mind, but I'd forgotten Nicky Hopkins' lovely piano fills...I recently read that some of the latter's best work is on two early Steve Miller albums: anyone familiar with them?

GH - What is life

Haven't heard this for ages - that Spector production really whacks it along, wonderful drums.
