Will be dusting off the wonderful Low Christmas album myself this weekend Padraig. Katy Kim - The Feast From Waterford, Ireland, pretty unique sounds on her second album, best Irish release this year IMO. She has also appeared with The Waterboys on his Yeats shows, don't know if she is Australia bound with them though. http://katiekim.bandcamp.com/track/the-f east-2 |

That's a great record Peter. One of my favourites. Some 90s Dublin musician (I can't remember if it was Dylan from Pet Lamb or Pat from Mexican Pets) once told me a great story about going to The Long Hall with the only member of Low who drinks. Listening to someone else from Dublin now though, Sinéad O’Connor's Mankinka. |

Merry Go 'Round - Kacey Musgraves One of the best country records I've heard in a good long while. And the bleakest view of the downside of smalltown life I've heard in a country song for even longer than that. Even has the temerity to say that (gasp!) there are some followers of Jesus who act like fascists. |

Angie - Rolling Stones Aha, so it's about heroin is it? Finally the lyrics start to make sense - I never knew it was almost wholly written by Keith. And Nicky H on piano again - I must remember to order that biog one day. I still recall Peel's review in Sounds when it first came out, saying he never thought he'd live to hear Jagger singing "ain't it good to be alive." Why I remember this, I have no idea. |

That's a great song about a hateful man Cosmo. Big Star - Winter Sky. A b-side from more than a quarter century ago which still has the power to raise the hair on my arms. |

Of monsters and men - Little talks Italy has just caught on to this song, so it's everywhere at the moment: I see on the net the group is compared to, er, M******s and S**, but I can't answer to that, it's just spankingly excellent pop. |

Stuart, I heard a great story recently about what Van's much abused band did with his harmonica when he wasn't around. |

They - allegedly - would pass said instrument up and down their anal passage before returning it to Van's haronica bag. |

Is that worse than what you would have guessed Stuart? By the way, I used to know the guy who plays guitar on the new Van album when he played with Limerick band Tuesday Blue in the 80s. |

The possibilities were several, I guess... Does Van suffer from chronic nasal congestion?? You'd think he'd catch on, otherwise... Hence the term, "Dirty-south blues harp" I suppose... |

I think the Mayans got it wrong... Life certainly still exists in Sydney, but I'm not certain about the rest of the world, given that no-one else is posting here! Anyway, song of the day now is David Chesworth Ensemble - Dark Light (featuring Robert Forster on vocals). |

Padraig, I know you wont have been at the Xmas sherry yet, and your spelling is always immaculate, so do you know what is Cathal's reasoning behind this title, rather than the more accurate Erin go Bragh? I have Cathal's Black River Falls album cued up for later on. For sheer songcraft and storytelling I reckon Fairytale of New York is not just the greatest Xmas song, its also the peak of Shane McGowans song writing career. Not my favourite Pogues song mind you, that would be The Sick Bed of Cúchulainn, The Body of An American, Streams Of Whiskey,Boys From The County Hell, Pair Of Brown Eyes, Transmetropolitan or A Man You Dont Meet Every Day |

I think it's meant to be a critique of America and the Irish experience there. I've often thought the Irish actor referred to is Gabriel Byrne. But maybe not. Cathal Coughlan's wife is American as far as I know, so maybe it's somewhat auto-biographical. The deliberate misspelling is part of that critique, I would think (perhaps suggesting the US understanding of modern Ireland is shallow and superficial). But the song also mentions Mexico and touches on the supernatural! It had the head of a pig, with clear green eyes and the body of a donkey. It spoke to him. 'Don't be afraid' it said 'I mean you no harm'. It went on to explain how it was the sole survivor of a species whose existence has always been concealed by science, how it was in fear of its life from agents of the US government and simply had to escape to Mexico. It would guide him there if he would protect it. He agreed, unsteadily. |

My wife got me the new Kraftwerk book "Publikation" for Xmas. Didn't realise till recently that the Kraftwerk shows that are upcoming in London and Dusseldorf (the 8 night residencies, where they play each album in chronological order) only features one founder member from the golden period of the mid 70's, and that is Ralf Hutter. Given that the tickets are Ł60 per night plus all the usual add ons this seems a bit of a rip off. And I would hope that they would play more than the featured album on the night of each gig - eg Ł60 plus to see them play Man Machine for 40 or 50 mins and then walk off stage would seem like taking the piss! http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/dec /05/kraftwerk-eight-albums-tate-modern |

The Ralph Hutter solo gigs crashed the ticket site for the London shows. I'm not sure it really matters if they just used the robots onstage or failing that the showroom dummies. http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/arts- entertainment/kraftwerk-goes-acoustic-20 12121353169 |
