The first website to provide an aggregated view of what the critics think are the albums of the year. They take ratings from the likes of NME, Mojo, Uncut, Spin and various music websites like Popmatters and Pitchfork etc. They give a points total to calculate who comes out top. I have never heard the Frank Ocean, might check it out on Spotify but from the descriptions of it I cant see me liking it. http://www.anydecentmusic.com/articles/a lbums-of-2012.aspx 114 Frank Ocean Channel Orange 68 Django Django Django Django 60 Grimes Visions 55 Tame Impala Lonerism 54 Jack White Blunderbuss 45 Sharon Van Etten Tramp 38 Grizzly Bear Shields 37 Leonard Cohen Old Ideas 33 Bill Fay Life Is People 31 Japandroids Celebration Rock 30 Bob Dylan Tempest 30 Dr John Locked Down 29 Death Grips The Money Store 29 Dirty Projectors Swing Lo Magellan 27 The Maccabees Given To The Wild 26 Miguel Kaleidoscope Dream 25 Alt-J An Awesome Wave 24 Dexys One Day I'm Going 23 Cat Power Sun 23 El-P Cancer For Cure This list just confirms my suspicion that this has just possibly been the worst year for rock music ever. I know the critics are not the final barometer of what is good or bad but they usually give a good insight. From that list my probable album of the year(Grizzly Bear) is there, I also enjoyed Japandroids, Jack White, Dexys and Uncle Bob. None of these albums are classics imo. |

Just realised that the list above is just a snapshot of the declared listings so far "Declared: Mojo, Uncut, Guardian (20-9), The Fly, NME, Paste, Spin, The Skinny" * How the chart is calculated: We award a corresponding number of points (20 for No.1, 19 for No.2 etc) to the top 20 albums from each source." |

There are several of what are being billed as albums of the year which I have, but have not yet played. That says more about how many records I buy than about the quality or otherwise of the year's music. So I'll wait a while more before posting a list here. Overall though, I agree with Kevin (a bit) that this year is far from a classic for music. |

Forgot all about Ariel Pinks Haunted Grafitti album, he's still one of the more interesting young artists and isn't safe and predictable thank the Lord. Revised list, Paul Buchanan drops out. Grizzly Bear - Shields Ty Segall - Twins Ariel Pinks Haunted Grafitti - Mature Themes Patterson Hood - Heat Lightning Rumbles In The Distance Hot Chip - In Our Heads Jack White - Blunderbuss Mark Lanegan Band - Blues Funeral Liars - WIXIW NY and Crazy Horse - Psychedelic Pill Dexys - One Day I Will Soar. I toyed with the idea of dropping Dexys and NY and Crazy Horse and replacing it with two more Ty Segall albums - "Slaughterhouse" , and the one he made with White Fence called "Hair" because I think they are better albums. However I will stick to the one artist one album rule. |

Damn, I forgot the Beach House record which is super cool, I am useless at this, Beach House - Bloom in for Euros at 10 (and would probably be higher than 10 up my list). Beginning to think i should have left the lists to Uncut, Mojo etc and then just moaned about them instead. Not a great year by small consensus with Kev and Padraig |

just listened to Beach House again on early morning (still dark) drive to work. Sounding great (and bizarrely very christmassy). It's number 2 album of the year for me. |

Crisis-ridden, penny-counting 2012 has been a lousy year on many levels and a lot of its music has passed me by - so at the moment I'm either listening to George Harrison, Joni Mitchell or classical stuff - but, presuming some hard cash comes my way before Christmas and I can make the trip into town to see Sad Bruno in his shop(if it's still hanging in there), which, say, 5, of the best albums are absolutely not to be missed? I already like the sound of the Grizzly Bear one, so that's already on the list, otherwise...? |

Well, my top 5 are not to be missed obviously Stuart :-) Seriously I've just realised how different they all are though. Grizzly Bear are the slightly kooky, but tuneful American Radiohead. Ty Segall is the new guitar, garagy wunderkid. I'd be amazed if he wasnt all over the music press/websites next year - although in a selfish way I hope he isnt. Ariel Pink is the most leftfield artist in my list, there is nobody else doing what he does, tuneful but still weird. Patterson Hood is the Americana storyteller, who thankfully always has an interesting story to tell. Hot Chip just keep getting better. They have ditched any awkwardness and experimental leanings they had to just make pure dancy, poppy electronic music. If Grizzly Bear are the American Radiohead, then Hot Chip are the UK version of LCD Soundsystem, just more danceable and with hookier songs. |

Stuart Over and Over is probably their most famous song. I do like it but think they have done much better songs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6GDggWPM Qk The 2nd one is Night and Day from the current album - pure electronic pop! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxg2JbWA7 Nk |

Patterson H sounds more my cup of tea, if a bit Springteenish. Ty Seagull's voice is just too high for me, all my favourite singers inhabit the lower regions in general: unlike Randy, "getting past the voice" is something I can rarely do. I like voices with a dark edge to them. |

Springsteenish? Jeez, that's a low blow insult to Mr Hood. Can't see it myself, then again the amount of Broooce songs I'm familiar with could be written on a post-it pad. Born In The USA - bomabastic piss Born To Run - bombastic crap I'm on Fire - puerile drivel Dancing In The Dark- pop drivel. In saying all that I can appreciate that he is an old school rock n roller who means it maaan! And I wouldnt knock him for that, I just cant warm to his music. |

The Triffids--On the Street Where You Live Specifically, the live version appended to the reissue of "Treeless Plain" is what made this the song of the day for me starting this morning. But here's the Triffids' 1981 video clip made for the somewhat more slapdash version of the song that they recorded at the McCombs' house and released on one of their many cassettes. Pretty cool document. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGuNLRSgw Pg |

Here are my favorite 10 albums from the year. I agree that it has been a weird year for music. It would be fun to compile my favorite singles, but it would also be too much work. 1. Sweet Serenades – Help Me! 2. Advance Base – A Shut-In's Prayer 3. Hospitality – Hospitality 4. Guided By Voices – Class Clown Spots a UFO 5. All Darlin' – Europe 6. Young Man – Vol. 1 7. Airiel Pink's Haunted Graffiti – Mature Themes 8. Wild Nothing – Nocturne 9. Adele & Glenn – Carrington St. 10. Woods – Bend Beyond |

Listened to Frank Ocean's album on Spotify. This is far and away the winner of the various albums of the year polls, if not No1 (and it is on many) it makes numerous appearances in top 5's It's falsetto-ed, tepid, MOR rubbish. |

The world and his wife are raving about this guy, he's everywhere in all these EOY lists and obviously a big favourite on here. That is usually either a good thing (because he is genuinely good), or a bad thing (the latest big hype). I'm firmly in the latter camp. You guys must love The Weeknd then? |

Having any faith in end of year polls is quite brave in itself. The music press in this country in particular has always been a huge back-biting pool of twats since it began. All of them have an agenda. |

If nothing else I think EOY polls are informative and are a good reference point as to what interesting releases I might have overlooked. Especially so in the last 10 years or so when almost everything can be listened to in some form online, almost as a try before you buy. There will be a lot of the overlooked stuff that when listened to will not be purchased, but over the years I have been alerted to loads of great albums that I have gone on to buy just by checking out the EOY lists. |

oh, trouble. a bit. here at the nicest board of the world. :-) yep, taste differs. to side with kevin: i also can't understand why frank ocean's album is so highly rated. but, kevin, fuck, the weeknd is great. his three albums were one of my highlights of 2011 :-). nevertheless, the albums of the year topic is always a fine place to put in my two cents. one of my highlights is adele and glenn's album carrington street. makes me just happy. diverting! i really love hot chip's in our heads album. listening to it with headphones makes my wife think i am silly - just beacuse i have to dance around. as always, motorpsycho. what a prog rock monster they have created. the death defying unicorn is mindblowing. my this years minimalist fave is ryan teague's field drawings. stupendous. zelienople - the world is a house on fire a fave not only because it sounds like talk talk (laughing stock era) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-sYc8v6p qo to my astonishment i liked the new dead can dance album anastasis. to be true i never heard any music of them since spleen and ideal (which i also sold in the midst of the eighties). thought they were a goth band.but it seems i was wrong and i missed a lot of (more or less) interesting (world) music. another eighties-band made a monster triple lp called the seer. the swans. a gigantic, epic work. btw: gigantic. can's the lost tapes. as it was not a reissue (or similar) i count it to the most interesting releases of this year. fabulous, great, exceptional! duane pitre - feel free hm, i can't describe this music in english. therefore: http://www.duanepitre.com/feelfree/ moon ate the dark - s.t. three reisssues i like very much: general strike - danger in paradise and two elenco classics on vinyl:edu lobo - a musica de edu lobo por edu lobo and baden powell a vontade everyone likes, i am not: grizzly bear - shields, frank ocean (as told already), the xx - coexist, alt-j - an awesome wave, tame impala - lonerism albums i liked at the beginning, because i thought they are great, but than lost interest or i began to become unsure: actress - rip, laurel halo - quarantine, flying lotus - until the quiet comes |

I want to stick up for Kevin a bit. He always says what he thinks. I've never found him to be malicious or dishonest. I don't always agree with him but I don't expect to. He doesn't have a thin skin. I get an enormous amount of music guidance from people on this board. I think it's worthwhile to know when people think something's not so hot. If it's someone whose tastes don't track along with mine I keep that in mind. I've backed off expressing some of my personal opinions on music and, honestly, I suspect that restraint deflavorizes the board somewhat. It's fun to trash music sometimes, particularly when it's been lionized everywhere else. I've got enough records that I bought when they were new that haven't stood the test of time. I've also found that fewer than one-half of the critics' darlings will appeal to me in the long run. If somebody can tip me off to the possibility that I'm getting enthused about something that's crap, great! It's fun to see if I end up agreeing in a year or three or if, instead, I hear something in it that the other person doesn't. |

At least there is a certain courtesy on this board, anyway. I'm always amazed when I make a mildly critical comment on, say, Youtube and am then swiftly showered with responses regarding my apparent oral fondness for the male member as well as a rather too intimate relationship with my mother. Sometimes it's like being back in the school playground. It's possible to state our opinions with force, truth and humour, I hope, without being insulting. Frank Ocean is fucking awful, though. |

Rob, I haven't heard Nostalgia, Ultra. Is is only available as a download? Is it a free download he put online himself, or is it a paid download? Is it his own music (and if so, why is it called a mixtape)? Stuart, I laughed out loud at your last line. And Iove the Frank Ocean album! Kevin, I don't know who or what Weeknd is. A few words in defence of Kevin (and his taste in music): I used to find his hatred of some of the music I love abrasive, but now I just smile - everyone's entitled to their opinion, even if forcefully put at times. I find much of the electronic music Kevin extols about as musical as the hum you hear when you open the fridge door. I find most of the reggae music Kevin loves to be utterly boring and repetitive. In my opinion, reggae is almost certainly the most overrated music genre ever known. (I'm not counting rap-metal as music). By the way, I suspect Kevin really does like Hall & Oates, The Beatles and "The Crowdies". |

Randy, when Rob and I me are telling you Frank Ocean is the real deal, you can take that to the bank. Kevin's ears are too cluttered with fridge hum and Stuart has been at one too many bad bunga bunga parties where the only CD they had was Frank Ocean. |

I think it's hard to imagine a BAD bunga bunga party, to be honest, Padraig. Having seen most of the invitees, I imagine that, to paraphrase what the guy said about sex, even the worst bunga bunga party has to be pretty good. The Frank Ocean crack was just a glib joke of course, not a real judgement: I've only heard a couple of things. But the kind of melismatic singing displayed, that slightly jazzy oh-man-this-is-way-tooooooo-sophisticate d-to-hit-an-actual-tune sort of thing, I do find a bit grating. Have to hear more though, really. |

It's been said that crime rates go down in towns where UB40 are playing because the petty thief class are all at the show. My own experience is that when I was selling concert tapes outside Semple Stadium in Thurles during Feile 1991, the only tape that was stolen was a UB40 one. I think you're right about the Beatles, and my daughter recently said I need I a new fridge, so you could be right there too. |

The Twlight Sad's album title should be No One Can Ever Know. |

I've been playing the Spiritualized album Sweet Heart Sweet Light quite a bit recently. Best thing they have done in a long long time, but can't really see it on many EOY lists. Laurel Halo's album Quarantine is also very good. A more reigned in Bjork? |

Cat Power and I share January 21st as our birthdays. However, I don't own any of her albums. Recommendations? |

The woozy brilliance of "The Greatest" is a late night regular with me Michael, her follow up of covers, Jukebox, Was pretty good too. The playing and arrangments on both are top notch. I bought her latest one but it hasn't grown on me yet, must give it another spin. |

Michael, what Peter said. I do think the latest record is very good though. I would add her others covers record, cunningly titled The Covers Record, to the list of recommendations. Her take on (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction is astonishing. |

Loudon Wainwright III - Older Than My Old Man Now 4. Frank Ocean - Channel Orange 5. Lee Renaldo - Between the Times and Tides 6. The Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory 7. Corin Tucker Band - Kill My Blues 8. Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball 9. Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby - A Working Museum 10. The Coup - Sorry to Bother You |
